VM hanging at sustained high throughput

Hi ovirt gurus, This is an interesting issue, one I never expected to have. When I push high volumes of writes to my NAS, I will cause VM's to go into a paused state. I'm looking at this from a number of angles, including upgrades on the NAS appliance. I can reproduce this problem at will running a centos 7.9 VM on Ovirt 4.5. *Questions:* 1. Is my analysis of the failure (below) reasonable/correct? 2. What am I looking for to validate this? 3. Is there a configuration that I can set to make it a little more robust while I acquire the hardware to improve the NAS? *Reproduction:* Standard test of file write speed: [root@cen-79-pgsql-01 ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=./test bs=512k count=4096 oflag=direct 4096+0 records in 4096+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 1.68431 s, 1.3 GB/s Give it more data [root@cen-79-pgsql-01 ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=./test bs=512k count=12228 oflag=direct 12228+0 records in 12228+0 records out 6410993664 bytes (6.4 GB) copied, 7.22078 s, 888 MB/s The odds are about 50/50 that 6 GB will kill the VM, but 100% when I hit 8 GB. *Analysis:* What I think appears to be happening is that the intent cache on the NAS is on an SSD, and my VM's are pushing data about three times as fast as the SSD can handle. When the SSD gets queued up beyond a certain point, the NAS (which places reliability over speed) says "Whoah Nellie!", and the VM chokes. *David Johnson*

It seems the images I was given by the company are not working with OVIRT. OVA Import failed over GUI, the KVM Raw images failed to boot. I was able to take the ova though and convert it to a qcow image through the CLI and upload it to the GUI Disk page and attach it to my VM, that is when it actually showed a 150GB HDD with a 3GB actual size and it booted up. As long as you keep inside the NUMA limits you should be OK.For example:1 core , 2 threads is equal to 2 cores, 1 thread eachAfter all, all VMs in KVM are just processes. Yet, if your server has 2 CPUs each with 6 cores ( 2 threads per core ) ,you should avoid setting VMs with 13 vCPUs (13 real threads) as you will have to use some of the threads on the second CPU. i think there is a guide for High Performance VMs where NUMA cases are described quite well. Give direct internet access to Redhat RHVM/Ovirt Vms from an AWS bare metal host

Hi, I’ve set up a *RHVM/Ovirt* host on AWS using a bare metal instance. Everything is working but now I would like to give a direct internet access to VMs created inside this host. Actually those VMs get to internet through a ssh forwarded squid proxy. I can’t find the way to set that direct internet access for underlying VMs. Please can one here advise or give me any good doc link? GlusterFS poor performance

Hi all, I'm running a glusterFS setup v 8.6 with two node and one arbiter. Both nodes and arbiter are CentOS 8 Stream with oVirt 4.4. Under gluster I have a LVM thin partition. Hi, Given the fact that there is the option to match de CPUs physical topology (Socket / Core / Threads) , I guess it can make a difference. When ? Linux vs Windows ? (One example I know is that Windows 10 won't access more than 4 sockets.)

Hosted Engine deployment looks stuck in startup during the deployment

Hi, I'm using an aws ec2 bare metal install to deploy RHV-M in order to create and test NVidia GPU VMs. I'm trying to deploy a self hosted engine version 4.4. I've setup everything till the hosted-engine deployment and Hosted Engine deployment looks like stuck at engine host startup, and times out many more hours after. I'm suspecting networking startup issue but can really and clearly identify the issue. Because during all this time the deployment process is waiting for the hosted engine to come up before it finishes, the hosted engine itself is up and running, is still running till now, but is not reachable. Here attached you will find : - A screenshot before the timeout - A screenshot after the timeout (fail) - The answer file I appended to the hosted-engine command > hosted-engine --deploy --4 --config-append=hosted-engine.conf - The deployment log output - The resulting answer file after the deployment. I think the problem would I think the problem would at the network startup step but as I don't have any explicit error/failure message, I can't tell. Please can someone here advise? Upgrade Hosted Ovirt 4.3 to 4.4 fails in Initialize lockspace volume

New virtual machine default properties

Hello, We are currently using oVirt version 4.3.10.4-1.0.22.el7. When we click on create new VM, the OS is selected as "other OS" and "optimized for" is desktop. I'm creating the VMs from Ansible. The problem is that the "video type" is defaulting to QXL due to which the VM is failing to start with an error " Exit message: unsupported configuration: this QEMU does not support 'qxl' video device." It used to default to VGA earlier because this playbook was working earlier. So I'm guessing some config would've been changed which is causing this. But I was not able to find where this default config is set. Can you please help? I checked to see if I can set it in the Ansible playbook. But Ansible's ovirt_vm module only provides headless_mode and protocol options. It would be nice if it provided the video type parameter as well. Is there any config file in the engine that I can tweak to set the default values for a new VM creation? Regards, Ravi

