Greetings users and developers, I'm developing a new feature "Affinity Rules Enforcement Service"; In summary, =========== If an anti-affinity policy is applied to VMs that are currently running on the same hypervisor, the engine will not automatically migrate one of them off once the policy is applied. The Affinity Rules Enforcement Service will periodically check that affinity rules are being enforced and will migrate VMs if necessary in order to comply with those rules. Gluster locking the DC

Hi, 1) FYI: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1217576 I will need some help from a Gluster expert to debug this issue, since I don't know Gluster internals. On a replica-3 cluster with best practices, it's very frustrating to see the whole DC going down because of a FS lock. 2) Should we at some point freeze gluster updates and stick to a stable version, or are we following new features required by oVirt? I feel Gluster very unstable yet, but maybe it's just me. I guess that if a "stat" operation (mount, lsof, etc) of a gluster volume is locking, it's the layer below sanlock, right? I don't think that sanlock should be able to lock Gluster, does it? 3) My feature request: Sanlock+Gluster unit-tests written by the sanlock authors to stress and exploit all Gluster weaknesses. Validation issue with IntegerEntityModelTextBoxEditor

Hi, We have a validation issue with IntegerEntityModelTextBoxEditor. It converts non numeric values as null to the model. As a result IntegerValidation.validate() will be success always even in case of non integer value. Any suggestion to fix this issue?. Regards, Ramesh

Annoucing the 1st oVirt infra hackathon - join the fun!

Hi to all dev & infra members of the oVirt project. As you know (or not :) , the infra team handles many resources and systems that supports the oVirt project. Some are visible like gerrit or jenkins, and some are in the background like puppet, foreman, data-centers maintenance, monitoring, jenkins job builder and many more.. As an effort to reduce open issues and tickets [1], we decided to do the 1st infra hackathon so we can join forces for a single concentrated day and try to resolve as many tickets as possible. We've created a Google sheet for it [2], so anyone from the community can volunteer and help out, even if he's not an infra member! This is also a great opportunity for new community members that wish to join the team or just get dirty with some "devops" tasks... Each task has a 'verifier' column which includes all infra members or people from the ovirt project who can assist with code review, help, verification. [3] If you see a task in [1] and feel like you'd want to take it on, feel free to add it to [2] if it's not there. Orphaning ovirt-node in Fedora

Hey, historically we maintained the ovirt-node package in Fedora. But due to the nature of ovirt-node the package is not directly usable in Fedora. To prevent an accidental use of the package and because there is no other value in maintaining it there, I plan to orphan this package in Fedora. Is anybody objecting to this? If not, then I'll orphan it in one week. We can always bring it back if it becomes necessary. but I do not see a reason why this should happen. Greetings fabian

vdsm: python3 support?

Vdsm depends on Python 2, but the developers of Python 2 wants us (and everybody else) to move to the slightly-different language of Python 3. There is a lot to be fixed for this to happen: - depency on libraries with no python3 port: - mom - cpopen - m2crypto - use of implicit relative imports, mostly in the storage package - use of renamed/moved functions, methods and modules (e.g. dict.iteritems, io.StringIO, itertools.izip) - use of contextlib.nested - unsafe unicode treatment - and probably much more... Fixing it all would take a long time, and may introduce regressions. We must perform it gradually. The very first step is to use syntax that is compatible with both languages, and make sure we do not regress on that front. The remaining bit is our usages of raise E, V, T statement, which has been dropped in PEP-3109. https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/40214/ suggests to replace it with six.reraise(), which adds a new run-time dependency to Vdsm. https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/40215/ adds an attempt to python3-compile all vdsm code, so that we do not introduce new python2-only code. Relocating the vdsm upgrade logic into a new or existing service at boot time

Hey, the logic which is run on vdsm upgrades is located in the specfile, and thus run when the rpm get's an update. This is fine as long as rpm is involved (like when rpm or yum or dnf is used), but it becomes - and already is - an issue for flows where the upgrade happens without rpm, like on oVirt Node. On oVirt Node the image for booting the host is getting replaced, we currently mimic the upgrade process of the specfile. But this error prone - we had a lot of bugs around this area (remember the problems with the hooks?), and we need to watch out for changes in the upgrade logic. To simplify and especially unify the logic between Node and normal hosts, I'd like to discuss if the upgrade logic can be moved to a separate service or included in one of the existsing services. The simplest approach to me would be top create a new service which is started before libvirtd and vdsmd/supervdsmd to run some logic if an upgrade of vdsm is detected. This habit - to do the upgrade logic during boot - is actually not new and systemd provides some helpers (ConditionNeedsUpdate=) around this to ease the implementation. Thoughts? There was some confusion the latter days regarding the fact that google sto= pped supporting openid 2.0, making it impossible to authenticate with a google account on the gerrit service, let me give you some guidance for those that still have the issue. You'll need another openid account anywhere else, fedora openid is cleaner = and easier to set up on gerrit but anything else can do. IMPORTANT: If you haven't logged in on gerrit with the new openid, don't do= it. If you did, don't review or comment any patches with it, use ssh [1] instea= d. =3D=3D=3D For fedora openid, if you haven't logged with it yet Send an email to infra at ovirt dot org with the fedora user and the old account email. We'll add it and you'll be good to go. =3D=3D=3D For any other provider or if you logged in with the new account If you did not yet, log into gerrit with the new account to create a new us= er. Then go to settings->account and send the account id shown there and the old account email to infra at ovirt dot org, log out and wait for ack on our si= de. This last method, might create duplicated accounts, if it did, send an emai= l to infra with the account duplicated email and we will fix it. We are working on getting the googole supported again, but the new protocol= is not yet supported officially by gerrit and requires potentially dangerous modifications. oVirt 3.6 new feature: NUMA aware KSM support

