Hello, I am hoping for some insight from folks with more hosted engine install experience. When I try to install the hosted engine using the RC5 dist I get the following error during the startup of the HostedEngine VM: XML error: The PCI controller with index='0' must be model='pci-root' for this machine type, but model='pcie-root' was found instead This is due to the HE Domain XML description using machine="pc-i440fx-rhel7.6.0". I've tried to override the default of 'pc' from ovirt-ansible-hosted-engine-setup/defaults/main.yml: he_emulated_machine: pc by passing to the ovirt-hosted-engine-setup script a --config-append=file parameter where file contains: [environment:default] OVEHOSTED_VM/emulatedMachine=str:q35 When the "Create ovirt-hosted-engine-ha run directory" step finishes the vm.conf file contains: cpuType=IvyBridge,+pcid,+spec-ctrl,+ssbd,+md-clear emulatedMachine=q35 At the "Start ovirt-ha-broker service on the host" step that file is removed. When that file appears again during the "Check engine VM health" step it now contains: cpuType=IvyBridge,+pcid,+spec-ctrl,+ssbd,+md-clear emulatedMachine=pc-i440fx-rhel7.6.0 After that the install fails with the metadata from "virsh dumpxml HostedEngine" containing: <ovirt-vm:exitCode type="int">1</ovirt-vm:exitCode> <ovirt-vm:exitMessage>XML error: The PCI controller with index='0' must be model='pci-root' for this machine type, but model='pcie-root' was found instead</ovirt-vm:exitMessage> Interestingly enough, the HostedEngineLocal VM that is running the appliance image has the value I need: <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-q35-rhel8.2.0'>hvm</type> Does anyone on the list have any experience with where this needs to be overridden? Somewhere in the hosted engine setup or do I need to do something at a deeper level like vdsm or libvirt? Help much appreciated ! Thanks, Glenn

vdsm error every hour

In the web ui I get an error about every hour: VDSM command SetVolumeDescriptionVDS failed: Volume does not exist: (u'e3f79840-8355-45b0-ad2b-440c877be637',) I looked in storage and disks and this disk does not exist. Its more of an annoyance than a problem but if there is way to get rid of this error I would like to know. My research says I can install vdsm-tools and vdsm-cli but vdsm-cli is not available and I really don;t want to install anything until I know it's what I need. Is there a vdsm command to purge a missing disk so this error won't show up? Thanks in advance. Eric

Error with Imported VM Run

I imported an orphaned Storage Domain into a new oVirt instance (4.4) and imported the VMs that were found in that storage domain. The SD was previously attached to, 4.2/4.3 instance of oVirt and I did not see any errors about the imports. However, when I attempt to run these VMs, I see this error in the engine.log: ERROR [org.ovirt.engine.core.dal.dbbroker.auditloghandling.AuditLogDirector] (EE-ManagedThreadFactory-engine-Thread-51848) [d56a3ce0-7139-4173-bcdb-d5bd4d9378fa] EVENT_ID: USER_FAILED_RUN_VM(54), Failed to run VM mtl-portal-01 (User: admin@internal-authz). As best as I can tell, this is a vdsm version issue... So what are my options to resolve this? Should I go through the steps to build out an older oVirt release and then attach the SD to that instance and work through the migration? Can I manually update the VM to work with the newer vdsm version? *Thank you,* *Ian Easter*

Hi all, does anybody know whether NVMe-over-Fabrics support is somehow scheduled in oVirt? As, from a logical point of view, it is like iSCSI on steroids, I guess it shouldn't be too hard to implement it. Yep, I know, bold statement from someone who isn't a programmer. ;-) Nonetheless: Are there plans to implement NVMe-oF as storage backend for oVirt in the near future? If so: Is there a way to help (i.e. with hardware ressources)? engine failure

The last update for 4.3 has caused my engine server to fail. I cannot find the original repos for the 4.3 install that work with out missing dependencies. I am using Centos 7 that is up to date. Can someone forward the URL for 4.3.10.1 repo installs or info so I can reinstall and hopefully restore my stand alone engine? My vm's are still running but I cannot manage anything . Please help and it is appreciated.

Does a slow Web proxy (can't run the update-check) ruin HA scores? (Solved, ...but really?)

