Error attaching cd iso image from data domain
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I'm with oVirt 4.2.3 (upgraded from 4.1 and compatibilities set to 4.2)
I have a CentOS 7 VM.
I correctly uploaded an iSO image to the disks of a data storage domain
(iSCSI).
Now in web admin portal I select the VM, then the 3 dots in top right, then
change cd
I'm proposed with the [Eject] line and into the dropdown I see the two iso
images I have uploaded up to now.
I select an image and then OK
I get a window with title "Operation canceled" and content
Error while executing action Change CD: Drive image file could not be found
Do I have to edit any setting in my VM to be able to connect an ISO image
this way?
Or other things to check?
In engine.log I have:

Ovirt node 4.2.1.1 patch/upgrade?
by Jakov Sosic
Hi guys,
how do you upgrade ovirt nodes? I can't figure out the best practice
from documentation.
If I try `Check for upgrades` from oVirt Hosted engine interface,
nothing happens.
If I run `yum update` on an ovirt node, I get offered the following:
```
Installing:
ovirt-node-ng-image-update noarch
4.2.3.1-1.el7 ovirt-4.2
643 M
replacing ovirt-node-ng-image-update-placeholder.noarch
4.2.1.1-1.el7.centos
```
I can access all the CentOS packages if I run `yum update
--enablerepos=base,updates,extras`.
So, what is the proper way to do it?
Thanks,
Jakov

Asking about snapshot concept
by Terry hey
Dear all,
I have a pre-allocated virtual machine.
When i created a snapshot for that virtual machine, i found that it became
thin-provision.
And the size of the snapshot is same as the virtual machine.
i would like to ask why these two behavior happened.
1. preallocated to thin provision
2. the size of snapshot is same as the disk size of virtual machine.

oVirt hosted-engine-setup issues with getting host facts
by Mariusz Kozakowski
Hello,
We've been trying to setup oVirt environment for few days but we have issue with hosted-engine-setup (ansible script).
We managed to fix few small things and have them merged upstream but unfortunately right now the installation process fails on getting host facts.
It looks like it cannot proceed because it fails when connecting to ovirt-engine API of the bootstrap VM.
The oVirt API / webpanel is working, I tested it via a browser and I can login without issues using the admin password chosen earlier in the process.

Debugging ceph access
by Bernhard Dick
Hi,
as you might already know I try to use ceph with openstack in an oVirt
test environment. I'm able to create and remove volumes. But if I try to
run a VM which contains a ceph volume it is in the "Wait for launch"
state for a very long time. Then it gets into "down" state again. The
qemu log states
2018-05-25T15:03:41.100401Z qemu-kvm: -drive
file=rbd:rbd/volume-3bec499e-d0d0-45ef-86ad-2c187cdb2811:id=cinder:auth_supported=cephx\;none:mon_host=[mon0]\:6789\;[mon1]\:6789,file.password-secret=scsi0-0-0-0-secret0,format=raw,if=none,id=drive-scsi0-0-0-0,serial=3bec499e-d0d0-45ef-86ad-2c187cdb2811,cache=none,werror=stop,rerror=stop,aio=threads:
error connecting: Connection timed out
2018-05-25 15:03:41.109+0000: shutting down, reason=failed
On the monitor hosts I see traffic with the ceph-mon-port, but not on
other ports (the osds for example). In the ceph logs however I don't
really see what happens.
Do you have some tips how to debug this problem?
Regards
Bernhard

the playbook runs successfully, but when I want to see the summary of vms using ovirt4.py, i do not see any devices attached, nor using curl api i see anything under reported_devices.
Is there something I am missing?

Backup VMs on oVirt 4.2+ with Disk image transfer
by wodel youchi
Hi,
I am testing a product that can interface with oVirt API to backup VMs.
The product can use v3 API (for oVirt 3.5.1+) with a proxy VM on oVirt to
backup the VMs to the Export domain.
And it can use v4 API (for oVirt 4+) to backup VMs, and it offers two
methods for that :
- for oVirt 4+ it can use Disk attachment mode, this mode uses a proxy
VM on oVirt to attach the snapshot of the VM to be backed-up, and then the
proxy VM can do the backup of the disk or communicate with an external
backup software. This mode offers only full backups (pretty similar to v3).
- for oVirt 4.2+ it can use Disk image transfer, this mode does not need
a proxy VM, it exports data directly using the oVirt 4.2+ API to the backup
server, and uses snapshot-chains provided by the new RHV/oVirt, which make
it possible to have incremental VMs backups.
I cannot get any documentation about the later approach (Disk image
transfer), and my question is : what network does this approach uses to
transfer the backup stream, is it ovirtmgmt network since we're talking to
the API?
My concern is about the bandwidth of this network, especially when
backing-up huge and multiple VMs.
Regards.

