I've been reading through documentation https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/architecture/architecture/ https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/self-hosted/Self-Hosted_Engine_Guide/ But am struggling still to understand the role ovirt-engine plays. Would anyone have recommends for additional reads? The problem I'm tackling currently looks like this: - We have (2) oVirt Data Centers, each populated by a single Cluster. The Data Centers are physically & network-wise 'distant' from one another - hosted-engine runs on (3) of the (4) Hosts in Data Center A / Cluster A. hosted-engine does not run on Data Center B / Cluster B - When we disrupt network connectivity around Cluster A (yes, that's Cluster *A*), Hosts in Cluster B crash (requiring a power cycle) and Guests in Cluster B get stopped and paused I'm struggling to understand why mussing with Cluster A affects Cluster B. From pcaps, I can see plenty of TLS traffic from Cluster A's Hosts -- presumably from ovirt-engine running on Cluster A -- exchanged with Cluster B. So, during my last maintenance window, I put hosted-engine into maintenance mode ... but Hosts/VMs in Cluster B were still affected. Where do I go to better understand what ovirt-engine does when it is 'managing' Hosts & VMs? --sk

Datacenter of several Hosts with Local Storage ? (share Logical Network)

Hello, My question is pretty simple :) Is there a way to configure Local(s) Storage Datacenter with more than 1 host ? The goal is is to share some Datacenter simple parameters between several hosts (with Local storage) like Logical Networks ? If it is not possible what is the best way / workaound to do this ? To compare, on Xenserver, it is possible to configure a "Pool" of some hosts which have Local Storage, but which share same Logical network configuration.. (I do not say XS is better^^, far from it !) Thanks for all :) Jean-Baptiste

MoM - Not working ? How to use it ?

Hello, I'm trying to test Memory balloon useful functionality, but l'm unable to make it work successfuly. Firstly, I enable the MOM on my Cluster: Memory Balloon Enable Memory Balloon Optimization Secondly, I configure a VM virtual machine like this: On system tab: Memory Size : 28672 MB Maximum memory : 28672 MB On Ressource allocation tab: Memory Allocation: Physical Memory Guaranteed : 2048 MB Memory Balloon Device: Enabled Thirdly, I test 1- I boot the VM. After boot VM consume 200MB 2- I lauch perl program which consume 26GB. 3- During this, Host RAM usage is near 90% 4- I stop the perl program, and on guest side, RAM usage drop down to 200Mo 5- On host side, RAM usage keep to 24 - 26GB. I wait some time to show if the qemu-vm process drop is host-ram-usage. Tuning and testing GlusterFS performance

So I've finally completed my first HCI build using the below configuration: 3x Dell PowerEdge R720 2x 2.9 GHz 8 Core E5-2690 256GB RAM 2x250gb SSD Raid 1 (boot/os) 2x2TB SSD jbod passthrough (used for gluster bricks) 1Gbe Nic for management 10Gbe nic for Gluster Using Replica 3 with no arbiter. Installed the latest version of oVirt available at the time 4.2.5. Created recommended volumes (with an additional data volume on second SSD). Not using VDO First thing I did was setup glusterFS network on 10Gbe and set it to be used for glusterFS and migration traffic. I've setup a single test VM using Centos7 minimal on the default "x-large instance" profile. Within this VM if I do very basic write test using something like: dd bs=1M count=256 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync I'm seeing quite slow speeds, only 8mb/sec. If I do the same from one of the hosts gluster mounts i.e. host1: /rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD/HOST:data I get about 30mb/sec (which still seems fairly low?) Am I testing incorrectly here? Is there anything I should be tuning on the Gluster volumes to increase performance with SSDs? Where can I find out where the bottle neck is here, or is this expected performance of Gluster?