Running a couple of oVirt clusters on left-over hardware in an R&D niche of the data center. Lots of switches/proxies still at 100Mbit and just checking for updates via 'yum update' can take awhile, even time out 2 times of out 3. The network between the nodes is 10Gbit though, faster than any other part of the hardware, including some SSDs and RAIDs: Cluster communication should be excellent, even if everything goes through a single port. After moving some servers to a new IP range, where there are even more hops to the proxy, I am shocked to see the three HCI nodes in one cluster almost permanently report bad HA scores, which of course becomes a real issue, when it hits all three. The entire cluster really starts to 'wobble'.... Trying to find the reason for that bad score and there is nothing obvious: Machines have been running just fine, very light loads, no downtimes, reboots etc. But looking at the events recorded on hosts, something like "Failed to check for available updates on host <name> with message 'Failed to run check-update of host '<host>'. Error: null'." does come up pretty often. Moreover, when I then have all three servers run the update check on the GUI, I can find myself locked-out of the oVirt GUI and once I get back in, all non-active HostedEngine hosts are suddenly back in the 'low HS score' state. So I have this inkling impression, that the ability (or not) to run the update check is counting into the HA score, which ... IMHO would be quite mad. It would have production clusters go haywire, just because an external internet connection is interrupted... Any feedback on this? P.S. Only minutes later, after noticing the ha-scores reported by hosted-engine --vm-status were really in the low 2000s range overall, I did a quick Google and found this: ovirt-ha-agent - host score penaltieshttps://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/blob/master/ovirt_… NOTE: These values must be the same for all hosts in the HA cluster!base-score=3400 gateway-score-penalty=1600 not-uptodate-config-penalty=1000 //not 'knowing if there are updates' is not the same as 'knowing it missing critical patches' mgmt-bridge-score-penalty=600 free-memory-score-penalty=400 cpu-load-score-penalty=1000 engine-retry-score-penalty=50 cpu-load-penalty-min=0.4 cpu-load-penalty-max=0.9 So now I know how to fix it for me, but I'd consider this pretty much a bug: When the update check fails, that implies really only that the update check could not go through. It doesn't mean the cluster is fundamentally unhealthy. Now I understand how that negative feedback is next to impossible inside RedHat's network, where update servers are local. But having a cluster HA score being based on something 'just now happening' on the other far edges of the Internet... seems a very bad design decision. Please comment and/or tell me how and where I should file this as a bug.

NFS import storage domain permissions error

Hi All, I've got an error when I try to import a storage domain from a Synology NAS that used to be a 4.3.10 oVirt installation but no matter what I try I can't get it to import. Had a look at the source of vdsm/storage/* but I'm not a python programmer. A couple of other 4.4 oVirt installs don't have this problem and I used the same usb stick with Centos-8.2 for those as for this one. Followed the same install instructions, same versions of packages as far as I can see. Beats me I'm tempted to reinstall Centos7 and oVirt4.3.10 just to see what happens, but I'm hoping someone can point me to something that I must have overlooked. Regards, Joop

How to suspend a stateless VM

Currently from the ovirt web interface it is not possible to suspend a stateless VM. However I have a need for it for example when I want to free idle VM (or migrate them to a different cluster) and still not lose the current status of the VM. Thanks

How to change the hosted engine configuration manually?

After an update in the cluster configuration, the hosted engine ended up with an invalid configuration (bios x machine type) and it's not coming up. I need to return the bios to legacy mode, but I'm not finding a way to correct the xml generated to turn the machine back on. The storage domain is iSCSI. Any help would be appreciate. (reinstall isn't an option).

ovirt-provider-ovn syncrhonisation

Hi - during the last reboot all my ovn networks appeared in oVirt but weren't reflected on the physical host, no VMs would boot that had an OVN network attached. I was looking at my logs and I can see the following - Failed to synchronize networks of Provider ovirt-provider-ovn. Networks of Provider ovirt-provider-ovn were successfully synchronized. There was an issue with this host/engine where they lost connection which explains the Failed to Sync. The problem is it's since all been rebooted and it doesn't look like the ovirt-provider-ovn has tried to sync since, as I understand it, it should sync every 5 minutes? Is it just a case that successful syncs aren't always report in the events log? I've checked my timing properties for sync of external providers and all seems correct. So now I'm worried another reboot will result in losing all the ovn networks I've created through oVirt again! Also worth noting AutoSync is turned on for the provider.