I've looked for it and I saw that ovirt-shell is already deprecated.

Hosted Engine Change State, VMs Images Locked?
by Dan Lavu
So I have a few VMs that are locked and unable to start on either
hypervisor, this happened after the hosted engine for some reason switched
hosts. It seems like the imaged is locked but I'm unsure how to unlock it.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Ovirt Node NG (4.2.3.1-0.20180530) Boot fail ISCSI using ibft after installation
by Ralf Schenk
Hello,
I successfully installed Ovirt Node NG from ISO to an ISCSI target
attached via first network interface by using following extensions to
the grub cmdline:
"rd.iscsi.ibft=1 ip=ibft ip=eno2:dhcp"
I want to use the server as diskless ovirt-node-ng Server.
After successful install the system reboots and starts up but it fails
later in dracut even having detected correctly the disk and all the LV's.
I think "iscsistart" is run multiple times even after already being
logged in to the ISCSI-Target and that fails finally like that:
*[ 147.644872] localhost dracut-initqueue[1075]: iscsistart: initiator

[ 147.825185] localhost systemd[1]: iscsistart_iscsi.service failed.
After a long timeout dracut drops to a shell.
I attach my shortended and cleaned rdsosreport.txt. Can someone help me
find a workaround ?
Bye

High latency events and events history settings
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I'm going to debug some spot events I have in my iSCSI connection frm
hypervisors.
Sometimes I get
May 31, 2018, 7:14:51 AM
Storage domain ovsd3750 experienced a high latency of 8.96043 seconds from
host ov200. This may cause performance and functional issues. Please
consult your Storage Administrator.
Jun 1, 2018, 5:26:25 AM
Storage domain ovsd3750 experienced a high latency of 8.26526 seconds from
host ov301. This may cause performance and functional issues. Please
consult your Storage Administrator.
Jun 2, 2018, 5:21:37 AM
VDSM ov200 command SpmStatusVDS failed: (-202, 'Sanlock resource read
failure', 'IO timeout')
--> it seems no impact, actually, after a few seconds it becomes again SPM
Jun 3, 2018, 7:00:14 AM
Storage domain ovsd3750 experienced a high latency of 6.37818 seconds from
host ov300. This may cause performance and functional issues. Please
consult your Storage Administrator.
And yesterday a VM running on ov301 node gets paused for a few seconds.
Jun 4, 2018, 7:02:26 AM
VM dbatest3 has been paused.
Jun 4, 2018, 7:02:26 AM
VM dbatest3 has been paused due to storage I/O problem.
Jun 4, 2018, 7:02:40 AM
VM dbatest3 has recovered from paused back to up.
Some questions:
- I'm investigating with the users, but in case it is indeed this VM
causing problems on storage latency, what are my best chance to avoid it?
To change disk profile for the disks of this particular VM? Or is there
anything I can do globally?
Or any settings on storage domain itself?
What best practice? Is there a default sort of top I/O consuming barrier
pre-defined on storage access speed from VMs?
- How many days is the default history for events and how I can see it from
web admin gui or other means? Can I change this dwfault and how?
It seems I only see this possibly related parameter with engine-config
command:
EventProcessingPoolSize
(with the value of 10 at this time)
?
Any pointer to configure events' history retained settings?
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca

Hi Etienne,
according to log it is https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1570388
which should be resolved in 4.2.3.
What is your engine version?

Microsoft Network Load Balancing
by Matthew Southwick
Any help appreciated.
I have tried any and all combinations of network filters, custom network settings on vNIC, custom "macspoof" settings on the VM's. I have read countless blogs and examples.
Could anyone please give me a simple list of items to check/change so that I can get windows network load balancing working between to VM's?
At present, I have a network vNIC profile set to "No Network Filter"
I have no custom properties on the virtual machines.
I have no Network Filter Parameters set on the virtual machine vNIC.

How to increase the total space of storage domain
by Pym
Hi:
In the management page of the web, the total space of the domain added to the storage domain page cannot specify a specific value.
The total space value is determined by a specific code function based on the configuration parameters of the physical machine, or is it a fixed value? Is there any way to modify this value?
After I create multiple virtual machines, this space is not enough to continue to create virtual machines. How can I solve this problem?
Thank you.

Is the engine 4.2.x is backwards compatible with 4.1.x?

Some what new to the VM and Ovirt world here and need some help understanding terminologies and get the VM to work as per requirement.
I have a self-hosted-engine (4.2) running on centos (7.4). The engine is in good health and I have deployed a test VM using below playbook successfully. It is currently in "up" state.

Above playbook runs fine, but when i see summary using ovirt4.py, i do not see ipaddr for this test vm.

