oVirt Storage quota problems

Dear oVirt, I am experiencing a quota related problem regarding two things: 1. Quota usage and exception trigger 2. User assigned as quota consumer First issue: I have defined quota for storage ( qstorage ), setting all following items: * Defining quota for storage, with threshold and grace * Setting quota mode to enforced in datacenter * Added Users as consumers of the Quota * Updated quota from Default to qstorage for Templates and related images * Updated quota from Default to qstorage from all existing VMs and the related Disks Problem: * the percentage of the Storage Consumption is jumping up and down, between 3% and 97%, and at certain point goes back to Unlimited * when checking under Storage tab inside quota name, the value “Used MB out of Total MB” is correct, however, when attempting to exceed the threshold, I am not getting a warning, even though I am consumer of a quota Second issue: User is added to qstorage quota as consumer. Still, when he tries to launch the VMs, Waring is displayed: Cannot add VM. The user is not a consumer of the Quota assigned to the resource. Have I missed something – could it be a permission issue, not a consumer issue. All my users are utilizing Administration Portal with limited set of permissions. They all have same Role assigned, but only few of them are having the problem I described as Second problem. NFS ISO Domain - Outage ?

Hi Ovirt Mailing-list Hope you are well. We had an outage over several ovirt clusters. It looks like we had the same ISO NFS domain shared to all off them, many of the VM's had a CD attached to it. The NFS server went down for an hour, all hell broke lose when the NFS server went down. Some of the ovirt nodes became "red/unresponssive" on the ovirt dashboard. We learned now to spilt the NFS server for ISO's and/or remove the ISO's when done. Has anyone seen similar issues with an NFS ISO Domain? Is there special options we need to pass to the mount to get around this? Can we put the ISO's somewhere else? Regards Nardus

ETL Service

Hi All, I am having a strange issue. I configured my DWH scale with scales that I would like to report on. I checked this morning, and the last row in my PostgreSQL DB is from the 9th. I checked the logs, and I see that it is referring to an "ETL Service" which I am not familiar with. I have attached the lines in the text document. If anybody could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Re-ip storage

Good afternoon all, We are upgrading our storage backbone, moving it off of our common 1 GBit backbone to a 10 dedicated storage backbone. When this happens, we will need to re-ip the storage domains with to IP address of the 10 GBit release. For a period of time, as we upgrade the rest of our hardware, we may have to operate both the original and the new IP addresses. *Some gotchas:* 1. My controller is at level 4.3, but some of my my compute nodes are at level 4.2 because they have older Penryn class processors. We didn't plan the upgrade - it happened because our controller's hard drive failed and took the cluster with it. *Practical question:* 1. Can I simply operate the same storage domain on two IP addresses on different physical networks eg. 10.10.1.x and 10.10.10.x ? 2. Is an alternative solution to operate two storage domains from the storage appliance, and migrate the storage from the 1GBit domain to the 10 GBit domain over time, then drop/abandon the old storage domain once everything is on the 10 GBit? I have plenty of storage to do this. 3. Is there a better way I haven't thought of? I am planning to host my VM images on backend FreeNAS filer. I am assuming VMs are downloaded and run in the memory of PC running oVirt engine. What would be the way to install all of oVirt on one PC and just store VMs on freeNAS? Also more importantly, what type of HW conifg would that PC need for running a bunch of LAMP VMs?? Thanks. RJ

Upload/download disks through muCommander

Hi all, I want to share with you that a new version of muCommander has been released and this version includes integration with oVirt! A demo of the provided functionality is available at [1]: First, we connect to RHV (but the following process would work the same for oVirt) and browse the content if its storage domain. Then, we take two virtual disk images, one of format=raw and size=3G and second of format=qcow2 and size=2G, and upload them to that storage domain. In the meantime, we download an iso file from the storage domain and explore its content. We check the format and size for the uploaded disks. Lastly, we remove the first disk from within muCommander and see that it also disappears from the storage domain. That can be seen as a front-end of oVirt's Image I/O [2]. However, please be aware of the following limitations: 1. Snapshots are not supported. 2. There is no way to specify the virtual size of the disk. This means it works nicely for preallocated disks and for uploading iso files to data domains (note the filename must end with the '.iso' extension), but thin-provisioned disks would probably need to be extended after the upload. 3. oVirt-specific things like disk description, host to upload the disk to, wipe-after-delete, and others cannot be specified. This version of muCommander (v0.9.4-2) can be downloaded from [3]. Please feel free to to file issues for bugs or possible enhancements at [4] Note that muCommander is not under the oVirt umbrella. Help recovering cluster

Hello all, New to the group, apologies for any poor information. I have a home lab with a single host ovirt setup. I actually don't think I ever set it up exactly right, the agent vm was never created, it was running on the host server. But it ran and I had a handful of vm's running on it successfully. I knew I had to rebuild it but was waiting for funds for extra hardware. Then the other day I came home and could no longer access the web portal. Could get to the login page but after entering my auth info it just hangs. I'm honestly not even sure where to start. Does anyone know any good troubleshooting docs? Or any idea what may be happening? I can see the VM images and such in the proper folders so I don't think I have .lost anything. But can't access any of the vm's now. Any help would be appreciated. What if anything can be done to improve small file performance with gluster?

