External VMs automatically deleted when powered down

Hi, I have a pressing problem with oVirt, which is sadly languishing as a bug report (#1610917), so I thought I would also raise it here in case anyone else has experience of this and can suggest a workaround or, better yet, a solution to my problem :o) Simply put, the problem is this. I have oVirt 4.2.7 installed on a Cent-OS 7.5 server. It is also necessary, due to various factors, to run what oVirt terms "external VMs" on this server, i.e. ones not managed by oVirt but managed separately, e.g. via virt-manager or virsh. The problem is that once these VMs are shut down (e.g. within the VM or by a command from virt-manager), they are automatically deleted by oVirt some 15 seconds later. The bug report noted above has more details, but these VMs are not created as temporary VMs, and when running the older oVirt 4.1.x or 3.8.x versions, this didn't happen. Looking through the oVirt and libvirt logs, it is really clear that oVirt is responsible for deleting these VMs, so I can rule out any other nefarious agent! Does anyone know of a way of preventing oVirt from deleting external VMs, like a special config option or something? Or does anyone know how to mark a VM as "protected from deletion"? I know oVirt VMs have an option for "delete protection", but oVirt gives the error "Cannot edit VM. This VM is not managed by the engine." if you try to enable it on an external VM. VM stuck in paused mode with Cluster Compatibility Version 3.6 on 4.2 cluster

Hi, we upgraded ovirt from version 4.1 to 4.2.6. Rebooted all vms. We missed two vms that were at Cluster Compatibility Version 3.6. There was a gluster/network IO problem and vms got paused. We were able to recover all the other vms from the paused state but we have two vms that won't run because: "Cannot run VM. The Custom Compatibility Version of VM VM_NAME (3.6) is not supported in Data Center compatibility version 4.1." Can we force the CCV of the paused vm to 4.1? Regards, -- Marco Crociani

troubleshooting node upgrade failures

I have a very standard three node HCI setup running the latest version of oVirt 4.2. I've been having some problems updating hosts, the last update that was released a few weeks ago would produce installfailed when updating hosts. I was able to resolve this by rebooting the host first then performing the update. I eventually got all three hosts updated. Fast forward to this week, a new update is available. I've updated engine successfully but first host, I put in to maintenance then updated and the install is failing. I've rebooted it twice and attempted update again but no go this time. What logs should I be looking at to determine what is causing the node update failures?

Could not detect Guest Agent on the VM. Note that without a Guest Agent the data on the created snapshot may be inconsistent!

Hi evrybody! First of all sorry for my language. On windows machines despite the installation of oVirt Guest Tools4.2-4.el7 a warning is issued as in Title. My solucion: a) ovirt-engin DB update vdc_options set option_value='ovirt-guest-agent-common,ovirt-guest-agent,oVirtGuestTools' where option_name='AgentAppName'; b) windows VM Change DisplayName registry: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\oVirtGuestTools to oVirtGuestTools-4.2-4.el7. Restart OVirt Guest service

How to do per-datacenter/cluster permissions?

Hello! I'm evaluating oVirt for our company, and one thing we need to verify is that users only have access to virtual machines/clusters that they should have access to. I have the users set up from LDAP, and I added the UserRole to them, however it seems like they, by default, have access to every VM available. How do I go about limiting what VMs they have access to? I'd assume I'd have to limit access on a datacenter or cluster level, but I can't seem to find any documentation as to how to do this.
