Hi, I’m working on upgrading an oVirt 4.3 cluster to the latest 4.5 version. So far, I’ve successfully performed a test upgrade of the oVirt Engine from 4.3 (CentOS 7) to 4.4 (AlmaLinux 8.10). I’ve encountered some noVNC issues, as described here: https://forums.oracle.com/ords/apexds/post/olvm-manager-vm-console-novnc-ex… I’ll probably leave this issue unresolved for now, as I’m planning to continue with the upgrade process. For the next step, I’d like to ask if anyone has experience installing and running an oVirt 4.5 cluster (both engine and hosts) on AlmaLinux 8.x. So far, it seems that I might need to upgrade the OS to AlmaLinux 9 as well, possibly using ELevate. If anyone has recently completed a similar migration, I’d really appreciate any tips or recommendations. Best regards, Pavel

Hi, I am trying to fetch vms,hosts and other component information for reference purpose. However seems like RV tool does not support ovirt. So checking if we have any other way to fetch those information in one api call. Tried builtin grafana but it does not give host information where vm resides.

Hi all, I have been looking into oVirt and researching possible utilization by my team. I have been through the instructions in the site, on github and the forums. I have attempted both with self hosted using the ISO provided and as a standalone engine installation on a separate server. However I have been getting all kinds of different failures and errors and since I understand that some of the instructions provided could be slightly outdated can you please direct me to the most accurate and recent instructions to follow for setting up and testing the environment? Also is there a new version planned some time soon or should I consider the 4.5.5 version from almost 2 years ago the most recent and updated one? Hi oVirt Community, Anyone in the community was able to use oVirt platform for nvidia SXM environment either on sxm4 or sxm5? We can achieve with KVM with direct libvirt as GPU pass-thourgh but not sure how the functionality works in sxm and VDSM. -De

How to modify the MAC address of a bonding interface after changing the nic card

Hi, ovirt 4.4 on centos 8. We have changed the network card of a hypervisor which uses bonding interface. The bonding interface still uses the old MAC address of the former slave interface. We tried to modify it via CLI but it didn't work, as soon as the node (hypervisor) is activated, the old MAC is reestablished. it seems to be backed up somewhere. Should we reinstall the host? Regards.

graphical console strange issue - certificate's owner does not match hostname - IP address (ovirt 4.5.6)

Dear proud RHV/Ovirt Hackers, facing strange issue with graphical console - do you have any tips? We successfully run many different clusters, most of them are similar (versions, hw setup). On single one of those, we are facing issue with opening graphical console: Many other clusters are the same setup, the same number of hypervisors, the same versions of OS, packages, ovirt-engine OS, versions and packages... ...and graphical console opens fine. The graphical console setup is the same at all places also: We did comparison of 'console-1.vv' content over many clusters and its content is totaly the same with the faulty one. Meaning there is never hostname, there is always an IP address (not hostname) as the "The certificate's owner does not match hostname 'IP-address'" says: Any tips howto fix this? One of my hosts is faulty and needs to be replaced with a good one. The new host uses the same host name as the old host and the same backend storage name. The recovery process is as follows: 1. Delete the storage volume of the faulty host and the storage volume of the arbitration node. 2. Use the glusterfs ansble script to restore the faulty host. (Create partitions and join peer nodes) 3. Add the storage volume of the new host 4. Wait for data recovery During the data recovery process, it is always stuck at Items to be repaired entries How should I deal with these items

network out of sync

Hi, After reinstalling ovirt hosts with alma Linux 9, all my hosts are out of sync on the management bridge. I tried to sync them, but it has no effects. Then I tried "static" and "DHCP" but it has no effect as well. I precise that I was using ovirt node 4.5.5 el9, and the bug wasn't present. It seems to be a bug because, network is okay and there is no other issue using alamlinux 9.5 with latest vdsmd. Problem with deleting snapshot - no responging VM

Hello, I have ovirt-engine version 4.5.6-1.el9, and nodes version 4.5.5. We have about 200 VMs in the environment. So far, backups were performed using snapshot + ovirt API + AWX. The problem started when during backup some machines became unresponsive (it was impossible to get to the console and it happened randomly), Prellocated disks became ThinkProvisioning and it was not possible to delete the snapshot. We decided to skip all scripts and click the snapshot directly in ovirt-engine and then delete it in order to merge. In many cases, these tasks ended successfully, and in random situations the process hung again and the machine became unresponsive. I thought..... maybe it was a performance problem (network to the array, the array itself, etc.). So we set up the dev environment on different hardware (different physical servers and different hardware with ISCSI). I copied one of the sample machines that had problems. I made a snapshot again and merged it using deleting from the ovirt-engine interface. It worked a few times and I decided to do another test I made a snapshot of the test VM and logged into it and used a file about 16GB in size and additionally copied it to another place on the disk and then tried to merge the snapshot and again the VM became unresponsive and it was impossible to delete the snapshot. Unable to set up host bond networks

