Hi all, I am new here, been searching the mailing list on a regular base when I encountered problems and till now I always was able to keep the system up & running. As said... till now... I have oVirt at home, and I have about 7 vm's running on it. Lately I have had some troubles with my electricity, which results in a complete power outage on a irregular base. Yesterday I had a power outage which left the system unbootable with the following errors: error: ../../grub-core/loader/i386/pc/linux.c:170:invalid magic number. error: ../../grub-core/loader/i386/pc/linux.c:1418:you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue Normally this can be solved following https://access.redhat.com/solutions/5829141, but his time also the files in /boot had a size of 0 bytes. So basically i did not have a working kernel on the system anymore. https://www.thegeekdiary.com/centos-rhel-7-how-to-install-kernel-from-rescu… does work for CentOS 8 also, but the ovirt 4.8 iso does not have the same directory structure. Using CentOS 8 installs a kernel, but not a bootable system. Is there a way i can start the installer in troubleshooting mode so I can reinstall just the kernel on the system?

gluster 5834 Unsynced entries present

yesterday I had a glich and my second ovnode2 server restarted here are some errors in the events : VDSM ovnode3.telecom.lan command SpmStatusVDS failed: Connection timeout for host 'ovnode3.telecom.lan', last response arrived 2455 ms ago. Host ovnode3.telecom.lan is not responding. It will stay in Connecting state for a grace period of 86 seconds and after that an attempt to fence the host will be issued. Invalid status on Data Center Default. Setting Data Center status to Non Responsive (On host ovnode3.telecom.lan, Error: Network error during communication with the Host.). Executing power management status on Host ovnode3.telecom.lan using Proxy Host ovnode1.telecom.lan and Fence Agent ipmilan:10.5.1.16. about the expiration time of the oVirt certs

As you know, there are many kinds of certificates in Ovirt, used for communication, authentication and so on. However, in practice, there is a security risk related to the above certificates. That is, you need to generate a new certificate after the certificate expires. Otherwise, a problem will occur. In addition, different certificates expire at different times, which brings a lot of management trouble to users. Especially in the production system, a huge virtualization cluster may run thousands of VMS. If a cluster certificate has a problem, the impact is very serious. So I felt there was an urgent need for a technical tool that could help users quickly locate certificates, identify their expiration dates, and rebuild them. Even if there is no tool, there should be a way to solve the problems caused by partial certificate expiration. I think it should include the following points: First, how to list the certificate in detail Second, how to check the certificate expiration time Third, how to rebuild the certificate Does anyone else have this kind of confusion? Hi, I'm making a bare metal oVirt installation, version 4.4.8. 'ovirt-engine' command ends well, however, we're using a third-party certificate (from LetsEncrypt) both for the apache server and the ovirt-websocket-proxy. So we changed configuration files regarding httpd and ovirt-websocket-proxy. Once changed the configurations, if I try to log in to the oVirt engine, I get a "PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target" error. In prior versions we used to add the chain to the /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/.truststore file, however, simply listing the current certificates seems not to be working on 4.4.8. # LANG=C keytool -list -keystore /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/.truststore -alias intermedia_le -storepass mypass keytool error: java.io.IOException: Invalid keystore format Is there something I'm missing here? Balancing actions not shown in events list

Hello, I have a cluster composed of 4 hosts, with 2 hosts in site A and 2 hosts in site B. Version of engine and hosts is latest 4.4.8-6. Site A is the primary site and its hosts have SPM priority high, while site B hosts have SPM priority low. For critical VMs I create a cluster affinity group so that they preferably run on hosts in site A. If I migrate a VM from one host in site A to one host in site B, the migration completes but suddenly, after a few seconds (ranging from 10 to 30) the VM comes back again (live migrates) to one host of the site A pool. Two considerations: . when the VM comes back to site A and I'm connected to the web admin gui I see in bottom right the pop-up message regarding the balancing operation: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lfm0AVwYKyyRL1qHh94AySpr3XAtV7lO/view?usp=… But then if I go in the VM, or cluster, or general events pane I don't see any direct feedback regarding this balancing that took place. That indeed contain some information (Reason: Affinity rules enforcement) but only in the VM migration line. Could it be useful to add an independent line regarding the balancing trigger that implies then a migration? . In this case could it be useful to give the user a warning that the VM will be suddenly migrated back so that he/she can think about it before having at the end two migrations with a final stage that is the starting point itself...? If I leave only one host in site A and put it into maintenance, the VMs are correctly migrated to hosts in site B and even when the host in site A comes back available, the coming back operation is not triggered. Hello, good evening, I want to consult the following case, we have two ovirt 3.6 servers with hosted-engine, yesterday some multipath servers were presented and two machines were blocked, which was not possible to start, checking we found that the ssl of the nodes They are expired and we change them only in the nodes. We could start the hosted-engine but the two nodes are not responsive comes out in vdsm daemon vdsm [43067]: vdsm ProtocolDetector.SSLHandshakeDispatcher ERROR Error during handshake: unexpected eof I appreciate any ideas or suggestions to be able to recover normal operation. Intermittent failure to upload ISOs

