I have had this problem and I solved it today. In my Rocky linux 8 environment I reinstalled one of the servers and it stopped working. I tried doing what our friend indicated by disabling encryption, putting the host into maintenance and reinstalling... but nothing. What solved my problem was adding the firewall rules that were missing on one of my hosts.

Hi, To install oVirt on EL8 derivatives, https://www.ovirt.org/download/install_on_rhel.html has instructions on how to disable the extras repo, and configures two repositories from CentOS 8 Stream. Now that CentOS 8 Stream is EOL, what is the procedure to install/update oVirt on EL8 machines? Have the required packages from CentOS Stream 8 been merged in EL8.10? Storage Solution for Ovirt4.5

Hi Guys, I am using Ovirt4.3 with 5 hosts and SAN for 10 years and now looking for upgrade to it on latest version. Now i want to use server as storage instead of SAN due to economic reasons. So, i have used tgt/target-cli and created LUNs for storage and access through iscsi and everything seems well. Would it be a good solution? Also what could be possible limitation and disadvantage over to SAN box? Thanks. AS

Hello, Thanks for the prompt reply. Can I somehow modify the VM configuration on disk (v5 data storage on an NFS share) before importing the VM (using Storage domain / NFS / VM import). Hello all, I'm evaluating switching our existing oVirt clusters to Oracle Linux 8 oVirt 4.5. It seems that Oracle has completely disabled QXL/Spice (leaving only VGA and Cirrus) on their oVirt fork (1). I'm trying to import a VM from an existing oVirt data storage into an Oracle cluster, but I'm getting 'VAR__ACTION__IMPORT,VAR__TYPE__VM,ACTION_TYPE_FAILED_ILLEGAL_VM_DISPLAY_TYPE_IS_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_OS' error. Comparing the spice-related packages in Oracle and CentOS based oVirt installation, I see no changes. Two questions: 1. Can I somehow enable QXL support in Oracle oVirt? 2. Assuming I can't, can I somehow editing the VM configuration without mounting in a temporary CentOS based cluster, editing the configuration and reimporting it into Oracle? Hi Everyone, Initially, In ovirt host machine qemu-kvm is running in 5901,5902,5903,5904,5906 and 5907. But suddenly, It has now running with additional ports 5900 and 5905. Can anyone know why this kind of ports ovirt is newly adding without any actions taking in machines. I Didn't restart any services in host machines.

Need some help with the renewal of the ssl certificate (I believe it is a self-signed cert )that is about to expire in a month, this is a standalone ovirt engine running software Version:4.3.4.3-1.el7. The certificate was good for 5 years and it is about to expire. As I understand correctly, this certificate is for the https access for the management page. Can this be done on a running system without affecting any hosts or VMs? Any instructions for the standalone ovirt engine scenario that you guys can share? i installed the ovirt 4.5 engine on centos stream 9 and add a ovirt node(ovirt node 4.5 iso) to this engine. i am going to run my vm on this node. i follow the instruction to create the data center, the cluster, the storage domain, upload the image. everything is fine. and after i create a vm with ubuntu image attach, i found that i can't visit the console. when i using the noVNC, it says "Something went wrong, connection is closed", when i visit vnc with virt-viewver, is says "Failed to complete handshake Error in the pull function". i try to change the console type to Bochs one and it appear the same. i change to QXL mode and the vm can't start any more. i check the log, it says "unsupported configuration: domain configuration does not support video model 'qxl'". so now i can't visit my vm by anyway. i deploy the engine follow the official instruction and keep mostly option default but why still have this issue. why the noVNC says "Something went wrong" instead of telling me what is actually wrong

Migrating Engine to a new host

To upgrade both hardware and software for the engine, I will move it to a different physical server, with a different hostname. The HTTP interface to manage it is handled by my own PKI, so I managed it myself and don’t request help from oVirt. But I wonder if there is other trap that I will need to check. Will old hosts accept communication for a new engine once I will have migrated the database ?

oVirt 4.5.6 + Windows 11 + TPM oddness

Hi folk, I'm running into a very bizarre situation. To start with, I am able to install Windows 11 perfectly fine, with or without Secure Boot enabled, and the TPM appears to function regardless. From the Windows OS itself, I can confirm that Get-TPM, tpm.msc, windows security, etc all show that the TPM looks happy and healthy and well received. However -- the system logs are absolutely flooded with the following error: The initialization of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) failed. The TPM may be in failure mode. To allow diagnosis, contact the TPM manufacturer with the attached information. And this appears to correlate with SCCM being unable to properly set up a client certificate and register. But I am not exagerating when I say it's flooding the logs -- I am currently staring at a system log with 668 log entries, 97% of which are the same TPM error repeated. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on or have seen this before? I'm running out of ideas. =/ Thanks!

