In the releases notes, even for the 4.6 rc, I see: https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.1.6/ ... OpsTools currently includes collectd 5.7.0, and the write_http plugin is packaged separately. But if I check the current state: yum list collectd-write_http collectd ... collectd.x86_64 5.7.2-1.el7 @centos-opstools-release collectd-write_http.x86_64 5.7.2-1.el7 @centos-opstools-release So I think the warning is not needed any more. One can uses both ovirt and epel without any special check.

mode 4 bonding for VMs with NetworkManager anyone?

Hello, I'm testing ovirt node, both 4.1.5 and 4.1.6rc2. I see that in both versions the network stack is configured with NetworkManager enabled. With plain CentOS I always disabled NetworkManager and only used classical network service alone, so I have not background with NM, related to hypervisor. I have configured a vlan (untagged) for VMs, using bonding mode=4 (802.3ad). I have some problems with my VMs: they are reachable from some parts and not from others. In parallel I have already asked network guys to crosscheck network configurations of the datacenter, but I would like to have confirmation that other ones are already using with success the combination of: - NetworkManager on hypervisor - bonding mode = 4 for VMs traffic Another question for another aspect I never understood: with an environment in the past (before 3.5 times if I remember well) I used 802.3ad but I had to set lacp_rate=1 (fast) because I had connection problems with the default lacp_rate=0 (slow) parameter. I see that still the default is lacp_rate=0 Could it be the same this time? Is there any reason to set default lacp_rate=0 in oVirt (or the reverse... ;-)? Thanks in advance, Gianluca

Hi Folks, I'm giving a demo of our new 3 node oVirt deployment next week and am looking for some high points that I can give to the Managers that will be a sell point. If you could help with the below questions I would really appreciate it: Who are the big users of oVirt?? Why oVirt and not vMware?? (we are a big vMware house so free doesn't cover it) What is the future for oVirt?? Why do you use oVirt?? Any links or ideas appreciated, BR/David

hyperconverged question

Hello - I have successfully created a hyperconverged hosted engine setup consisting of 3 nodes - 2 for VM's and the third purely for storage. I manually configured it all, did not use ovirt node or anything. Built the gluster volumes myself However, I noticed that when setting up the hosted engine and even when adding a new storage domain with glusterfs type, it still asks for hostname:/volumename This leads me to believe that if that one node goes down (ex: node1:/data), then ovirt engine wont be able to communicate with that volume because its trying to reach it on node 1 and thus, go down I know glusterfs fuse client can connect to all nodes to provide failover/ha but how does the engine handle this?

Hi, I study the snapshot possibillities in ovirt. I would like to make a cron running every day which: - retrieve vm list from a specific cluster - create a new snapshot (without memory) for every vm - removes oldest snapshot to keep only 5. I'm wondering what is the best approach to do that? use a list of command in batch for "ovirt-shell", scripting a bit with python, using the api ovirt? More than one mgmt network possible?

Hello, in site1 I have 2 oVirt hosts with ovirtmgmt configured on vlan167. Now I want to add a server that is in site2 where this vlan doesn't arrive. I have here a vlan 169 that does routing with the vlan 167 of site1. Can I add the host into the same cluster or the only way is to "transport" vlan167 into site2 too? Thanks, Gianluca

Adding host for the first time - Power Management?

Hello, We have an existing 4 Host Ovirt 3.5 installation. I am adding two more HP Gen9 Blades to the configuration. I looked at how the power management is setup up in Ovirt for the first four blades and it appears to be configured for ilo4 using a user account that I cannot find documentation for anywhere within my infrastructure. Questions: - is this user / password defined on the blade somewhere (perhaps like an IPMI setup)? - is anyone familiar with where I set this up on an HP Blade? I'd like to get this configured before it goes into production as I assume this requires access to the blade bios / setup to properly configure. In this case, it was selinux On node 1 it is set to disabled but on node 2 it is set to permissive. I am not sure how they got different but I wanted to update this list with this finding Node 2 was setup directly via web UI in the engine with host -> new. Perhaps I manually set node 1 to disabled Does ovirt / libvirt expect permissive? Or does it expect enforcing? Or does it need to be both the same matching? thanks!

Discard After Delete: Why not the default?