Hi We are trying to create a cluster using OLVM 4.5 (with an up to date OEL8 kernel) with a bond of 2 virtual interfaces (mode 2 XOR) that we have set up with NetworkManager prior to adding the KVM host to oVirt. Hosts are added successfully and we can see the two physical NICs (eth0/eth1) in the Setup Host Networks dialog, however the bond0 device is hidden as are the virtual slave interfaces (so we cannot create the bond in oVirt either). It appears the bond0 is sent to oVirt by VDSM as we see it is continually sent in the vdsm log file from the host as well as listed in the capabilities using vdsm-client. We didn't find obvious errors in ovirt-engine.log or in host-deploy or in the vdsm logs on the KVM hosts. We assume there is some validation or filtering oVirt uses that is hiding the bond / slave interfaces and that maybe our slave interfaces are missing some property oVirt wants but we cannot find it in the code in order to work around this - any pointers appreciated. Hi, I am trying to get console of hosted engine via KVM host where this SHE is. I am getting below but unable to see login prompt. I have set the password for console as per oracle doc. usecase: SHE UI is down so wanted to know whats going on SHE level by login into it. # echo $TERM xterm-256color # hosted-engine --console The engine VM is running on this host Escape character is ^] Not getting any prompt after this. Anyone come across such scenario.