Cannot create bond

Hello, I recently deploy two KVM hosts and one KVM engine. things seem to be working good so far; however, I cannot create bonds in my KVM hosts. I have 4 interfaces, two enabled (cable connected) and two disabled (cable unplugged, not needed at the moment). The ovirmgmt network is running on one of the active interfaces. I have done the following: Create LACP bond with both connected interfaces. Create Load-balancing XOR bond with both connected interfaces. Create LACP bond with both unplugged interfaces. Create Load-balancing XOR bond with both unplugged interfaces. Create LACP bond with one connected and one unplugged interface. Create Load-balancing XOR bond with one connected and one interfaces. Remove server from KVM engine, create bond at the host level using cockpit, try to add the host back into KVM cluster. None of the options i have tried successfully create the bond in the KVM cluster. I will appreciate your assistance in getting this to work. Environment details OS on all servers: Oracle Linux 8.9 with kernel 5.15.0-205.149.5.1.el8uek.x86_64 KVM engine: running on a virtual machine in vCenter KVM hosts: physical servers Software version: 4.5.4-1.0.31.el8 Thank you

ARM64 Host Failed to Add to Cluster

Hi, I configured a Rocky Linux 9 ARM64 Raspberry Pi 4B as an oVirt Host. When adding to a new Cluster under an established Datacenter it fails configuring OVN, I did make sure ovirt-provider-ovn and ovirt-provider-ovn-driver was installed. The error I found after digging into the ansible yml file on the Hosted Engine and the Python py related to configuring OVN. And I might have misread where your problems actually are... Because oVirt was born on SAN but tries to be storage agnostic, it creates its own overlay abstraction, a block layer that is then managed within oVirt even when you use NFS or GlusterFS underneath. "The ISO domain" has actually been deprecated and ISO images can be put into any domain type (e.g. also data). But they still have to be uploaded to that domain via the management engine GUI, you can't just copy the ISO images somewhere within the files and directories oVirt might create and expect them to be visible to the GUI or the VMs.

Hi Tim, HA, HCI and failover either require or at least benefit from consistent storage. The original NFS reduce the risk of inconsistency to single files, Gluster puts the onus of consistency mostly the clients and I guess Ceph is similar. iSCSI has been described as a bit the worst of everything in storage and I can appreciate that view in a HA scenario because it doesn't help with consistency. Of course, its block layer abstraction isn't really that different from SAN or NFS 4.x object storage. I last experimented with iSCSI 20 years ago, mostly because it seemed so great for booting even less cooperative diskless hosts than Sun workstations over the network. But if I had a reliable TrueNAS and wanted to run oVirt, I'd just go with NFS. AFAIK oVirt was born on SAN but with SAN outside of oVirt's purvue. So if your iSCSI setup behaves like a SAN, oVirt should be easy to get going, but I've never tried myself. And the lack of tried and tested tutorials or videos from 20 different sources might be the reason oVirt didn't quite push out everybody else.

Oracle Virtualization Manager 4.5 anyone?