Hello, In the settings for a storage domain, in "Advanced Options", there is an option "Discard After Delete". The default is that the checkbox is not set. The documentation at https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/storage/discard- after-delete/ and https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/storage/pass- discard-from-guest-to-underlying-storage/ does not mention why the option is not the default. I'm writing a script to install a new SSL key/cert pair (from Let's Encrypt) for the engine web UI on oVirt 4.1. I'm looking at this, but it's a little confusing. https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/appe-oVirt_and_SSL/ It sounds like steps 1 and 3 are referring to the CA-supplied intermediate cert(s), not the actual issue cert for the server. Is that right? Does anything actually use the PCKS12 format file referred to in step 4? I don't normally see that format from regular CAs; they usually provide cert+intermediate(s) in PEM format. With Apache 2.4, it is normal to just put the cert+intermediate(s) chain in one file and configure Apache with SSLCertificateFile. You aren't supposed to put the CA-supplied cert in the SSLCACertificateFile like oVirt appears to do; that's intended to be used for validating client certs, not the intermediate(s) for the server cert. It really just looks like the cert+intermediate(s) should go in /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/apache.cer, the corresponding key put in /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/apache.key.nopass, and then Apache needs to be restarted. Since oVirt doesn't use the engine web UI cert for anything internally (right?), do any of the other steps on the above page matter? -- Chris Adams <cma(a)cmadams.net>

Hi All, I've playing with ovirt self hosted engine setup and I even use it to production for several VM. The setup I have is 3 server with gluster storage in replica 2+1 (1 arbiter). The data storage domain where VMs are stored is mounted with gluster through ovirt. The performance I get for the VMs is very low and I was thinking to switch and mount the same storage through NFS instead of glusterfs. The only think I am hesitant is how can I ensure high availability of the storage when I loose one server? I was thinking to have at /etc/hosts sth like below: 10.100.100.1 nfsmount 10.100.100.2 nfsmount 10.100.100.3 nfsmount then use nfsmount as the server name when adding this domain through ovirt GUI. Are there any other more elegant solutions? What do you do for such cases? Note: gluster has the back-vol-file option which provides a lean way to have redundancy on the mount point and I am using this when mounting with glusterfs. Thanx

cpu, core and thread mappings

Hello, I was talking with a guy expert in VMware and discussing performance of VMs in respect of virtual cpus assigned to them in relation with mapping with the real hw of the hypervisor underneath. One of the topics was numa usage and its overheads in case of a "too" big VM, in terms of both number of vcpus and memory amount. Eg: suppose host has 2 intel based sockets, with 6 cores and HT enabled and has 96Gb of ram (distributed 48+48 between the 2 processors) suppose I configure a VM with 16 vcpus (2:4:2): would be the mapping respected at physical level or only a sort of "hint" for the hypervisor? Can I say that it would perform better if I configure it 12 vcpus and mapping 1:6:2, because it can stay all inside one cpu? And what if I define a VM with 52Gb of ram? Can I say that it would perform in general better if I try to get it all in one cpu related memory slots (eg not more than 48Gb in my example)? Are there any documents going more deeply in these sort of considerations? Also, if one goes and sizes so that the biggest VM is able to all-stay inside one cpu-memory, does it make sense to say that it will perform better in this scenario a cluster composed by 4 nodes, each one with 1 socket and 48Gb of memory instead of a cluster of 2 nodes, each one with 2 sockets and 96Gb of ram? Slow booting host - restart loop

Hi everyone, I installed 2 hosts on a new cluster and the servers take a really long to boot up (about 8 minutes). When a host crashes or is powered off the ovirt-manager starts it via power management, since the servers takes all that time to boot up the ovirt-manager thinks it failed to start and proceeds to reboot it, several times before giving up, when the server is finally started (about 20 minutes after the failure) I changed some engine variables with engine-config trying to set a higher timeout, but the problem persists. VMs going in to non-responding state

Hi All, I have created a converged setup with cluster having both virt and gluster capability. There are three hosts in this cluster, and this cluster also has enabled 'native access to gluster domain' which enables VM to use libgfapi access mechanism. With this setup, I see VMs created landing up in non-reponding state after sometime. I have raised bug[1] for this issue. Hi, with upcoming CentOS 1708 all the SIGs have been asked to do some cleanup of old / unsupported stuff. As part of the cleanup, ovirt 3.5, 3.6 and 4.0 will be dropped from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/virt/x86_64/ Also, as part of the cleanup a few packages previously tagged in CentOS VIrt SIG repos and now available in CentOS base / optional / extras repo have been untagged and won't be in http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/virt/x86_64/ when the repo will be re-generated from tags. As a side effect, you may see cockpit related packages not available if you're running oVirt on RHEL 7.4 instead of CentOS 7.1708 because on CentOS 7 extras channel is enabled by default while on RHEL you need to enable it manually. Before it happens, if you're already using it can you please provide feedback on its goodness on oVirt environment? I don't see critical changes from 0.12.37 but some feedback would help. Hi everyone, Here's my use case of using Ovirt I want to store only virtual machine of "Hosted engine" to Shared Disk, in addition i also want to store other virtual machine to "Local disk" For "Hosted engine", i want to built it with High Availability. There's no need for High Availability for other virtual machine. Because i want to use HDD's capacity of Host server, so i'm considering the above-mention structure/design. Storage slowly expanding