Hello, when i tried to attach a snapshot disk into my backupvm. oVirt doesn't want to attach it. Dear Sir I have successfully installed the ovirt engine and ovirt node separately on two machines and I have accessed their web portals as well . But I am facing a problem in its initial configuration that I am unable to add a host and its installation fails . I am using default data center and default cluster . Unable to revive host after a reboot

Hi, I recently had to shutdown my oVirt system which contains both the engine and the host. After it came back up, the host was not able to initialize anymore from the oVirt UI. First it kept getting stuck in a loop with setting "ExecutingStarted: Jul 30, 2018, 9:06:21 AMSetting Host pc331 to Non-Operational mode." This was being repeated over and over again. It also gave this error: Host pc331 does not comply with the cluster Default networks, the following networks are missing on host: 'ovirtmgmt' Even though I am using that interface (ovirtmgmt) to access the system and 'ip addr show' shows that it's set up properly. I tried some more things, including upgrading the host, When I do that, the status changes to 'Installing' and later to 'Install Failed'. Switch from nightly to stable

Dear users, Around ovirt 4.2.2 after a bug I had switch to nightly from stable. Its was do applied only on the engine, not compute nodes. But now I would like to switch back to stable branch. Possible to use Console via Mac web browser?

I recall in the past (on a bit older of an oVirt build) I was able to launch VM consoles from my web browser. I believe it may have been using spice html5 at the time, is this still possible? Currently launching console downloads the typical .vv file. What is currently the best/easiest method to access VM consoles using MacOS?

uploading ISOs

Hi, Before I go to the work of making my iso's available to the ovirt-engine so I can use the iso uploader cli. I haven't worked with ovirt for a while and the documents still refer to an ISO domain and engine-iso-uploader the former which I understand is not required now, just wondered if there was any easier way to upload through the web UI maybe? I noticed an upload button under images. could that be used for ISOs? I remember that was something that put me off slightly working with Ovirt last time was the number of steps I had to take to get an ISO available to build a VM from, but if that's still the way I will soldier on. Trouble connecting to IDRAC7

I just enabled power management/fencing successfully on two of my hosts (Dell poweredge R720s with Idrac 7) but am failing to add the third. I enter the IP and user/pass like the others, it takes 15 seconds or so they spits out "Test Failed: Internal JSON-RPC error" I tried resetting the IDRAC on that server. I can also ping it and access it fine in a web browser. I can ping it from the host as well. Is there any configuration in IDRAC that could be blocking the fence attempt or any logs in oVirt I can look at to figure out what might be happening with the connection? I see there is a "fence_idrac" command on the hosts but unsure what switches to use with it to test. Thanks!

Hi All, In the restapi of version 3, there is bootable attribute in disk. But in version 4, the bootable attribute is removed from disk. For vm i can get bootable attribute from diskattachment. Data Recovery from snapshot

Hi: With yet another gluster disk failure / gluster collapse, it appears I lost the "main" backing image for one of my vm servers. I have snapshots still in tact (or at least, appear to be), but the main image is gone. The main server process stores a backup at regular intervals in its disk, and that would have been changed data, so it would be in the snapshot rather than the base image. Is there any way to recover this one .tar.gz file from the snapshot with the missing main image? This is a backup of dynamic data, and without it, I will have lost several customers data, some of which cannot be recreated/regenerated. it also appears that my backup (gluster geo-replication) did not work (had crashed a while ago, and has a very old backup of this image). --Jim

[No question] NFS disabled, hosts wandering tearful

Hello, This is a simple testimony about what happened yesterday in one of our DC. This DC runs on a dedicated bare-metal engine, oversized compared to the need, thus I've added a NFS service on it to host a small storage domain and the ISO storage domain. Yesterday, after having received the colorful announce about the 4.2.5 version, I decided to upgrade. As our engine was still on a CentOS 7.4, I first upgraded its OS version to 7.5, then reboot. Smooth. Then I followed the very usual oVirt engine upgrade path. Smooth. Eventually, I upgraded the hosts with ovirt-ansible-cluster-upgrade as usual. The result was frightening because the hosts were put in maintenance, upgraded, back to life, seen unavailable, unreachable, connecting, alive, rebooted, then back to another turn and looping... During this, the SPM role was obviously jumping around, and that did not help the debug. In the end, it appeared that something during an upgrade stopped and disabled the NFS service. My hosts partially relied on it, so after having restarted the NFS service, all came back to life. The NFS disabling may come from the CentOS upgrade, except if someone tells me it could come from something on the oVirt side? I'm sure the RH people will advice me not to run NFS on the engine, but apart this event, I had no trouble doing this in years. Regards, -- Nicolas ECARNOT