I have 3 server HCI with Gluster replica 3 storage (10GBe and SSD disks). Small file performance inner-vm is pretty terrible compared to a similar spec'ed VM using NFS mount (10GBe network, SSD disk) VM with gluster storage: # dd if=/dev/zero of=test2.img bs=512 count=1000 oflag=dsync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 512000 bytes (512 kB) copied, 53.9616 s, 9.5 kB/s VM with NFS: # dd if=/dev/zero of=test2.img bs=512 count=1000 oflag=dsync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 512000 bytes (512 kB) copied, 2.20059 s, 233 kB/s This is a very big difference, 2 seconds to copy 1000 files on NFS VM VS 53 seconds on the other. Aside from enabling libgfapi is there anything I can tune on the gluster or VM side to improve small file performance? I have seen some guides by Redhat in regards to small file performance but I'm not sure what/if any of it applies to oVirt's implementation of gluster in HCI.

qcow on LVM‽ Why‽

Hi *, I’m a bit frustrated, so please excuse any harshness in this mail. Whose idea was it to place qcow on logical volumes anyway? I was shrinking a hard disc: first the filesystems inside the VM, then the partitions inside the VM, then the LV… then I wanted to convert the LV to a compressed qcow2 file for transport, and it told me that the source is corrupted. Huh? I had already wondered why I was unable to inspect the LV on the host the usual way (kpartx -v -a /dev/VG/LV after finding out, with “virsh --readonly -c qemu:///system domblklist VM_NAME”, which LV is the right one). Turns out that ovirt stores qcow on LVs instead of raw images ☹ Well, vgcfgrestore to my rescue: - vgcfgrestore -l VG_NAME - vgcfgrestore -f /etc/… VG_NAME The image was still marked as corrupted, but exported fine. I could not write it back to the LV as preallocated, which seems to be what ovirt does, because qemu-img doesn’t wish to do that when the target is a special device (not a regular file). Meh. Does ovirt handle raw images on LV, and if so, how can we enable this for new VMs? If not, whyever the hell not? And whose “great” idea was this anyway? Windows deployment

I have a Windows Deployment server that works with Hyper-V. I am tryng to see if it will bare metal provision to Ovirt. I have the necessary drivers loaded and initially it gets an IP and starts the installation. When it comes to the screen starting setup, I get an IP error. I have included a screenshot. Has anyone see this before? I also considered provisioning from Foreman but I would rather use what I have instead of recreating the entire installation. Any help would be appreciated. subnets

I have a network in place with several subnets, one for iscsi and one for virtual pbx and VoIP phones. I use the iscsi in Ovirt, but I cannot get Ovirt to recognize and use the physical vlan 3 network for phones. If I add it and the subnet, Ovirt will make give it an IP, but it's an isolated network with no connectivity to the other vm's or the Internet. I have read several topics on this but I can't get it to work properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Debian 10 template - cloud init not working

Hi, I have tried centos7 & 8, debian 9 and ubuntu 18.04 template based VMs with cloud init (Initial run/use cloud init) and they all work as expected. However, the debian 10 template based VM seems *not* to execute the cloud init at all. It boots but hostname is not set and users / password are not set. You can't log in since there is no users and passwords/keys. Is this a known issue? Or am I missing something? The templates are from ovirt-image-repository storage domain. I have also created newer debian 10.3.0 template via ovirt.image-template ansible role. Results are the same. I am running ovirt 4.4-pre. Thanks, Sakari

