HI! There is an oVirt 4.1 self-hosted engine cluster of two hosts and a storage connected via iscsi. When trying to add another host, it gives an error: "ERROR otopi.context context._executeMethod:151 Failed to execute stage 'Setup validation': Cannot locate vdsm package, possible cause is incorrect channels". Older hosts on Centos 7.5.1804, last on Centos 7.9.2009. Is it possible to go from 4.1 to 4.4 using the third host as the main one for the transfer?

Cant add vm network with vlan to bonded interface

Hello, I am new to ovirt and try to migrate my companies vmware infra to ovirt. The Engine setup went fine without any problems. These are the steps which I am doing and having problems. 1. Prepare the KVM host by installing the RPM's. 2. Add the kvm host to the engine. Everything is working fine at this point. 3. I am creating a new Network for vm usage named VLAN10. And I am tagging the network with vlan id 10. 4. I am bonding two 25Gb/s interface's with balance-xor mode with the name bond1. 5. When I add the network VLAN10 to the bond1 interface I cant see the logical network assigned to the bond. After this step I am not able to delete the bond since I am getting errors when I try to delete the bond. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Right Glusterfs Config on HA Server

Hi Guys or Girls, I have a problem in a productive system. We use three Servers which have a Raid 5 with four Harddrives SATA 8 TB 7200 rpms. The Systems are interconnected for glusterfs with 1 GB/s. The Network Load between all three servers are between 5 and 8 % of the network. The Glusterfs has a separate VLAN which compltete isolated from other networks. Find attached a small drawing. On that server we rum as HA and there are 8 VMs installed. Most of the VMs working well but if there is high load on the system some of the VM can't write the Data in a "good" speed on the disks. The Glusterfs is configured as Replica on the Raid5 disk which is as Jbob in Glusterfs defiend. If i take a look on the iostats i can see that the Harddisk have round 50 open connections some of the glusterfs and a lot of the vms. In side the VMs i can see long iowaiting times from 300 up to 600 ms. With is on case of a Posgresql database very long. Should we configure the Raid5 controller out that the controller only should 4 disks with 8 TB and Glusterfs should connect directly to the /dev/sd[b-e]? What do you think? Will SSD HDD will help on performance but the same config with Raid5 and Jbod could be the bigger problem. Thanks Marcel

oVirt Node install with Foreman VG issue

Hi All, I have a server with a RAID1 disk for sda and RAID 5 disk for sdb. Following default install, prior to Cockpit Gluster and Engine wizards there is only a single Volume Group which doesn’t allow me to continue. If I manually configure the install and deselect sdb it gives other issues with multipath but at least I can resolve those. Is there a specific kickstart confuguration that should be used? Thanks Strahil, Unfortunately changing the filter is done after the initial install. We manually partition sda so that sdb isn’t touched during install. The issues with multipath grabbing sdb are ongoing with a possible manual fix being tested now. Testing has paused at the moment as we have lost gluster on the arbiter node as per https://lists.ovirt.org/archives/list/users@ovirt.org/thread/U64MGWSUCFJRIV… which looks like a full oVirt rebuild again. Add single node to running gluster cluster

Reinstalled Host 4.4.4 bricks failing to start

3 Node HCI - Local Storage Replica 2+1 After changing the Cluster 'Default Network Provider' from ovirt-provider-ovn to 'No Default Provider' notification (as expected) to reinstall was flagged against each host. Host 3 (Arbiter) was reinstalled but failed to Activate due to Gluster Bricks not starting. No GlusterFS process for the bricks is listed when checking Status of glusterd. Please can someone help to identify the issue and resolution. Attempted further reinstallation of the Host fails. Kind Regards Shimme