VDSM can't see StoragePool

I have a Self-hosted Engine running on iSCSI as well as couple of Storage domains using iSCSI, both the SE and those Storage Domains uses the same target portals (two). I can see the iSCSI sessions and multipath working well from the Host point of view. Yesterday after doing a restart for the “ovirt-engine” all the hosts besides the one that runs the SE and the SPM went into “Unassigned” mode with an error stating the ovirt-engine can’t communicate with the hosts. Network wise, everything is good, I can reach all the ports, all the network is well configured, so I ruled this. Looking at the VDSM logs on those “Unassigned” hosts it looks like the VDSM can’t find the Storage Pool. (vmrecovery) [vdsm.api] START getConnectedStoragePoolsList(options=None) from=internal, task_id=217ec32b-591c-4376-8dc0-8d62200557ee (api:48) (vmrecovery) [vdsm.api] FINISH getConnectedStoragePoolsList return={'poollist': []} from=internal, task_id=217ec32b-591c-4376-8dc0-8d62200557ee (api:54) (vmrecovery) [vds] recovery: waiting for storage pool to go up (clientIF:723) If I look at the VDSM logs on the host where the SE and SPM is running, no issues there and the node appears up (green) in the ovirt-engine UI. I managed to set the hosted-engine to maintenance, shut it down and then start it again on another Host, when it starts on that Host, the host goes “green” and if the SPM stays on the previous host, I have two hosts working and the rest remains “Unassigned”. All the “ovirt-ha-agent”/”ovirt-ha-broker” services seems ok, I restarted them, I also tried to restart the VDSM on the hosts with no luck. I have the VMs still running, I did shutdown one host (even used the “SSH restart” from the WebUI) to see if that helps, it came back and still went into “Unassigned”. It seems like the hosts can’t see the Storage pool. Where should I start to troubleshoot this? Thanks

oVirt Engine UI error: changing Storage Domain mount options

Hi, I want to change the mount options to a Storage Domain that is already in use, but got an error from the Ovirt Engine's UI, and the mount point option change isn't getting applied. What I tried: 1. Shutdown all VMs using Disks on Volume 2. Stopped storage Volume 3. Put storage Domain into Maintenance (so Storage -> Data Center -> select Domain -> Maintenance button) 4. Entered mount point options via Storage -> Domain -> select Domain -> Managed Domain -> "Mount Options" field 5. A pop-up in UI had same exact error as a Bug that had been fixed (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1273941) 6. Confirmed the "Mount Options" field had _actually_ kept my new mount point option! 6. Took Domain out of Maintenance 7. Started Volume 8. Checked oVirt Nodes mount point on CLI but my new option isn't listed Is there a way I can change the mount point options via CLI? To get around this UI Bug ...

vm_service.stop in python sdk

One of the example scripts at https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/tree/master/sdk/examples is the stop_vm.py. I am trying to use that to stop a vm however, I am finding that what its doing is similar to pulling the power cord rather then running a shutdown -h now on the system. Is that correct? Is there a nicer way to shutdown the VM in the python sdk? Ovirt SYSTEM user does not allow deletion of VM networks

Hi oVirt Land Hope you are all well and that you can help me. I build a centos 8.2 vm on my local Fedora 32 qemu/kvm laptop. Then I ssh to my ovirt host in the following manner: ssh ovirthost -R 16666:localhost:16509. I can then view the vm's on my local laptop with the following configuration string: qemu+tcp://localhost:16666/system. Eveything goes according to plan until I hit the import button. It fails almost immediately. I even tried it on the command line and this is what I get, it also error immediately: virt-v2v -ic qemu+tcp://localhost:16666/system -o libvirt -os SOME_STORAGE centos8_ovirt virt-v2v: warning: no support for remote libvirt connections to '-ic qemu+tcp://localhost:16666/system'. The conversion may fail when it tries to read the source disks. Hosted engine deployment fails consistently when trying to download files.

Hello, I'm trying to deploy a hosted engine on one of my test setups. No matter how I tried to deploy the hosted engine, either via command line or via "Hosted Engine" deployment from the cockpit web console, I always fails with the same error message. [1] Manually trying to download RPMs via dnf from the host, work just fine. Firewall log files are clean. Any idea what's going on? Anton,I managed to re-create the issue on my local environment. Previously I tested it against Keycloak 8.0.1 with users loaded from LDAP. Currently I have users/groups created via Keycloak management panel. cloud-init settings entered into Hosted Engine are reverting after reboot, so what's the correct workflow for using the UI form? I'd like a workflow where I can: 1. start with Template (covers most settings) 2. create VM 3. use cloud-init in the UI (for a few settings, like static IP) 4. start/reboot VM and have cloud-init settings stick How is the above possible?

Hello Team, When i try to change Cluster compatible version HE it throws error As Error while executing action: HostedEngine: - There was an attempt to change Hosted Engine VM values that are locked. I am trying to change the version to 4.4 it was showing blank. Any suggestions on how I can edit. The VM other than HE is able to editi. *Ritesh*

It's the client's browser settings , but I think it's easier to either change the certificate to something that will be trusted, or to just import it. Hi All, So I managed to get the noVNC console to work. Multiple Gluster ACL issues with oVirt

Hello Sahina, Sandro, I have noticed that the ACL issue with Gluster (https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/issues/876) is happening to multiple oVirt users (so far at least 5) and I think that this issue needs greater attention. Adding iSCSI Target IP Address to Existing Storage Data Domain