In the success case, there is activity in both logs. It is very intermittent. Sometimes uploads work most of the time (maybe 4 out of 5), and I've had other times that uploads do not work at all (0 out of 5). I think when it's behaving particularly badly, restarting the engine (hosted-engine --vm-shutdown, then hosted-engine --vm-start) helps, but I haven't figured out a reliable pattern. (I am logged in as admin.) I've tried several browsers, closing/reopening the browser, etc. Hoping this info will help in tracking it down.

oVirt/Hyperconverged issue

I have 4 servers of identical hardware. The documentation says "you need 3", not "you need 3 or more"; is it possible to run hyperconverged with 4 servers. Currently all the 4 nodes server has been crashed n after the 4th node try joining the hyperconverged 3nodes cluster. Kindly advise. FYI currently i'm trying to reinstall back all the OS back due mentioned incident happen. BR Faizal

Host reboots when network switch goes down

Hi, we are experiencing a weird issue with our Ovirt setup. We have two physical hosts (DC1 and DC2) and mounted Lenovo NAS storage for all VM data. They are connected via a managed network switch. What happens is that if switch goes down for whatever reason (firmware update etc), physical host reboots. Not sure if this is an action performed by Ovirt but I suspect it is because connection to mounted storage is lost and it performs some kind of an emergency action. I would need to get some direction pointers to find out a) who triggers the reboot and why c) a way to prevent reboots by increasing storage? timeouts Switch reboot takes 2-3 minutes. Ovirt 4.3 Upload of Image fails

Hi, I am trying to upload an image to a Ovirt 4.3 Instance but it keeps failing. After a few seconds it says paused by system. The test connection is successful in the upload image window so we have installed the certificate properly. Due to an older thread(https://www.mail-archive.com/users@ovirt.org/msg50954.html) I also checked if it has something to do with wifi. But I am not even using a wifi connection. Hi, We upgraded from oVirt 4.3.8 to 4.4.8 and sometimes we're finding events like these in the event log (3-4 times/day): Failed to update OVF disks 77818843-f72e-4d40-9354-4e1231da341f, OVF data isn't updated on those OVF stores (Data Center KVMRojo, Storage Domain pv04-003). Failed to update VMs/Templates OVF data for Storage Domain pv02-002 in Data Center KVMRojo. I found [1], however, it seems not to solve the issue. I restarted all the hosts and we're still getting the messages. We couldn't upgrade hosts to 4.4 yet, FWIW. Maybe it's caused by this? If someone could shed some light about this, I'd be grateful. Hi all, Anyone tried using Templates with Managed Block Storage? I created a VM on MBS and then took a snapshot. This worked but as soon as I created a Template from snapshot, the template got created but there is no disk attached to the template. Anyone seeing something similar? Thanks

Managed Block Storage issues

Hi all, I am trying to set up Managed block storage and have the following issues. My setup: Latest oVirt Node NG : 4.4.8 Latest oVirt Engine : 4.4.8 1. Unable to copy to iSCSI based block storage I created a MBS with Synology UC3200 as a backend ( supported by Cinderlib ). It was created fine but when I try to copy disks to it, it fails. Upon looking at the logs from SPM, I found "qemu-img" failed with an error that it cannot open "/dev/mapper/xxxxxxxxxx" : Permission Error. Had a look through the code and digging out more, I saw that a. Sometimes /dev/mapper/xxxx symlink isn't created ( log attached ) b. The ownership to /dev/mapper/xxxxxx and /dev/dm-xx for the new device always stays at root:root I added a udev rule ACTION=="add|change", ENV{DM_UUID}=="mpath-*", GROUP="qemu", OWNER="vdsm", MODE="0660" and the disk copied correctly when /dev/mapper/xxxxx got created. 2. Copy progress finishes in UI very early than the actual qemu-img process. The UI shows the Copy process is completed successfully but it's actually still copying the image. This happens both for ceph and iscsi based mbs. Is there any known workaround to get iSCSI MBS working? Kind regards, Shantur