oVirt fails to update OVF

Hi everybody, we are running an oVirt 4.3.10 production cluster with 9 hosts and 5 datastore domains. Since yesterday we get error messages 26.02.2021 02:00:48 VDSM command SetVolumeDescriptionVDS failed: Could not acquire resource. Probably resource factory threw an exception.: () 26.02.2021 02:00:48 Failed to update OVF disks 5aa438e3-8d22-4b6c-bccf-a843151ca0be, OVF data isn't updated on those OVF stores (Data Center datacenter01, Storage Domain vmstore13). 26.02.2021 02:00:48 Failed to update VMs/Templates OVF data for Storage Domain vmstore13 in Data Center datacenter01. every hour. Only one domain (vmstore13) is affected, this domain is (like 3 others in the cluster) based on glusterfs. Trying to update the OVF's manually from the engine web-gui leads to the same result followed by (a misleading) 26.02.2021 02:00:49 OVF_STORE for domain vmstore13 was updated by admin@internal-authz. The vm's with discs on the affected domain are running fine, snapshots are working. So far I have tried to move the SPM role to another host. This succeeded, but the error messages persist. oVirt 4.2 cluster upgrade

I have a 3 node oVirt 4.2.1 cluster, i'm using a self-hosted engine architecture and storage-engine is on a glusterfs replica 3 of the cluster. The oldest CPU is SandyBridge family (E5-2609) and incidentally I have connectivity problems with IPMI NIC of one node, but Hosted Engine HA is enabled and working. Is it safe to upgrade to the last oVirt 4.4 without a down of vm running on the cluster? May I just click on the button Upgrade that appears on the host page?

I have an oVirt 4.3 to 4.4 engine upgrade upcoming, so I decided to start reading up on the procedure at https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/upgrade_guide/#SHE_Upgrading_from_4-3 I'm stuck at "4.2 Analyzing the environment" which says to install some RPM that isn't found and the closest sounding "ovirt-log-collector" doesn't seem to have the --live option as used there. yum install rhv-log-collector-analyzer

Starting a defined VM on a different host

Hi, I might be missing something here, but I'm looking for the right API way to start a defined VM on a different host. The scenario is this: 1. VM is running under Cluster Affinity Host. and there is a need to cold migrate it to another host on that Affinity. 2. for that I will stop the VM. 3. And now I would like to start the VM on another host, I tried few ways like: vm_service.start( vm=types.Vm( host=types.Host( name='<host name>' ), ) ) But VM keep starting on the current host. Python SDK - get host VM is running on.

I am having some issues figuring out how to get a list of VMs and the host that they are running on. I seem to be able to get a reference to the host object, but can't see how to print the name of the host. Q35: disk type view not consistent in edit vm and new disk pages

Hello, if I create a VM and select Q35 machine type, still the General --> create image option in edit phase doesn't show sata as an option. Even if I create the VM without disks and then go to edit General --> create, I only see IDE, VirtIO-SCSI and VirtIO. Instead if I click VM name, DIsks --> New, I can select VirtIO-SCSI, VirtIO and SATA After the first disk (SATA in my case) has been created, now if I go and edit VM --> General --> Instance Images + --> Create, I see consistent options. I think GUI experience could be improved. Also because I can reproduce this workflow converging to an error (even if IDE disks are not so common nowadays...): New VM In general I create an IDE disk In System I select in Advanced parameters, Custom Chipset/Firmware Type Q35 (EFI or BIOS based) go ahead At the final OK I get the error: Cannot add Virtual Disk: The disk interface is not supported by the VM OS: Other OS. The result is VM created but without the IDE disk as not supported in Q35 type. Tested in 4.4.4 Gianluca

Hi, We have a strange thing, which not clear to us. When provisioning a new VM via REST API, if the number of vCPU for that VM is more than 16, I'm getting this error: Fault reason is "Operation Failed". Fault detail is "[Cannot add VM. Maximum number of threads per cpu exceeded]". HTTP response code is 409. Our version is: Version 4.3.6.6-1.0.9.el7 Note that manual provisioning from the UI do not produce any error when using vCPU > 16. It seems like the issue is related to this setting (from the engine): [root@olvmengine01 ~]# engine-config -g MaxNumOfThreadsPerCpu MaxNumOfThreadsPerCpu: 8 version: 4.1 MaxNumOfThreadsPerCpu: 8 version: 4.2 MaxNumOfThreadsPerCpu: 8 version: 4.3 [root@olvmengine01 ~]# But when trying to set it to another number, I'm always get this error, for example: [root@olvmengine01 ~]# engine-config -s MaxNumOfThreadsPerCpu=10 Please select a version: 1. 4.1 2. 4.2 3. 4.3 3 Cannot set value 10 to key MaxNumOfThreadsPerCpu. VM Portal. User can't access the details box