Gluster problems, cluster performance issues
by Jim Kusznir
Hello:
I've been having some cluster and gluster performance issues lately. I
also found that my cluster was out of date, and was trying to apply updates
(hoping to fix some of these), and discovered the ovirt 4.1 repos were
taken completely offline. So, I was forced to begin an upgrade to 4.2.
According to docs I found/read, I needed only add the new repo, do a yum
update, reboot, and be good on my hosts (did the yum update, the
engine-setup on my hosted engine). Things seemed to work relatively well,
except for a gluster sync issue that showed up.
My cluster is a 3 node hyperconverged cluster. I upgraded the hosted
engine first, then engine 3. When engine 3 came back up, for some reason
one of my gluster volumes would not sync. Here's sample output:
[root@ovirt3 ~]# gluster volume heal data-hdd info

---------
Its been in this state for a couple days now, and bandwidth monitoring
shows no appreciable data moving. I've tried repeatedly commanding a full
heal from all three clusters in the node. Its always the same files that
need healing.
When running gluster volume heal data-hdd statistics, I see sometimes
different information, but always some number of "heal failed" entries. It
shows 0 for split brain.
I'm not quite sure what to do. I suspect it may be due to nodes 1 and 2
still being on the older ovirt/gluster release, but I'm afraid to upgrade
and reboot them until I have a good gluster sync (don't need to create a
split brain issue). How do I proceed with this?
Second issue: I've been experiencing VERY POOR performance on most of my
VMs. To the tune that logging into a windows 10 vm via remote desktop can
take 5 minutes, launching quickbooks inside said vm can easily take 10
minutes. On some linux VMs, I get random messages like this:
Message from syslogd@unifi at May 28 20:39:23 ...
kernel:[6171996.308904] NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for
22s! [mongod:14766]
(the process and PID are often different)
I'm not quite sure what to do about this either. My initial thought was
upgrad everything to current and see if its still there, but I cannot move
forward with that until my gluster is healed...
Thanks!

logical_name of virtual machine disk not seen in the ovirt engine
by Punaatua PK
Hello,
i used the vm_backup script as provide here : https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/blob/master/sdk/examples/vm_bac...
I understood the process to backup VM. I'm stuck at getting the logical_name of the disk when the snapshot disk is attached in a VM.
I checked the flow like this:
- The disk is attached on the VM
- oVirt guest agent detect the new disk and the mapping seen on the LOG (i did put those log in DEBUG in /etc/ovirt-guest-agent.conf), i also reduce the report_disk_usage to 10 to speed up the process
- VDSM on the host get the info from the ovirt guest agent seen by running the following command vdsm-client Host getVMFullList
- On the engine the logical_name is empty seen with the following sql request select device,type,device_id, logical_name from vm_device where type='disk' and vm_id='XXX';
ovirt-engine-4.2.3.5-1.el7.centos.noarch
vdsm-4.20.27.1-1.el7.centos.x86_64
ovirt-guest-agent-common-1.0.14-1.el7.noarch
Do you have an idea ? Is the information request by the engine to VDSM ? VDSM does report to the engine ? What is the flow to get the logical_name populated in the engine DB, python SDK ?
I can provide logs if needed. I juste don't know how to enable debug on VDSM (I will take a look for this)

Ovirt consulting
by Jonathan Del Campo
Hello,
I am looking for a specialized Ovirt partner in France in order to operate
a migration of our system from 3.x to 4.x.
Can someone recommend an Ovirt service partner to perform this kind of
operations ?
many thanks.

ovirt 4.2.3 console.vv provide IP addr, not FQHN for host= (spice connection)
by Oliver Riesener
Hi,
i recently upgraded to ovirt 4.2.3-[78] and noticed that the spice
client got and use
host=IPAddr
from received console.vv file and not
host=FQHN
of the virtualization host.
I need the FQHN because i access ovirt-webui remote via ssh with port
forwarding.
I added a "127.0.0.1 FQHN" entry in /etc/hosts on client side to access
remote ports.
Please could everyone provide a < 4.2.3 console.vv file ?
How can i change the behavior back to FQHN?
How can i re enable WebSocket Proxy ? It's permanent False in engine-setup?
Greetings

how to use oVirt engine API to retrieve the attached VM list by a disk id.
by iterjpnic
Hi all,
I use oVirt engine API v4.2 for implementing terraform oVirt provider. And I want to check if a Disk has been attached to a VM, so I need to find all vms attached by this disk.
But after I checked the GET-Response data from the "/ovirt-engine/api/disks/<disk-id>" rest url, there has no disk-attachment/vm related properties or links. I could get a trade-off, by the following steps:
1. getting all vms
2. get all disk-attachments of each vm
3. check if the given disk id equals to the `disk` property of each disk-attachment`
4. If equals, append the vm to result list
Is there any simpler and smarter way to get this? Thanks.