Different cpu flags preventing live migration

Hello, I would like to share some problems that I'm finding on an environment based on RHV, but could impact also oVirt based environments. For my problems I'm working on an opened case to understand root cause. I have Dell R730 hypervisors (with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 @ 2.40GHz cpu) and some VMs configured for "customized" high performance. In the sense that I configure VM as high performance type and then: - I enable the graphical console (I remove the flag of headless Mode" in Console section); - In Host section I set for "Start Running On" Any Host in Cluster and allow manual and automating migration; - I also set HA in high availability section, accepting default values for leasing, resume behaviour, ecc.. These settings however have the effect to leave enable the flag related to "Pass-Through Host CPU" in Host section. I noticed that with same Bios, ecc with kernel in 4.3.8 (that seems equal between oVirt and RHV): [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ uname -r 3.10.0-1062.12.1.el7.x86_64 [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ I have this cpu flag set: invpcid_single Instead on the same host in 4.3.5 (eg kernel 3.10.0-1062.el7.x86_64) the flag is not set. This creates problem during upgrade from 4.3.5 to 4.3.8 because initially I empty one host and update it, but then I cannot live migrate back the VMs to update the other one, due to the pass-through flag set, that requires exact set of flags. So crosscheck on a test environment in case you have the "Pass-Through Host CPU" set in Host section for any critical VM you cannot shutdown. BTW: the flag is somehow tricky to remove if you set the VM as High Performance type; you have to: edit VM --> Host Start Running On --> change to select a specific host among the available ones Now you can remove the "Pass-Through Host CPU" flag --> remove it Start Running On --> change again to "Any Host in Cluster" Save Now you can live migrate this "customized" High Performance VM But the problem is that if the VM is running, you have to shutdown it to get the change in effect. 1-Host home setup question

Hey folks, for a home-vm setup (1 host): If I setup the Hardware with CentOS7, configure Gluster et all by hand and get things up and running this way: Would it be a viable option to install the ovirt engine directly on the host as well? This would save some overhead. oVirt Python SDK and monitor export as OVA task

Hello, sometimes I have environments (typically with Oracle RDBMS on virtual machines) where there is one boot disk and one (often big, such as 500Gb or more) data disk. The data disk has already its application backup (typically RMAN) and I want to complement it with a backup of only the boot disk of the operating system and VM configuration. I'm almost done completing a script using oVirt Python SDK and sharing for comments. I could be wrong, but I didn't find any ansible module to do this with Ansible playbooks: I can only save all the VM, that in my case wouldn't be necessary and instead time and storage wasting. The basic steps are: - make a snapshot of the target vm, composed only by the boot disk - clone the snapshot - export the clone as OVA - delete clone - delete snapshot There are some things to discuss about, probably when I will share the overall job (such as the name to give to the boot disk, if not using the bootable flag, the way to import the OVA in case of actual need, where you will have to comment out some fs entries related to missing disks, ecc.). The only thing missing is how to monitor the export to ova task that, as with Ansible, it completes almost immediately, while the export is actually altready running. I need to monitor it, so only at its real end I can run the last 2 steps of the above list of tasks. Can you give me any hint? Not found very much in guide or docs on the web. I'm currently using a sleep because my boot disk is about 20Gb in size and I know that in less than 2 minutes it normally completes. The export as ova is very similar to what found in the examples and they don't contain a monitor for it but only the connection.close() call: cloned_vm_service.export_to_path_on_host( host=types.Host(id=host.id), directory = export_as_ova_dir, filename = cloned_vm.name + '.ova' ) Thanks in advance, Gianluca

EqualLogic SAN controller switchover

How well does oVirt handle an EqualLogic SAN controller switchover event? IIRC that can result in a short iSCSI "pause" (can't remember how long it takes) - I'm not sure what oVirt's threshold before VMs (including the hosted engine) get paused for storage timeouts. I've got a small setup where the active SAN controller's battery has gone bad, so I need to switch to the other controller, and I'm trying to figure out the impact - do I need to shut all VMs (including the engine) down first, will they just briefly pause and then continue, etc. -- Chris Adams <cma(a)cmadams.net>

All seems ok from a configuration point of view, but if I use OVN based interfaces on two VMs, they are not able to ping, both if I put them on the same host and if I put on different hosts. oVirt 4.3.8 and almost unpredictable export as ova duration

Hello, on a test oVirt environment I have export as ova task that, based on same disk size (20Gb) it could last 35 seconds or 11 minutes.... During the long lasting test I see on host that almost all and only I/O (in the measure of 6-7 MB/s) is done by a [loop0] process that has ppid 2 and apparently (with "fuser" command on /dev/loop0 file) is uses by noone. Is it implicitly used by the "qemu-img convert " command of the export as ova? Why so great difference in elapsed time? The disk is the same of the same VM. The oVirt env has almost nothing running only 2 CentOS 8.1 VMs doing nothing. Same host used for export as ova in the two runs in a 20 minutes timeframe. As the path for OVA I'm temporarily using a connected export domain subdirectory, using directory='/rhev/data-center/mnt/10.4.192.69:_export_ovirt/dump' Donna if it can have a role in the problem... Hi, no, fortunately, the bug didn't came back. It looks like, that the engine needs its time to settle after changing the cluster compatibility version. After about 2 hours, the CPU load was as low as before. The time to load the VM UI takes a little bit more time, but I think this is also normal, because all VMs still have the orange triangle and need a reboot. Sorry for the false positive, but I was really afraid about the high load. Hi, I have upgraded yesterday one of our ovirt environments from 4.2.8 to 4.3.8. We have a hosted engine, 25 hosts and about 150 VMs running there. After upgrading the cluster compatibility version from 4.2 to 4.3, I have seen a huge increase of CPU load on the engine VM. The engine had 4 cores (16GB mem) and never had load issues, but after the upgrade, the system has a load of 6 and more. I have increased the CPUs to 8, because working in the UI was impossible. I have noticed, that the load always increase, when I load the VM UI tab, where now all VMs have the orange triangle with pending changes: Custom compatibility version The problem I have, is, that I can't reboot now all VMs, maybe in the next 3 or 4 weeks. Working now with the UI is quite problematic, because of the slowness. The engine VM was already rebooted, but didn't solve the problem. What logs do you need and is there a workaround available? Dear oVirt, My platform is running SHE oVirt version 4.3.8. Why is my StorageQuota consumption still showing “ 0 out of 3700” ? Did I forget something? Storage performance comparison (gluster vs FC)