Redhat's decision to shut down RHV caught Oracle pretty unprepared, I'd guess, who had just shut down their own vSphere clone in favor of a RHV clone a couple of years ago. Oracle is even less vocal about their "Oracle Virtualization" strategy, they don't even seem to have a proper naming convention or branding. But they have been pushing out OV releases without a publicly announced EOL almost a year behind Redhat for the last years. And after a 4.4 release in September 22, a few days ago on December 12th actually a release 4.5 was made public. I've operated oVirt 4.3 with significant quality issues for some years and failed to make oVirt 4.4 work with any degree of acceptable stability but Oracle's variant of 4.4 proved to be rather better than 4.3 on CentOS7 with no noticable bugs, especially in the Hyperconverged setup that I am using with GlusterFS. I assumed that this was because Oracle based their 4.4 in fact on RHV 4.4 and not oVirt, but since they're not telling, who knows? One issue with 4.4 was that Oracle is pushing their UE-Kernel and that created immediate issues e.g. with VDO missing modules for UEK and other stuff, but that was solved easily enough by using the RHEL kernel. With 4.5 Oracle obviously can't use RHV 4.5 as a base, because there is no such thing with RHV declared EOL and according to Oracle their 4.5 is based on oVirt 4.5.4, which made the quality of that release somewhat questionable, but perhaps they have spent the year that has passed since productively killing bugs... only to be caught by surprise again, I presume, by an oVirt release 4.5.5 on December 1st, that no one saw coming! Long story slightly shorter, I've been testing Oracle's 4.5 variant a bit and it's not without issues. But much worse, Oracle's variant of oVirt seems to be entirely without any community that I could find. Now oVirt has been a somewhat secret society for years, but compared to what's going on with Oracle this forum is teaming with life! So did I just not look around enough? Is there a secret lair where all those OV users are hiding? Anyhow, here is what I've tested so far and where I'd love to have some feedback: 1. Setting up a three node HCI cluster from scratch using OL8.9 and OV 4.5 Since I don't have extra physical hardware for a 3 node HCI I'm using VMware workstation 17.5 on a Workstation running Windows 2022, a test platform that has been working for all kinds of virtualization tests from VMware ESXi, via Xcp-ng and ovirt. Created three VMs with OL8.9 minimal and then installed OV 4.5. I used the UEK default kernels and then had an issue when Ansible is trying to create the (local) management engine: the VM simply could not reach the Oracle repo servers to install the packages inside the ME. Since that VM is entirely under the control of Ansible and no console access of any type is possible in that installation phase, I couldn't do diagnostics. But with 4.4 I used to have similar issues and there switching back to the Redhat kernel for the ME (and the hosts) resolved them. But with 4.5 it seems that UEK has become a baked-in dependency: the OV team doesn't even seem to do any testing with the Redhat kernel any more. Or not with the HCI setup, which has become deprecated somewhere in oVirt 4.4... Or not with the Cockpit wizard, which might be in a totally untested state, or.... Doing the same install on OL 8.9 with OV 4.4, however, did work just fine and I was even able to update to 4.5 afterwards, which was a nice surprise... ...that I could not repeat on my physical test farm using three Atoms. There switching to the UEK kernel on the hosts caused issues, hosts were becoming unresponsive, file systems inaccessible, even if they were perfectly fine at the Gluster CLI level and in the end the ME VM simply would not longer start. Switching back to the Redhat kernel resolved things there. In short, switching between the Redhat kernel and UEK, which should be 100% transparent to all things userland including hypervisors, doesn't work. But my attempts to go with a clean install of 4.5 on a Redhat kernel or UEK is also facing issues. So far the only thing that has worked was a single node HCI install using UEK and OV 4.5 and upgrading to OV 4.5 on a virtualized triple node OV 4.4 HCI cluster. Anyone else out there trying these things? I was mostly determined to move to Proxmox VE, but Oracle's OV 4.5 seemed to be handing a bit of a life-line to oVirt and the base architecture is just much more powerful (or less manual) than Proxmox, which doesn't have a management engine.

VMs don't receive unicast packets, can't reach gateway, don't get ARP responses.