Hi all: I have several VMs, all thin provisioned, on my small storage (self-hosted gluster / hyperconverged cluster). I'm now noticing that some of my VMs (espicially my only Windows VM) are using even MORE disk space than the blank it was allocated. Example: windows VM: virtual size created at creation: 30GB (thin provisioned). Actual disk space in use: 19GB. According to the storage -> Disks tab, its currently using 39GB. How do I get that down? I have two other VMs that are somewhat heavy DB load (Zabbix and Unifi); both of those are also larger than their created max size despite disk in machine not being fully utilized. None of these have snapshots. How do I fix this? Thanks! --Jim

Failed to import the Hosted Engine Storage Domain

Hi all, A while ago I had some problem with hosted-engine network which wasn't set correctly at deploy time, so I finally decided to redeploy the hosted engine in the hope the network will be set correctly this time. I've followed this procedure: 1. Stop all VMs 2. Full backup of HE DB and export to safe place 3. Cleanup HE storage following https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2121581 4. Reboot Hosts 5. Re-deploy HE until DB recovery 6. Recover DB adding the following param: --he-remove-storage-vm Removes the hosted-engine storage domain, all its entities and the hosted-engine VM during restore. --he-remove-hosts Removes all the hosted-engine hosts during restore. 7. Finalize HE deployment. Everything did run without errors and I'm able to access Web UI. But now I don't see my HE VM and its respective Storage Domain, the logs says it isn't able to import it. hi, i'm sorry to write to this list again, but i failed to upgrade a freshly installed oVirt Node from version 4.1.3 to 4.1.5. it seems to be a SELinux related problem. i'm attaching imgbased.log + relevant lines from engine.log. is the skipped version (4.1.4) the problem? can i force upgrade to version 4.1.4? thx matthias

Cannot delete the snapshot

Dear all, This is my first time to ask question in this place. Thank you for time to read my question first. Yesterday, i wanted to delete the snapshot on oVirt Engine Web Administration. However, it took so long to delete a snapshot and it still in process. Due to the "snapshot error", i cannot run the virtual machine as i shut it down before. Hi There, Our 3 node Data center is up and running and I am populating it with the required vm's. It's a test lab so I want to provide pre fabricated environments for different users. I have already set up a CentOS box for nested virtualisation which works quite well but I would really like to group multiple machines together in to one template so that when a user deploys or chooses the template they get all the vm's together as one. Is there a way to do this in oVirt without nested virtualisation? I particularly want to provide a ceph set up with 3 nodes 1 mgmt server and a couple of clients, which I had planned to do through nested virt but believe that multiple vm's would be cleaner. Any suggestions as to how to achieve this? Any help or hints would be appreciated, BR/David

Still messages about metrics related packages update after 4.1.5

It seems I'm still having problems with metrics related packages after upgrade to 4.1.5. Similar to this one at 4.1 time: http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2017-February/079670.html A cluster with hosts at 4.1.1 has been updated to 4.1.5 Hosts are CentOS 7.3 yum update method on host was executed to make the update, after putting it into maintenance And reboot done. Now after 2 days engine still complains about updates for both hosts: Check for available updates on host ov300 was completed successfully with message 'found updates for packages rubygem-fluent-plugin-collectd-nest-0.1.4-1.el7, rubygem-fluent-plugin-viaq_data_model-0.0.5-1.el7'. Check for available updates on host ov301 was completed successfully with message 'found updates for packages rubygem-fluent-plugin-collectd-nest-0.1.4-1.el7, rubygem-fluent-plugin-viaq_data_model-0.0.5-1.el7'. Actually the packages are not installed at all on host. Probably released between 4. and 4.1.5. On both hosts I have executed yum install rubygem-fluent-plugin-collectd-nest-0.1.4-1.el7 rubygem-fluent-plugin-viaq_data_model-0.0.5-1.el7 but in my opinion it should be corrected so that in case of new packages between minor versions, they are automatically installed during update in some way eg make the new packages a dependency of the new ovirt-release rpm so that during update Aug 29 12:13:17 Updated: ovirt-release41-4.1.5-1.el7.centos.noarch they are automatically pulled in. Hi, you can remote the hosted engine storage domain from the engine as well. It should also be re-imported. We had cases where destroying the domain ended up with a locked SD, but removing the SD and re-importing is the proper way here.