Migrating Legacy Hyperconverged Legacy switch type to OVS

Spent the better part of a day trying to figure out how to bridge OVN networks with physical networks, only to later find out that "Attach to physical network" has zero effect in a Legacy cluster... which started me down the rabbit hole of "how do I switch the Default cluster to be OVS" Then, I come up with the bright idea that I'm going to create a new OVS cluster and migrate all the hosts there, well in order to do that you might: 1. Put the Host into maintenance 2. Install to UNDEPLOY the hosted engine 3. Remove the host from the cluster 4. Add the host to the new OVS cluster However this has a nasty bug where the required networks won't ever sync I believe because of some QoS settings (even though I haven't set that), so host is not able to reach gluster storage, and this was not one of the 3 replicas, it was just a client So moving on just to test the waters with another angle, I UNDEPLOY on one of the gluster servers, and then and only then after waiting however long it took to install/undeploy, does it tell me that It can't remove this host from the cluster because it holds gluster volumes......... How in the heck can I migrate what I have on Default to use native OVS? Let's say I started fresh (I'm using oVirt Node 4.2.5) since I have that option....I don't ever recall there being an option to select OVS as the hosted-engine switch type, and it of course sets up the Default cluster for you - which is the one I'm having issues with because it's legacy by default. I work at a company with a massive AD infrastructure. Is there any way to specify a specific OU to search through instead of just providing a top level DN? We use sssd for all our authing needs on our linux machines and would like to do something like below: ldap_user_search_base = OU=Employees,OU=blah users,DC=blah,DC=com enumerate = false When I connect on cli it looks like Ovirt is reaching out and grabbing a ton of info it doesn't really need. It takes on average 40 second to allow me to log in on CLI or UI. This is not an AD issue as we use AD on everything in our labs and have no issues with speed. I applied these changes and it didn't speed anything up. https://ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/infra/aaa_faq/ I can see from a tcpdump that I am in fact hitting my local AD servers and not going across the world to get an answer. Direct LUNs and VM Pauses

Hello All, We recently stood up a new Ovirt install backed by an ISCSI SAN and it has been working great, but there are a few quirks I am trying to iron out. We have run into an issue where when we fail-over our SAN (for maintenance, or otherwise) any VM with a Direct LUN gets paused and doesn’t resume. VMs without a direct LUN never paused. Digging through posts on this list and reading some bug reports, it seems like this a known quirk with how Ovirt handles Direct LUNs (it doesn't monitor the LUNs and so it wont resume the VM). To get the VMs to automatically restart I have attached VM leases to them and that seems to work fine, not as nice as a pause and resume, but it minimizes downtime. What I’m trying to understand is why the VMs with Direct LUNs paused, and ones without didn’t. My only speculation is that since the Non-Direct is using LVM on top of ISCSI, that LVM is adding its own layer of timeouts that cause it to mask the outage? My other question is, how can I keep my VMs with Direct LUNs from pausing during short outages? Can I put configurations in my multipath.conf for just the wwids of my Direct LUNs to increase the ‘no_path_retry’ to prevent the VMs from pausing in the first place? I know in general you don’t want to increase the ‘no_path_retry’ because it can cause timeout issues with VDSM and SPM operations (LVM changes, etc). But in the case of a Direct LUN would it cause any problems? Thank you, Ryan

Hosted Engine deploy failed on new HCI build

Latest version of oVirt node 4.2 installed on three hosts. I completed successfully the cockpit gdeploy process to deploy HCI. All of that went well with no errors. I then proceeded to the hosted engine deployment step which eventually failed (log attached). Hello, I try to mount an NFS Data share from a EMC VNXe3200 export. Unfortunately, NFS share cannot be mount, there is permission error. (Indeed, after the same issue on another NFS ISO repo, I’ve change exported directory user/group to 36:36, and O-Virt NFS mount was great). So, I think issue with my VNXe3200 is regarding UID / GID owner on VNXe3200 side. After webex with EMC support, change owner / permission on VNXe side seems not possible / supported. Upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 failing - SQL Issues