Hi, We're running oVirt 4.1.8. We make an intense use of the VM Portal, as our students use it to access and handle their machines. We're currently having an issue with just one of our users. He claims that he created a VM, and when tried to edit its details (clicking on the pencil), a screen stating that the "VM Portal is experiencing some issues" is shown (screenshot added). I granted a UserRole permission on a user I handle, and I don't experience that problem, I can edit the VM with no issues. The user also states that this happens on any VM he creates. I see nothing relevant in the log regarding this issue. Please, any hint how to debug this? Thanks. Nicolás

Did you install ovirt-guest-tools on the VM from the iso available at your engine vm package? Did the related service start in WIndows 10 OS? You didn't reply why you are forced to use so an "old" oVirt version: it is not old in absolute, but oVirt is rapidly evolving and you should stay at maximum behind one version. So if the latest is 4.3, stay no behind 4.2. Now, with 4.4 out since many months, stay no behind 4.3 at least... This way you get more correct help because more guys are on latest versions, that got many enhancements and many bug fixes (eg with snapshot management, illegal disks state some time, and so on) Gianluca

Hello all, I 'm using oVirt 4.2.1.7 and on windows VM i see an orange exclamation point that warns me to install the latest guest agent. On the VM (windows 10) i have installed: QEMU guest agent version 101.1.0 SPICE Guest Tools 0.141 Virtio-win-driver-installer version 0.1.185 UsbDk Runtime Libraries version 1.0.22 Spice webdavd 2.4 (64-bit) I can share the clipboard but can not mount a USB stick other than FAT-formatted or use a shared folder Is there a solution?

All, We have built a new oVirt cluster from scratch. We used the 4.4.4 installer released in December 2020. When deploying the engine we had the wizard create a Gluster volume for the engine on three hosts. All went well and the cluster is starting to take shape. When starting the engine we do see the following error each time the engine is started in /var/log/ovirt-engine/engine.log: 2021-02-23 08:06:09,208+01 WARN [org.ovirt.engine.core.dal.dbbroker.auditloghandling.AuditLogDirector] (EE-ManagedScheduledExecutorService-engineScheduledThreadPool-Thread-33) [4293beae] EVENT_ID: SYSTEM_CHANGE_STORAGE_POOL_STATUS_PROBLEMATIC(980), Invalid status on Data Center Default. Setting status to Non Responsive. Also when navigating in the engine web-ui to Compute -> Data Centers -> Default and check the events an event of id 980 is shown with the message: “Invalid status on Data Center Default. Setting status to Non Responsive.”. The date/time matches when the error is shown in the engine log. The datacenter overview does not show any warnings or errors and lists the Default datacenter as status Up. An interesting observation is that the cluster overview does have a status column on the far left, but the status is not mentioned. The field underneath the status heading is empty. Could that be the unknown status that the data center refers to? How could we investigate this further? The storage volumes do not show any issues and the cluster seems to function okay (it has not been used a lot yet as it has been built yesterday/today), but the error message does sound like something we need to get out of the way before we put the actual workload on it. Hi Joseph, Somehow I missed your email. I am thinking in similar direction, but in all honesty, it’s takes bit of effort to accept that we need complete platform deployment from 4.3 to 4.4, considering EL 8 is required, to have this fixed. Anyway, let’s try re-deploying engine with current platform version in testing env, take our notes and share them. This is actually nice, team work. 😊 For now, in production, I am going to increase the RAM and CPU, and if reboot is required, just do it again. Hi Marko, I have also had this problem on an oVirt 4.3 install - I could never fix it and have not tried to upgrade to 4.4 yet - my workaround for now (as you have deduced) is to just 'up' it while running so its hotswapped in - annoying, but I think the best way around this without upgrade would be to re-deploy the hosted engine defining the new resources using an engine-backup - but again this is just as scary as in-place upgrade lest you lock yourself out from your other running VMs in a production environment. I plan to do it - I just need some time to set it up in a lab so I know what to expect. Initially, I made the change via Portal, updating defined memory of HE from 16384 to 32768. The change is instantly visible on VM when I execute free -m , but in the VM info it still says 16384. I waited almost 4hours and this value did not get updated. Tried shutdown, remove GM, allow the HA to start the VM, it booted with 16384 allocated. Than I did it again, and tried with Update OVF from storage domain where the HE disk is, same, no change. Tried, updating memory again, migrating to another HA host – Update OVF , same thing, after reboot, the memory is back to 16384. Can somebody give me an advice where to look further? oVirt Node install with Foreman VG issue