Hey All, I'm reaching out because I'm working on a PoC ovirt setup, and running into some networking issues from my VMs that I just have not been able to nail down or figure out. Setup: Three Hypervisors running on the ovirt image, one NIC on each is connected to a trunk port on our data network, the other is connected to our storage network. I'm just running a basic test setup with three logical networks - ovirtmgmt, stroage, vm_network the vNics have no network filtering enabled, I have disabled and stopped firewalld on the hypervisors as well. ovirtmgmt and storage have IPs on the hypervisor, vm_network does not have an IP (Thought I did try it with no difference.) I currently just have three VMs running since it's a PoC, one on each host - they are all connected to the vm_network, and all are unable to reach their gateway (a linux device), and unable to reach each other unless they are on the same hypervisor - this is the main issue I'm dealing with. Investigation done so far: Running a ping from the VM to the Gateway IP and capturing data along the flow gives me this: If I run a tcpdump on the hypervisor I can see ARP requests being broadcasted on the correct interface (vm_network, vnet0) from the VM looking for the gateway, however I never see any ARP response from the gateway on the hypervisor, and the VMs never update their arp table and never actually attempt to send any ICMP packets. If I run a tcpdump on the gateway device, I can see ARP requests from the VM coming in, and I can see the gateway giving a unicast ARP reply - again I never see that arp reply on the hypervisor, and I never see it reach the VM. Now where it gets a little bit interesting at least. if I run an arping from the gateway device to the VM - I get a response from the VM on the broadcast arp, but I do not get any responses (or see any traffic on the hypervisor) when it moves to a unicast arp probe ping. After doing this the VM will also update it's ARP table with the gateway. If I attempt to ping the gateway from the VM after this, it will send ICMP packets, which do reach the gateway, the gateway does respond... but just like all other unicast things I never see that response on the hypervisor, and it never reaches the VM. (This only lasts for a short period of time until the VM fails to get a new ARP response and removes the entry from the arp table.) There is no firewall setup on the gateway that would prevent any of this traffic, and everything with that gateway, vlan, and IPs work just fine outside of ovirt. The behavior between VMs (on different hypervisors) is exactly the same as VM to Gateway. Where arp requests go out, the VM on a different hypervisor will see and respond to the arp broadcast request, but I never see that unicast ARP reply make it to a tcpdump on the hypervisor. TLDR: Broadcast traffic reaches the VMs, unicast packets from the VM reach their destination (If they have a record for them in their arp table), unicast replies and unicast requests to the VMs never even show up in a tcpdump on the hypervisor. No firewalls in place to explain any of these issues. I am sure I likely screwed something up during the configuration of this, but I don't see my mistake anywhere

Hello OLVM 4.5 - SHE install Our storage guy messed up the FC storage allocation -> when the SHE install got to ask about storage for the hosted_engine the expected LUN was not in the list. It took the process around an hour to get to this point so I didn't want to restart from the beginning, found that issuing a SIGHUP to the python3 process from another screen made it drop back to asking about storage again and went on to list the correctly provisioned LUNs - very useful but I didn't find mention of it in the man pages; sharing for prosperity. Migration fails after upgrading target host to oVirt Node 4.5.5

Hello all After upgrading one node from 4.5.4 to 4.5.5 the migration fails on some of the VMs. I believe the error is with qemu-kvm according to the logs below. Downgrading the packages seems not to be possible with oVirt Node, the only solution so far was rebooting back to 4.5.4 (thanks to imgbase). I also think it is related to https://lists.ovirt.org/archives/list/users@ovirt.org/thread/GGMEGFI4OGZ5QR…, but that thread is already several months old. Has someone had the same experience and found a solution? oVirt 4.5.6

Hi, When updating HE I noticed that version 4.5.6 is available, but on this link the 4.5.6 ISO NG image is not available. https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-4.5/iso/ovirt-node-ng-installer/ Even when updating the oVirt node, version 4.5.6 is not available. The oVirt node was installed using the ng installer. These versions have always been released once. What is the reason for this? Can I upgrade HE to 4.5.6 regardless? Could the version difference be a problem? Thanks for the help!

Hello, I do have the same issue as some others and tryed to follow the instruction to downgrade ansible-core. Changing disk QoS causes segfault with IO-Threads enabled (oVirt 4.3.0.4-1.el7)

We recently upgraded to 4.3.0 and have found that when changing disk QoS settings on VMs whilst IO-Threads is enabled causes them to segfault and the VM to reboot. We've been able to replicate this across several VMs. VMs with IO-Threads disabled/turned off do not segfault when changing the QoS. Hi I was trying to add the new NFS share path in the ovirt node. Hello Folks, It seems from the Ovirt 4.5.5 anouncement that oVirt Node NG (based on CentOS Stream 9) are fully supported. Can someone confirm this? What is the best way to migrate a cluster from oVirt Node NG base on CentOS Stream 8 to 9? Can the two co-exist on the same cluster during transition? Thank You!

need to renew certificates but it fails

Hello all, I want to renew certificates in my oVirt environment. I let it expire and now the engine doesn't communicate with my hosts. Keycloak SSO integration

Hello, I've successfully added my AD LDAP service in Keycloak. My connection works and I am able to search for users from Keycloak. How do I map an LDAP group 'adminusers' into the Ovirt web interface and map it to the internal administration group? I just seem to see the ovirt-internal Keycloak authentication source in the base of my Ovirt URL. Thank You!