I have 4 servers of identical hardware. The documentation says "you need 3", not "you need 3 or more"; is it possible to run hyperconverged with 4 servers. Currently all the 4 nodes server has been crashed n after the 4th node try joining the hyperconverged 3nodes cluster. Kindly advise. FYI currently i'm trying to reinstall back all the OS back due mentioned incident happen. /BR Faizal

Hi Diggy, If you have updated to oVirt 4.4.8 prior to 4.4.8.6 async release, it means your system got impacted. From the document: Overview of Live Storage Migration Virtual disks can be migrated from one storage domain to another while the virtual machine to which they are attached is running. This is referred to as live storage migration. When a disk attached to a running virtual machine is migrated, a snapshot of that disk's image chain is created in the source storage domain, and the entire image chain is replicated in the destination storage domain. As such, ensure that you have sufficient storage space in both the source storage domain and the destination storage domain to host both the disk image chain and the snapshot. A new snapshot is created on each live storage migration attempt, even when the migration fails. Consider the following when using live storage migration: You can live migrate multiple disks at one time. Multiple disks for the same virtual machine can reside across more than one storage domain, but the image chain for each disk must reside on a single storage domain. You can live migrate disks between any two storage domains in the same data center. You cannot live migrate direct LUN hard disk images or disks marked as shareable. But where do users perform online storage migrations? There seems to be no interface.

In fact, I am very interested in the part you mentioned, because my environment is running relational database, which usually requires a large amount of memory, and some systems clearly need to configure HUGEPAGE memory (such as Oracle). Hypervisor broken

Hi all, I am new here, been searching the mailing list on a regular base when I encountered problems and till now I always was able to keep the system up & running. As said... till now... I have oVirt at home, and I have about 7 vm's running on it. Lately I have had some troubles with my electricity, which results in a complete power outage on a irregular base. Yesterday I had a power outage which left the system unbootable with the following errors: error: ../../grub-core/loader/i386/pc/linux.c:170:invalid magic number. error: ../../grub-core/loader/i386/pc/linux.c:1418:you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue Normally this can be solved following https://access.redhat.com/solutions/5829141, but his time also the files in /boot had a size of 0 bytes. So basically i did not have a working kernel on the system anymore. https://www.thegeekdiary.com/centos-rhel-7-how-to-install-kernel-from-res... does work for CentOS 8 also, but the ovirt 4.8 iso does not have the same directory structure. Using CentOS 8 installs a kernel, but not a bootable system. When booting the ovirt kernel, I get a rescue prompt with the following error: "Warning: /dev/onn/ovirt-node-ng-4.4.6.3-0.20210518.0+1 does not exist" Is there a way i can start the installer in troubleshooting mode so I can do a reinstall and keep the current configuration or can I just reinstall and import the current datacenter in it?

Dear all, I have just updated my ovirt installation, with self hosted engine, from 4.4.5 to 4.4.8.5-1. Everything went smoothly and in a few minutes the system was back up and running. A little issue is still puzzling me. I am asked to update from 4.5 to 4.6 the cluster and data center compatibility level. When I try to issue the command from the cluster config I get this error: > Error while executing action: Cannot update cluster because the update > triggered update of the VMs/Templates and it failed for the following: > HostedEngine. To fix the issue, please go to each of them, edit, > change the Custom Compatibility Version (or other fields changed > previously in the cluster dialog) and press OK. Ooops! in last step of Hyperconverged deployment

Hi, In the second engine dep run in Hyperconverged deployment I get red "Ooops!" in cockpit. I think it fails on some networking setup. The first oVirt Node says "Hosted Engine is up!" but the other nodes is not added to HostedEngine yet. There is no network connectivity to the Engine outside node1, I can ssh to engine from node1 on the right IP-address. Please tell what logs I should pull.

As long as there is memory on the physical machine, the more virtual machines the better? In our usage scenario, there are many virtual machines with databases, and their memory varies greatly. For some virtual machines, 4G memory is enough, while for some virtual machines, 64GB memory is needed. I want to know what is the best use of memory for a virtual machine, since the virtual machine is just a QEMU emulation process on a physical machine, and I worry that it is not using as much memory as a physical machine. Understand this so that we can develop guidelines for optimal memory usage scenarios for virtual machines. Thank you!