I've tried multiple times, with different distributions like CentOS Stream 9, AlmaLinux 9.5, and Rocky Linux 9, but I keep hitting the same wall. Essentially, during the engine configuration, I get an error saying that https://mirroros.centos.org is unreachable. I've tried all the repository workarounds I've seen online, changing the pointers and everything, but nothing seems to help. The weird thing is, if I install the engine on a dedicated server, it works fine. It's only when I try to deploy a self-hosted engine that I get this mirror error. Then, just to see what would happen, I gave Oracle Linux a shot. And guess what? The self-hosted engine configured perfectly, without even trying to touch those CentOS repositories. So, that's definitely pointing to some kind of distribution-specific issue. On top of that, I've also run into another problem with the 4.5 distribution related to VLANs. I'm working in a data center with a bunch of VLAN-certified networks. I wanted to set up oVirt 4.5, using a self-hosted engine, and assign one of those VLAN networks to ovirtmgmt. But the installation just flat-out fails because it only seems to accept physical network devices. The only way I could get it to work was to put a switch in place to mask the VLAN, which is a bit of a clunky workaround. My older 4.4-based virtualizer didn't have any of these problems, so I'm wondering if something's changed significantly in 4.5. Any ideas? Hi. Sorry for the delay in response.. still have the issue Its is not cert related as I can use image io for one cluster/dc (the first one) and that wouldn't work if cert was the issue.. i.e we have cluster1: app1+app2 - app1 sd (this works) cluster2: db1+db2 - db1 sd cluster3: dmz1+dmz2 - dmz1 sd , and so on (we have 8 clusters each in own dc) each cluster has access to their own section of san (storage domain) the issue is that if I go to storage - domains - and enter any storage domain and 'upload' the hosts showing in ALL clusters/storage domains in the drop down in the upload page shows the same hosts 'app1 and app2..' So I can upload to the storage domain app1+app2 uses (only) and only if I use the hosts app1 and app2 (cluster1) - but all storage domains only show app1 and app2 as hosts (in the upload section) - in the storage domains used by db1 +db2 they should show those hosts (but I only see in drop down app1 + app2).. Really odd.. - test connection always works (because I do have access to app1/app2 ) - but app1+app2 only have access to their sd .. Hey there, I've been running into a really frustrating issue while trying to set up a self-hosted engine. I've tried multiple times, with different distributions like CentOS Stream 9, AlmaLinux 9.5, and Rocky Linux 9, but I keep hitting the same wall. Essentially, during the engine configuration, I get an error saying that https://mirroros.centos.org is unreachable. I've tried all the repository workarounds I've seen online, changing the pointers and everything, but nothing seems to help. The weird thing is, if I install the engine on a dedicated server, it works fine. It's only when I try to deploy a self-hosted engine that I get this mirror error. Then, just to see what would happen, I gave Oracle Linux a shot. And guess what? The self-hosted engine configured perfectly, without even trying to touch those CentOS repositories. So, that's definitely pointing to some kind of distribution-specific issue. On top of that, I've also run into another problem with the 4.5 distribution related to VLANs. I'm working in a data center with a bunch of VLAN-certified networks. I wanted to set up oVirt 4.5, using a self-hosted engine, and assign one of those VLAN networks to ovirtmgmt. But the installation just flat-out fails because it only seems to accept physical network devices. The only way I could get it to work was to put a switch in place to mask the VLAN, which is a bit of a clunky workaround. My older 4.4-based virtualizer didn't have any of these problems, so I'm wondering if something's changed significantly in 4.5. Any ideas? Hey, I had the same issue with Oracle Linux Virtualization. There is a known bug which prevents using bonds. If you’re on Oracle Linux, you can use kernel version kernel-uek-0:5.15.0-103.114.4.el8uek, which is known to work. (Anything above that has not worked, below that works fine too). Hi all, As we want to bring some more action in the community and some collaboration, we would like to setup some new place to communicate for oVirt. The current IRC channel is quite dead, and I think IRC is not what we want to use anymore. Therefor the idea was to setup a Matrix Server/Channels or a Mattermost instance. I think both have their advantages and disadvantages, but might be nice to hear some feedback from the community. What would you prefer as a place to communicate with each other? - Matrix channel on matrix.org - Matrix server with multiple channels - Mattermost instance Or perhaps some other idea's? :) Please let me know so this can be setup! In case you're wondering how I built it, there's no real magic. I checked out the repository (https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-node-ng-image) on my alma system. It will likely be a similar result on other Linux systems, but I didn't test any other combinations. I use docker-ce on alma9. Note: The underlying system needs to be a working kvm environment as the build script performs qemu based builds. docker run -v /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel:/kernel -v $PWD:/workspace --device=/dev/kvm --device=/dev/kvm/tun --ulimit=nofile=262144:262144 --privileged -it quay.io/ovirt/buildcontainer:almalinux9 /bin/bash cd /workspace ./build.sh The .github/workflows/build.yml looks *mostly* correct, just some tweaks and it should be able to create build isos - assuming the upload actions etc still work. Personally I do my builds via vscode devcontainers, but that's fundamentally the above docker command. I hope this helps. Hello ovirt Community we are running some ovirt clusters in 4.5.x each with FC backend. Since switching from CentOS 8 to Rockly Linux 9 as ovirt-host, the VMs with a shared LUN and SCSI-PR can no longer be started with the error sgio=unfiltered. This means that the Windows SQL failover clusters, file server failover clusters and so on no longer work. As is known, support for SGIO=filtered has been removed in RHEL 9 and its derivatives. But how can shared discs be passed through to the VMs again so that SCSI-PR works? Is there an alternative? Thanks for your feedback

Networking help needed for a newbee

Hi experts, I have successfully set up my KVM and hosted engine on virtmgmt network ( the KVM has the ip address of 172.18.100.15 and the hosted engine 172.18.100.30) , I have been able to import existing VMs (10.1.10.XXX) using virt-v2v successfully and start them, I can even access the imported VMs using the console. However, When I try to ping or ssh these VMs from the KVM (or anywhere else for that matter) I get host unreachable . the interesting thing is I can still access the non-migrated VMs on the same subnet from the KVM! Examp: the non-migrated VM on 10.1.10.191 is reachable , but the migrated VM on OVIRT at 10.1.10.192 is unreachable from the KVM! My guess is I need to tell virtmgmt to allow traffic between different IP ranges but I am not sure how and where! Any pointers or help is much appreciated. Thanks Masi

How to remove HE vm?

Hi, few months ago I migrated our oVirt setup from self hosted engine to standalone. After that I undeploy HE from hosts. All is working fine but * HE vm is still in list of all vms (sure, shutdown) and cannot be removed through UI * also I would like to remove HE domain * when doing engine-setup I have to use workaround as oVirt is not in global maintenance (and don't need to be as it is standalone deployment now) engine-setup --offline --otopi-environment=OVESETUP_CONFIG/continueSetupOnHEVM=bool:True yes, that are just glitches but I would like to clean it up... VM hangs when expanding direct LUN

Hi, We have multible oVirt clusters (based on CentOS 9 Stream) with several nodes (based on the 4.5 el9 node image) in each and a great number of virtual machines (mainly RHEL 8). The problem we encounter is random, it happens sometimes and other times not. Backend storage consists of SAN attached IBM Storwize V7000. Problem is when we expand a LUN on the storage system and wishes to expand it in oVirt for use in the VM, sometimes this process hangs the VM completely, it shows as running in oVirt GUI, it cannot be paused/shutdown from the GUI - only way to shut it down is to login to the node running the VM and from virsh run a destroy command. Anyone else encountered this problem? /John

I've searched official Oracle documentation, the oVirt administration guide, reddit, LLMs, and about every other source I could find but haven't seen anything that allows me set up a bond successfully. For background, I'm currently using one server as management and another server as a local storage host. I'm not smart enough yet to do network storage. Hosted Engine setup issues.