HPE Oneview KVM appliance 8.8.0 / 8.7.0

Hello folks I realise this probably isn't the place for this but someone might be interested or have some knowledge. I deployed the KVM version of HPE Oneview 8.8 to oVirt 4.5 (OLVM 4.5) It came as a single QCOW2 disk image. The VM I created needed a couple of tweaks to get it to boot (Chipset: i440FX w/Bios for the IDE disk type, OS: RHEL7 x86_64.) The VM boots and the graphical environment starts but sticks not long after (left over weekend, no change.) I did boot into the rescue environment to look at logs, I can see all the logical volumes mounted ok so no issue there, I see apps repeatedly trying to start with no obvious reason. Very similar outcome when I tried the previous 8.7 Oneview version. We also run a VMWare estate so the sad thing is that I've fallen back to deploying the ESXi version of Oneview 8.8 - it works fine, which is a shame as I am trying to persuade our internal teams to start using oVirt/OLVM instead of VMWare! Can't create shared disk after upgrade to 4.5.4

Hi, In my lab I'm using OLVM ( I know ... it's not original oVirt but it is based on it ). I was using 4.4.10, and after upgrade to 4.5.4 I'm no longer able to create shared disks, on any storage domain (nfs or fc). When I was on previous release I was able to create and use shared disks (required for cluster systems), but after upgrade when I try to create shared disk (preallocated) I'm getting an error saying : Error while executing action: Cannot add Virtual Disk. Disk's volume format is not supported for shareable disk. In engine log I can see only this : 2024-03-31 20:04:28,997+02 WARN [org.ovirt.engine.core.bll.storage.disk.AddDiskCommand] (default task-37) [b8bc1831-260a-4253-b6fe-e0c81a6f81b6] Validation of action 'AddDisk' failed for user admin@internal-authz. Reasons: VAR__ACTION__ADD,VAR__TYPE__DISK,SHAREABLE_DISK_IS_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_VOLUME_FORMAT Does anyone have idea what could be the reason or how to solve this? Hi, I managed to resolve this issue. Long story short : - take configuration details from hosts about disks (especially if direct disks are being used, commands like multipath -ll, lsblk, blkid...) - take a xml dump from all running VM's - install new standalone engine - add existing hosts to new image (running machines were detected with prefix "external" - configure logical networks after checking hosts network adapters - if direct disks exists in your configuration, create virtual disks for them by using xml dump files and info from hosts - shutdown running vm's (all with prefix "external") - shutdown all kvm hosts and left only one kvm host running (to prevent sanlock) - import existing storage domain from running host - use VM import tab in Storage domain to view vm's available for import - delete machines with prefix "external" because import detect machines with same VM ID - run import VM's from storage domain, one by one ... and that's it, after import run the machines ***If there are no VM's listed in VM import tab after adding storage domain, than you need to import disks from Disk import tab in storage domain, and then manually create virtual machines with information from xml dump files (to be able to configure disks,networks,cpu,ram ... like it was originally configured). After creating VM's you should be able to run them.*** Maybe it can help someone. Best regards, Igor

FQDN error while creating ovirt engine

Hi All, I'm using a fresh 4.5.5 install, when I try to create the ovirt engine, I get the below error : The task includes an option with an undefined variable. The error was: list object has no element 0. list object has no element 0\nThe error appears to be in '/usr/share/ansible/collections/ansible_collections/ovirt/ovirt/roles/hosted_engine_setup/tasks/fetch_host_ip.yml': line 32, column 7, but may\nbe elsewhere in the file depending on the exact syntax problem.\n\nThe offending line appears to be:\n\n when: hostname_resolution_output.rc != 0\n - name: Parse host address resolution\n ^ here\n I tried adding entries to my DNS or setting the local /etc/hosts as follows: 192.168.1.2 ovirt-engine-01 ovirt-engine-01.localdomain in both cases I get the same error...Any ideas how to fix this?

Abnormal behavior on the reinstalled host

Hello everyone, I need help again with a host that I have reinstalled l and I don't understand why it doesn't work well. I have managed to get the host status to UP. But I can't migrate MV to this host. Yes, I can start a VM on this host and I can migrate it to another but it can't go back if you want.