Sparse VMs from Templates - Storage issues

Hi all, I have a setup as detailed below - iSCSI Storage Domain - Template with Thin QCOW2 disk - Multiple VMs from Template with Thin disk oVirt Node 4.4.4 When the VMs boots up it downloads some data to it and that leads to increase in volume size. I see that every few seconds the VM gets paused with "VM X has been paused due to no Storage space error." and then after few seconds "VM X has recovered from paused back to up" Sometimes after a many pause and recovery the VM dies with "VM X is down with error. Exit message: Lost connection with qemu process." and I have to restart the VMs. My questions. 1. How to work around this dying VM? 2. QCOW2 Formatted Virtual Machine Storage QCOW2 is a storage format for virtual disks. QCOW stands for QEMU copy-on-write. The QCOW2 format decouples the physical storage layer from the virtual layer by adding a mapping between logical and physical blocks. Each logical block is mapped to its physical offset, which enables storage over-commitment and virtual machine snapshots, where each QCOW volume only represents changes made to an underlying virtual disk. The initial mapping points all logical blocks to the offsets in the backing file or volume. When a virtual machine writes data to a QCOW2 volume after a snapshot, the relevant block is read from the backing volume, modified with the new information and written into a new snapshot QCOW2 volume. Then the map is updated to point to the new place. Raw The raw storage format has a performance advantage over QCOW2 in that no formatting is applied to virtual disks stored in the raw format. Virtual machine data operations on virtual disks stored in raw format require no additional work from hosts. When a virtual machine writes data to a given offset in its virtual disk, the I/O is written to the same offset on the backing file or logical volume. Raw format requires that the entire space of the defined image be preallocated unless using externally managed thin provisioned LUNs from a storage array.

I am using oVirt Open Virtualization Manager Software Version:4.4.6.8-1.el8 and we have single node running on oVirt Node 4.4.6. We are facing slowness while using VM and also we face connection reset issue between VM and Target servers ( Nexus ) We are getting below logs in ovirt manager events VM "vmname" is not responding Getting this for all the running VMs . Cannot activate a Storage Domain after an oVirt crash

Hi, We're running oVirt 4.3.8 and we recently had a oVirt crash after moving too much disks between storage domains. Concretely, one of the Storage Domains reports status "Unknown", "Total/Free/Guaranteed free spaces" are "[N/A]". After trying to activate it in the Domain Center we see messages like these from all of the hosts: VDSM hostX command GetVGInfoVDS failed: Volume Group does not exist: (u'vg_uuid: Usi3y8-S4eq-EXtl-FA58-MA3K-b4vE-4d9SCp',) I tried putting the Storage Domain in maintenance and it fails with messages like: Storage Domain iaasb13 (Data Center KVMRojo) was deactivated by system because it's not visible by any of the hosts. Failed to update OVF disks 8661acd1-d1c4-44a0-a4d4-ddee834844e9, OVF data isn't updated on those OVF stores (Data Center KVMRojo, Storage Domain iaasb13). Failed to update VMs/Templates OVF data for Storage Domain iaasb13 in Data Center KVMRojo. I'm sure the storage domain backend is up and running, and the LUN being exported. Any hints how can I debug this problem and restore the Storage Domain? Thanks.

I'm in trouble....

Luckily this is for a home lab and nothing critical is lost. However I was trying to change the subnet my host was on. And I found out that you cant do that. So I reverted back but my hosted engine wasnt happy about my NFS mounts. so I did a engine-cleanup and an engine-setup. Went through the prompts and thought nothing of it. I logged back into ovirt, and everything looks like it was a brand new install. No VMs or anything. I believe I have a fairly recent backup somewhere... trying to track that down, but it's not looking good. Currently running 4.3.10. I have been planning out my 4.4 upgrade anyways. I would prefer to not start from scratch... but if I do it is not the end of the world, will just take a lot more time. Looking for some guidance! Thank you.

Once that is done, all other SSH access is though those credentials. You should be able to change the root password without issue. I have successfully installed and deployed OLVM, where the Engine uses a separate physical server and the virtual machines work on other worker servers. Due to the company's internal security policy, I now need to change the root user password for all servers. Is that ok? Will cluster running be affected? Thanks!

I am trying deploy oVirt4.3 for windows VMs, and entercountered the same problem as:https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1940707, so i checked this solution:https://access.redhat.com/solutions/5893381, but no any solution on this verified solution page. It seems that oVirt will remove SSO support for windows, any way, i just need find a workaround for this, thanks google,i searched and found an OvirtCredProv.dll works BUT only works when VM poweron. it does NOT work when unlock/sign in after locked/sign off. i checked the VDSM log,find that VDSM didn't send desktopLogin command to OGA when sign in/ unlok.