Hi All, I have a server with a RAID1 disk for sda and RAID 5 disk for sdb. Following default install, prior to Cockpit Gluster and Engine wizards there is only a single Volume Group which doesn’t allow me to continue. If I manually configure the install and deselect sdb it gives other issues with multipath but at least I can resolve those. Is there a specific kickstart confuguration that should be used? oVirt 4.4.5 Sixth Release Candidate is now available for testing The oVirt Project is pleased to announce the availability of oVirt 4.4.5 Sixth Release Candidate for testing, as of February 18th, 2021. This update is the fifth in a series of stabilization updates to the 4.4 series. How to prevent hosts entering emergency mode after upgrade from oVirt 4.4.1 Note: Upgrading from 4.4.2 GA or later should not require re-doing these steps, if already performed while upgrading from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 GA. These are only required to be done once. Due to Bug 1837864 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1837864> - Host enter emergency mode after upgrading to latest build If you have your root file system on a multipath device on your hosts you should be aware that after upgrading from 4.4.1 to 4.4.5 you may get your host entering emergency mode. In order to prevent this be sure to upgrade oVirt Engine first, then on your hosts: 1. Remove the current lvm filter while still on 4.4.1, or in emergency mode (if rebooted). 2. Reboot. 3. Upgrade to 4.4.5 (redeploy in case of already being on 4.4.5). 4. Run vdsm-tool config-lvm-filter to confirm there is a new filter in place. 5. Only if not using oVirt Node: - run "dracut --force --add multipath” to rebuild initramfs with the correct filter configuration 6. Reboot. Hi Didi, Just to be sure, considering its an HA instance, I need to set to maintenance=global and execute these changes – CPU increase will most likely require reboot? For the HEAP changes, I have been doing that lot on the Atlassian instances, just not sure how oVirt-engine is going to react and if there are any guidelines I should stick to in ovirt case. I.e. What if I set min and max to same value? Is it going to be “ok” if I assign more than half of system RAM to the JAVA? It writes /etc/ovirt-engine/engine.conf.d/10-setup-java.conf . It's probably safer to create your own file for overriding, e.g. 99-my-setup-java.conf or something. ovirt-vmconsole (serial console) dimensions and word wrap

I frequently use the ovirt-vmconsole (serial console) to interact with my VMs. Is there a way to have ovirt-console recognize the terminal size automatically rather than defaulting to the standard 80 columns by 25 rows? If not, can the column/row size be adjusted globally (so the dimensions can be set once but persist for all console connected VMs)? Also, is there a way to enable word-wrap in the ovirt-vmconsole? Cannot startVM due to iso permission issue

Hi I have a brand new installation and I am trying to create a new VM, I have the Linux ISO uploaded to a NFS ISO Storage Domain but the VM refuses to start, I observe following error: *unable to open /rhev/data-center/mnt/LTST-VIRTMAN01:_ovirt_iso/a284c684-bfa2-49a1-b419-e81001b6196e/images/11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111/V1003434-01.iso: Permission denied* have tried to disable selinux just in case but without success. Any clues? Thanks

4.3 -> 4.4 upgrade question

Hello! We have only one 4.3 cluster and try to upgrade it to 4.4. I believe that engine-setup change the Cluster Setting "Default Network Provider" to "ovirt-provider-ovn" during upgrade procedure. So then we add freshly reinstalled RH8 host back to this cluster the oVirt tries to configure OVN on that host. But we don't want to use OVN. Is it safe to change this setting back to "No Default Provider" and continue hosts upgrade process ? Thank you.