Multiple dependencies unresolved

Dear all, lately the engine started notifying me about some "errors": "Failed to check for available updates on host XYZ with message 'Task Ensure Python3 is installed for CentOS/RHEL8 hosts failed to execute. Please check logs for more details" I do understand this is not something that can impact my cluster stability, since it's only a matter of checking updates, anyway it annoys me a lot. I checked the logs and apparently the issue is related to some repos that are missing/unresolved. Does memory ballooning works if memory overcommit is disabled in the cluster

Hi All, We have one ovirt 4.4 environment running. In Cluster Optimization settings we have checked "None - Disable memory overcommit" Option in Memory Optimization. But Memory Balloon check box option is enabled. My understanding is that Ballooning only works when memory overcommit is enabled. If it is true then this check box should be disabled when we are not overcommitting memory. Or Still memory ballooning works even if we disabled memory overcommit. CPU compatibility issues

Dear ovirt community, my cluster cpu type is "Intel Skylake Server Family" . I have 3 hosts with "Xeon Silver 4114" and 1 host with "Xeon Gold 5118", everything works ok. I try to add a new host with "Xeon Silver 4314" now. But it failed. error log: Host ovirt7 moved to Non-Operational state as host does not meet the cluster's minimum CPU level. Missing CPU features : model_Skylake-Server. How can I add the new host to cluster? Thanks.

Unable to access internet after installing ovirt 4.4.10

I recently installed ovirt on my server that has four/4 network adapters. I recently installed ovirt on the server successfully; however; after the installation I've not been able to access the internet from the server. I have cockpit installed and I see that "ovirtmgmt" has taken control of the first network adapter. I three/3 remaining adapters left so I liked to just access the internet using one or all of the remaining network adapters. I can see using cockpit that there is a little receiving traffic taken place but no sending traffic. How do I get internet traffic going on one of the remaining network adapters? Could this be firewall issue? Thanks

But when I try to boot the vm I obtain this error: booting from dvd/cd... boot failed: could not read from cdrom (code 0005) no bootable device Forum Solution: Find the location of the ISO image in the storage domain (search for the UUID in the file system) and re-copy the ISO over the top of the file. Just be 100% sure it's the ISO and not a VM disk (reference modification time, size etc). Once you replace the "uploaded" file with the ISO directly, everything works as expected. Kindly share detail steps on how to upload ISO image directly to Storage domain with UUID

Correct method to upload ISOs

As ISO domains are deprecated, what's the correct/modern procedure to upload ISOs to install / boot from? When I upload them to a data domain, they get converted into QCOW2 images (as confirmed by qemu-img info), but attached like ISOs to the qemu process. This means the VMs won't boot, until I manually overwrite the disk image on the datastore with the ISO directly (which works fine). My cluster started on 4.4 just after release, and is fully updated, if that changes things. Cheers, Nathaniel

Hello everybody, last night my backup script was not able to finish the backup from a VM in the last step of deleting the snapshot. I am researching how to contribute to the oVirt community. I started here: https://www.ovirt.org/community/ And, I immediately saw to sign up for this email address and...send us an email saying how you would like to contribute. Visit our[mailing lists](https://lists.ovirt.org/archives/)page for other oVirt mailing lists to sign up for. My answers are: I want to be useful (and give more than I take). I can answer questions on mailing lists, help troubleshoot, write ovirt.ovirt Ansible collections, roles and custom modules. I am a seasoned Python programmer. My background: - Python programmer for 10+ years - I write custom Ansible modules, roles, playbook, etc. - Previous DBA for Informix (highly certified but who has heard of informix anymore). Postgres and Informix are cousins (both offspring from Ingres) - I have *some* rudimentary knowledge of Virtualization. However, I'm far from an expert - One of my favorite OS's is Qubes (an OS of virtual machines really) - I do a lot of technical training (writing materials and facilitating classes) - I work in an SRE / SysAd role at a large company that puts music in peoples ears (I'm hoping to move some of this from less SysAd and more SRE when with some of this oVirt stuff we're working on). My intermediate skills - I have bought a book on libvirt. But, it's still on my backlog. It feels that I'm always sucking an ocean through a straw so I have to pick and choose what I read next - My second favorite OS is Ubuntu as my main desktop (Qubes on separate computer for more secure stuff -- like crypto) - I'm just starting to use Virtual Machine Manager to run other OSs on Ubuntu My Oh-I-have-No-Idea skills: - things like luns, iSCSI and the `vdsm-tool config-lvm-filter` are making me pull my hair out. This is the reason I was frustrated enough to say "Let me join this community so I can learn more how this architecture works." - I work for a large company that has a RedHat support contract. We use RHV. I just wrote up this long descriptive case of the problem, uploaded sosreports, added as much detail as I could. But, it's crickets. Manually rescanning the scsi hosts is for new disks.The previous example 'echo 1 > .../rescan' should do the trick. Can we have the 'lsblk' & 'lsscsi' output ?