Hi, We currently use oVirt on two hosts that connect to a shared storage using SAS. In oVirt this is a "FC" storage domain. Since the warrantly on the storage box is ending, we are looking at alternatives. One of the options would be to use gluster and use a "hyperconverged" setup where compute and gluster are on the same hosts. We would probably end up with 3 hosts and a "replica 3 arbiter 1" gluster volume. (Or is another volume type more recommended for this type of setup?) I was wondering what the expected performance would be of this type of setup compared to a shared storage over FC. I expect the I/O latency of gluster to be much higher than the latency for the SAS connected storage box? Has anybody compared these storage setups? Hello, I'm registering problems with spice console session that remains stuck and not working after vm migration. Tried with 7.6 and 8.1 based virtual machines. The client is an updated Fedora 31 system. Using lsof -Pp pid command I don't see any tcp sessione opened Making the same when session is connected before migration: remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 21u IPv4 243582 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35218->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 22u IPv4 248960 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35226->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 23u IPv4 248961 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35228->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 24u IPv4 248962 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35230->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) Right after migration I see only the close wait of the previous but not a new one with the ip of the destination host: remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 21u IPv4 243582 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35218->10.4.192.32:5902 (CLOSE_WAIT) And after a few seconds none. Also, closing the blocked spice window doesn't work: it becomes gray with in the middle "Waiting for display 1..." and I have to "kill -9 the remote-viewer process. Strangely the reverse works. After force closing spice console and connecting to the remote and making migrate reverse, the spice console session keeps working... As you are replacing an old brick, you have to recreate the old LV and mount it on the same location. Then you can use the gluster's "reset-brick" (i thing ovirt UI has that option too) and all data will be replicated there. You got also the "replace-brick" option if you decided to change the mount location. P.S.: with replica volumes your volume should be still working, in case it has stopped - you have to investigate before proceeding. HostedEngine Upgrade and Rollback

Hi Everyone, Our HostedEngine is previously running in version 4.3.7 then updated it to 4.3.8. Before the update, we did a full backup of the HE. After a successful update, we're testing to roll it back to the previous backup. The cluster setting has been rolled back but the Hosted version is still 4.3.8. Is there a best way to rollback a HostedEngine after a successful minor update? I've read somewhere that if an upgrade / update is unsuccessful, HostedEngine will be rolled back to the previous version automatically. Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to specify only certain disks to snapshot using the ansible playbooks? We have servers with hostname_disk0 and hostname_disk1. And i just want to create snapshots with the OS disk which is always hostname_disk0. Thanks in advance. Tom

oVirt ansible backup improvements

If anyone has been following along, I had previously shared a blog post and GitHub repo regarding my unofficial solution for backing up oVirt VMs using Ansible. Martin Necas reached out to me and we collaborated on some great improvements. Namely, it is now possible to run the playbook from any host without requiring direct access to storage (which I was previously using for export status verification). There were several other improvements and cleanups made as well. Dashboard very slow to load: change default page possible?

Hi, I'm noticing that after upgrading to 4.3.8, sometimes the dashboard is very slow and it takes minutes to display and to let me work, even if I'm not interested at all to the dashboard for the activities I have to do. As a consequence it becomes a bottleneck. On engine I see that during these moments the postmaster process related to ovirt_engine_history database is 100% cpu consuming. Almost every minor update I run vacuum but I don't know if there is something else involved. Is there any bug open with in in 4.3.8? Is there any option to set another page as the landing one when I open web admin portal? I have similar problem on a RHV environment where I have done upgrade form 4.2.7 to 4.2.8 and then 4.3.8 in the same day (eventually I'm going to open a case fir this one). When passing from 4.2.7 to 4.2.8 I chose full vacuum for the engine history database: Perform full vacuum on the oVirt engine history database ovirt_engine_history@localhost? This operation may take a while depending on this setup health and the configuration of the db vacuum process.