Hello, I can for figure out what is happening with deployment of my hosted engine setup into a glusterfs cluster. For some unknown reason ansible is getting the IP address of the virbr0 interface which is the default interface created with libvirt installation. Which is down as it's not connected to anything. The error message I'm getting is [ ERROR ] fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false, "msg": "The resolved address doesn't resolve on the selected interface\n"}, But after digging deeper I found that ansible is getting a wrong "he_host_ip" value log snippet: 2025-02-10 15:39:13,484+0200 DEBUG var changed: host "localhost" var "he_host_ip" type "<class 'ansible.utils.unsafe_proxy.AnsibleUnsafeText'>" value: ""192.168.124.1"" How should I proceed to solve this? Query on Cluster CPU type in OLVM

1. Does selecting particular "Cluster CPU Type:" while creating cluster has any performance impact on vms. 2. I have Dell and HP servers, while creating cluster if i select intel broadwell or cascadelake cpu type, it shows "Host CPU Type Is Not Compatible With Cluster Properties" 3. Since Intel Nehalem is lowest CPU family version and supporting for old dell/HP, i selected it for my cluster. HOwever vm shows CPU model name "Intel Core i7 9xx (Nehalem Class Core i7)" however same host in vmware shows " Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6252 CPU @ 2.10GHz" How we can fix this CPu model name.

Dear all, I have an Ovirt cluster with 3 Dell R7525 nodes and about 70 virtual machines. I have been using ovirtbackup (python) for a long time to save the VMs. Unfortunately it has always been a very slow process that with time and the ever-increasing size of the VMs has become unusable. The oVirt cluster has two storage domains. "DATA" is a the fibre channel type (8Gbs) with 18TB and an EXPORT domain NFS managed by a dual-processor server HPE Proliant with 4x1Gbs. I'll give you an example. I have a vm with four vdisk for a 1.8TB and these are the steps performed to backup this VM. As you will see it takes many hours to get the clone from the snapshot and then many hours to copy the clone to the NFS storage. How can I reduce the time needed to save ? Thank you ! vms shutdown during boot

I have an issue with getting vms to run. I get this error: VM is down with error. Exit message: Lost connection with qemu process. I see this in the RedHat portal but I don't have entitement or I wouldn't be here. My setup Centos 9 with Ovirt 4.5 with a seperate node controlling the gluster server and ovirt and three nodes managed by the fourth. I ran this same setup in the past with no problem. I hope one of the RH folks will post the fix. It is a verified issue on the REDHAT portal I appreciate any help yu can give me.

Hi. If you do this right, you will need downtime because the VM's processor model will change, even though the VM's processor is only showing the family. Another thing that can happen is that you change the family and the host becomes non-operational in the cluster, so you would have to test that at least. But you can roll back to the original cluster family. I have done this in the past and as far as I remember, the only thing that causes a warning on the VM is that it is running on a different cluster, that's all. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers! Edit/Change MAC Address Pools

According to this link: https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/administration_guide/index.html#sect-MA…, we can edit the MAC address pool. Question: If I edit the MAC address pool, what effect will it have on the existing VMs' MAC addresses? Is there any mention in the documentation or elsewhere that indicates this change could be harmful to current configurations?

oVirt does not get keycloak groups

Hi everyone. I have setup a oVirt Installation with Keycloak for a PoC-Evaluation but i'm actually struggling with Keycloak Groups sync to oVirt. I Added Active Directory Users and also a Group Mapper for LDAP Groups -> in Keycloak i see all Users and also that they belong to Groups but the Group-Membership is not populated to oVirt back. As a result i can't grant Permissions groupwise - only per user. For the initial group-sync i ticked the Option "Drop non-existing groups during sync" which also deleted the ovirt-administrator group. Maybe this is the main Problem here. I created this group again and unchecked this option but it still does not sync the groups. What do you recommend? Purge the system and do a clean install or is there another easy fix out there?