Greetings users and developers, Just put up a feature page for the "NUMA aware KSM support"; In summary, =========== The KSM service is optimizing shared memory pages across all NUMA nodes. The consequences is: a shared memory pages (controlled by KSM) to be read from many CPUs across NUMA nodes. Hence degrading (could totally eliminate) the NUMA performance gain. The optimal behavior is for KSM feature to optimize memory usage per NUMA nodes. This feature is implemented in KSM since RHEL 6.5. We want to introduce a new feature to oVirt that will allow host administrator to control NUMA aware KSM policy. JPA in oVirt

Hi After a very long development cycle, we have finally introduced CDI and JPA technologies into oVirt. This means that in the next few month you'll see more and more of our stored procedures replaced with JPA code, which will allow us to have easier entity mapping and enjoy performance boost with caching. Some things to keep in mind: 1. When implementing a DAO class, please make sure to annotate it with the @Named and @Singleton annotations. 2. The engine-daos.properties file is no longer needed, and is removed from our code. 3. If you want to migrate your own DAO to work with JPA, please look at the Bookmark, BookmarkDaoDbFacadeImpl and BookmarkDaoTest classes (see patch https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/33836/) There is a simple infrastructure that will allow you to do most of the things you need quite easily. Nir / Allon, We have an issue deploying hosted-engine (master) on a second CentOS 7 host, which fails because: /rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD/.../ha_agent/hosted-engine.metadata is a symlink to: /var/run/vdsm/storage/c54f691c-fc83-4a74-9c02-a68ef87e68b3/cf66539b-5aa2-41a4-a67b-2fe43e01d4f1/93b60c8c-9826-4e5b-86c3-e3fb9d3600af But /var/run/vdsm/storage doesn't exist. Hi all, I can't compile engine master, following message is printed Found duplicate upgrade scripts with version 03_06_1210, please resolve and retry make[1]: *** [validations] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/jakub/src/ovirt-engine' make: *** [all-dev] Error 2 It seems that command in dbscripts-duplicate_upgrade_scripts.sh OUT="$(find "$(dirname "$0")/../packaging/dbscripts" | grep -P '\d{2}_\d{2}_\d{2,8}' -o | sort | uniq -d)" is too dummy to handle '..._revert_03_06_1210_...' upgrade script name. Introducing ToStringBuilder

Hi, patch [1] introducing ToStringBuilder was merged to master a few days ago and hopefully additional fixes [2] for ToStringBuilder will be merged soon. ToStringBuilder is a helper class which eases implementation of toString() method, which usually contains a lot of class info for logging purposes. For example take a look at following class: public class Test { private boolean flag; private int number; private List<String> messages; private String password; ... } Using ToStringBuilder we can easily create toString() method: @Override public String toString() { return ToStringBuilder.forInstance(this) .append("flag", flag) .append("number", getNumber()) .append("message", getMessages) .appendFiltered("password", getPassword()) .build(); } Using this toString() method we will receive following output (assuming that attributes as filled in with values): Test:{flag='false', number='0', message='[msg1, msg2]', password='***'} For more information about ToStringBuilder please take a look at source code which is documented by JavaDoc. It would be great if we start to use this builder in engine code, so I created patch [3] which refactors existing relevant toString() methods to use ToStringBuilder. GlusterFS storage domain disappears while deploying hosted-engine

Sandro, Please take a look at BZ 1201355. In my last comment, I posted a solution to keep the storage and the hosted-engine VM alive during hosted-engine --deploy. We just need to move the glusterfs process out from the vdsmd.service cgroup, so the storage and VM are not killed during vdsmd restart. Please let me know when I can test a patched nightly build. I do not follow. 1. if you are using ntpd on hosts and hosts are in sync you can use distributed timestamps. detecting if host is synced can be done using either (based on what actually installed): ntpq -c rv | grep -q clock_sync && echo ok chronyc waitsync 1 && echo ok 2. you can also measure the time diff between hosts by clockdiff or similar process and avoid the need of ntpd deployed. 3. you may be able to calculate the time within in the handover is given to remote and eliminate the network time. vdsm hosts clock sync

Hi, I want to add a new feature that reports migration actual downtime (the time that the VM was inaccessible to the user). Libvirt reports that information but the vdsm hosts need to be in sync by clock time. I can measure the ping for NTP server an report back to the user if the ping is too long (more then ~100ms or so) - a way to do that is via ntpstat shell command. The NTP delay can be report back via vdsStats and can be performed every few hours or so. Anyone knows of a better way that we can sync between hosts? Thank you, Shahar Havivi.

Failing patch because of wrong documentation generation

hi all we have a failing jenkins job because of problematic patch: https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/39186/ 1) First of all there were no added package dependencies, that caused to job to fail on all platforms: http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/ovirt-engine-sdk_master_create-rpms_merged/212/ but this could be solved by my patch: https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/39569/ 2) Secondly, the python-sphinx module on el6 has a very early version with different command name for document generation and this causes to fail on el6: http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/ovirt-engine-sdk_master_create-rpms_merged/217/ So the patch should be reverted and rewritten and tested before it's merged on all platforms. Also you can see that nobody has reviewed this patch and this is a main root cause to such problems. This is always better to have the patch to be reviewed by anybody, otherwise it makes all Gerrit process completely useless and pushes problems forward instead of locating them on early stages. -- Thanks