Hi All, I'm still struggling to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 and the root cause seems to be the SQL upgrade. I installed my 4.1.9 with the engine appliance image and restored a DB to it. Hi, I setup my 3 host HCI cluster and things are going pretty good. I have a few issues though... one of them is that I added two more hosts to the three node cluster to make it a 5 nodes. This seemed to work fine until I went to create bricks. I have 6 x 2 TB disks for use as JBOD in each node. After I added the nodes, I went to the host and storage devices. This looks significantly different that the view on my first 3 hosts. On the two new hosts all my drives sdb - sdg have locks next to them and file system type is multipath__member. Further up the page then I see a UID under the name and description is PERC H710P dm-multipath - no lock next to it. I created a brick on this and it created the lvmpv file system, however when I go to bricks view, there are no bricks. So, did I make a mistake while adding the hosts? is there some way to prevent this dm-multipath configuration? Thanks Bill

Hi, I have my ovirt 4.2 hci cluster up and running, but I have a probably stupid question. During the setup and in the documents it defaults to setting up the engine datastore/volume, a VMstore/volume and a data/volume. What is the Data volume for? I am planning on running VMs on this so I would assume I need VMstore and that's what I will grow on my system. In previous installs you had the opportunity to create the ISO domain, but not now. I can see how to create in the engine UI so that's fine, but I am just wondering what people use the Data volume for as an example. Thanks Bill

Hello. I'm trying to implement following backup scenario for my VMs: storage domain is a volume on netapp appliance connected to oVirt cluster via NFS3. Netapp produces its zero copy snapshots of this volume. I want to be able to restore VMs from these snapshots, e.g. Netapp can export snapshot to ovirt as another NFS volume after that I want to be able to import VM or attach VM disks from snapshot volume to VM and start it. As far as I understand it is basic backup|migration scenario when user wants to move VMs from one ovirt DC to another ovirt DC. Right now I cannot import snapshot volume which contains exactly same domain metadata (in dom_dm/ directory) as original volume (which I cannot detach since it hosts disks for running VMs). I tried to rename dom_md/, but with no success in domain import process. Maybe someone in this list uses same scenario for VM backup and can give some advice.

I've got one physical host in a 3 host CentOS7.5 cluster that reports the following error several times a day VDSM node3.example.com command Get Host Statistics failed: Internal JSON-RPC error: {'reason': '<Fault 1: "<type \'exceptions.AttributeError\'>:\'NoneType\' object has no attribute \'statistics\'">'} Any ideas what the problem might be?

I have three nodes setup with two drives each in jbod. On the brick config screen you have to specify the device location and size of each of the volumes you configure on the previous step i.e engine and data. It seems that I can only specify one of my drives for the data volume. So I'd have to pick /dev/SDA drive for engine and /dev/sdb for data, but I have 2x2tb drives what do I do with all the other space on the devocd I put the engine volume on? If I choose to use sdb for data and have it 1.8tb does that mean the data storage will only use one single drive in each of my three nodes? I want to make use of all six drives to increase I/o performance. I don't understand how the jbod config of gluster is suppose to work. What if I had even more drives in each node say 4 separate drives how would I make use of all drives when I can only specify one device for each volume? I'm thinking about creating a data and data2 volume and specifying SDA for data and sdb for data2. Am I completely misunderstanding the setup here. Its very confusion and there is next to no documentation on HCI available. Hosted engine unaviable after storage rebuild

Hello all, My hosted engine does not start up anymore, because the node can't reach the storage. The hosted engine configuration has not been retrieved from shared storage. Please ensure that ovirt-ha-agent is running and the storage server is reachable. What happend is that my NAS crashed and I had to rebuild it from the backup. I'm quit sure that I called all the NFS shares the same way as they bevore the issue. How can I figure out whats the issue with the storage? The logs wheren't realy helpful for me (but may it's me and not the logs to blame) Regards and thanks Sebi