Hi! Do you have suggestions if we can add a new iSCSI target IP address to an existing Storage Data Domain? Earlier, we had an issue where the storage device unexpectedly rebooted. It has 3 IP addresses used for iSCSI connections. For oVirt, we're connected to that storage device using 1 iSCSI Target IP address. The problem is that the adapters are down for that IP. What we're trying to do is to add the other IP addresses to connect to the LUNs/devices. Do you think simply logging in to the target will help? I've checked on previous threads and it was suggested that the storage data domain should be detached first then re-add using the new IP address. Thank you very much

KeyCloak Integration

Hi Everybody, So I have implemented KeyCloak into our oVirt environment, which works, up until a point. So WebUI access works, but when calling the API, using: curl -k -H "Accept: application/json" 'https://virt.example.co.za/ovirt-engine/sso/oauth/token?grant_type=password…' I get the below error: {"error_description":"Cannot authenticate user Invalid scopes: ovirt-app-api ovirt-ext=revoke:revoke-all ovirt-ext=token-info:authz-search ovirt-ext=token-info:public-authz-search ovirt-ext=token-info:validate ovirt-ext=token:password-access.","error":"access_denied"} If my configs are removed, and I use "admin@internal" for my username, then it works. Update to Ovirt 4.3.10-4-1 causes XFS issue

Hi All I think I have come across this bug: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/5075561 Updating Ovirt to 4.3.10 shows that the kernel installed on the hosts is the version that has the issue: 3.10.0-1127.8.2.el7.x86_64 The RedHat article suggests updating to kernel-3.10.0-1127.10.1.el7 but running engine-upgrade-check now shows no updates available from my engine manager. Is this something I can fix myself or would the updated kernel be available? Appreciate the advice as new to Ovirt. Normally I would point the hosts to the new kernel but I think it should be updated through Ovirt manager, correct? Thanks! Chaz

Host has time-drift of xxx seconds

Hello All, I have a strange error that should be fixed but the event log is still filling with the following after the latest patching (4.3.10): Host ovirt2.localdomain has time-drift of 2909848 seconds while maximum configured value is 300 seconds. Host ovirt3.localdomain has time-drift of 2909848 seconds while maximum configured value is 300 seconds. As it blamed only 2 out of 3 systems, I checked what has happened on ovirt1 and that one was far behind the other servers. Once I fixed the issue, I kept receiving those errors despite tthe fact that I fixed the time drift on ovirt1 several days ago. Currently the hosts and the engine are OK, but I got no idea how to 'fix' the issue. I have also noticed that the 2 errors had a date of 2 PM which is not possible with my current timezone. Issues with Gluster Domain

Hello, I recently added 6 hosts to an existing oVirt compute/gluster cluster. Prior to this attempted addition, my cluster had 3 Hypervisor hosts and 3 gluster bricks which made up a single gluster volume (replica 3 volume) . I added the additional hosts and made a brick on 3 of the new hosts and attempted to make a new replica 3 volume. I had difficulty creating the new volume. So, I decided that I would make a new compute/gluster cluster for each set of 3 new hosts. I removed the 6 new hosts from the existing oVirt Compute/Gluster Cluster leaving the 3 original hosts in place with their bricks. At that point my original bricks went down and came back up . The volume showed entries that needed healing. At that point I ran gluster volume heal images3 full, etc. The volume shows no unhealed entries. I also corrected some peer errors. However, I am unable to copy disks, move disks to another domain, export disks, etc. It appears that the engine cannot locate disks properly and I get storage I/O errors. I have detached and removed the oVirt Storage Domain. I reimported the domain and imported 2 VMs, But the VM disks exhibit the same behaviour and won't run from the hard disk. So I think I have narrowed it down to the OVN settings. The only problem now is, is that when I want to update the OVN settings, it fails with “Failed to communicate with External Provider. See logs for details” When checking the logs, I see an error stating the “root hostname does not match” (In the OVN settings via the WebUI, I see that it also points to the old hostname) A bit of background on this, when the engine was initially built, it was configured with a different hostname, which was then changed, but somehow it is still referencing the old hostname. When I run the change hostname scripts (/usr/share/ovirt-engine/setup/bin/ovirt-engine-rename) it runs through everything, until it needs to modify the certs. (I have attached the screenshot) I am really not sure where to go from here, and I believe that most of this has to do with the certs (And I am just grasping at straws here) I am starting to think that it would just be easier to deploy everything from scratch, but if anybody has any ideas, I would appreciate it. Hi All, A new issue 😊 We have configured oVirt to use KeyCloak for authentication. This all works, I can log into the WebUI etc, but as soon as I need to talk to the API, it gives me the “invalid scopes” error. I have double checked KeyCloak, and the scopes are added. I went through the logs, but there is nothing telling me exactly what the actual cause is.