Hi I'm a new to Ovirt so please forgive any gaping hole in my knowledge. I have a self hosted engine set up with two hosts. Centos 8.3, Ovirt 4.4, (cluster set to 4.5 because it told me to). I have Nvidia Tesla T4 cards in both hosts with Nvidia driver 450.102. I have Win10 VMs on one host and the HE on another. The problem I have is that when you reboot the Win10 VM it also reboots the host it's sat on. I have 'intel_iommu=on' in my grub file and both hosts pass virt-host-validate. This set up was working fine on Centos 7 with Ovirt 4.3 so I'm at a bit of a loss to know what's going on. I'll post up the logs if anyone can let me know which ones they think would be relevant. I have tried to upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4 in a self hosted environment and I now have multiple problems. One of which is that neither of my two hosts think they are running the hosted engine. What could cause this?

Changing the bridge for ovirt hosted engine

Hello, I'd like to move my ovirt hosted engine deploy to a different cluster, but the problem that I'm faced with is that my hosted engine bridge runs on "ovirtmgmt" but the cluster I'd like to move it to the default vm network is "ovirtmgmt_vlan" Is there a process in which I could shutdown my hosted vm, edit it's network then bring it back up on the new cluster? I have already tried redeploying the new cluster with "deploy hosted engine" on it, but when I try to start the engine on a host in the new cluster it fails because it can't find the ovirtmgmt bridge. Hi oVirt, What is the cleanest way to increase the memory and cpu for SHE engine? We have the Engine running on top of three HA hosts, so I guess the specs need to be change on all three, while engine is down. Is it done by editing the VM libvirt conf file or some other way? Where do I allocate more RAM to JAVA for oVirt? We are currently running 4.3.8 version. Hi, currently we're evaluation the usage of VXLAN in oVirt - and strangely enough we don't find anything in the manual. Has this been implemented, yet? Or are we just blind because it is hidden somewhere in the tons of features of /ovn/? Self-hosted engine storage migration

Hi to all, let me explain the scenario: In developer lab, I have a ovirt 4.1 environment with a single host and a self-hosted engine. The hosted engine runs on a nfs storage type. In this environment runs twelve VMs (thirteen if we include the self-hosted engine). So, now I have the urgency to do the following activities: 1) Migrate the hosted engine storage from nfs to fc (I have now an fc storage on this host). 2) Upgrade the ovirt to 4.3 release. So, I would like to have your help to understand how to implement the above two steps in this particular case ( one host and the self-hosted engine ). Regards

Small SAN suggestions?

I have an oVirt cluster with a significantly oversized SAN for storage (iSCSI, have 30TB storage but am only using about 2.5TB). I'm looking for a more appropriately-sized setup. Any suggestions? This is currently a Dell EqualLogic array - it doesn't look like they really even have a smallish VM-storage (at least that isn't VMware) product these days. Looking at our stats, we're doing more write than read ops (outside of when backups run), typically under 150 write ops per second. I'm not looking at replacing servers right now, so not looking at hyperconverged. Just interested in what hardware people are using these days for a setup this size. Building new cluster today - OS recommendations

Hi All, I've been testing with a single server "cluster" running oVirt w/Gluster and am about to build my in house cluster using three Dell servers. I was planing on putting CentOS 8 on these servers and building oVirt on top. With the recent changes to CentOS changing to CentOS Stream, I have concerns. I'm tempted to build my cluster with CentOS 8 (as this is what I tested on) and assume that there will be some official word from oVirt as to how to proceed come end of year. Any suggestions from folks here? Any one know if there is anything out from oVirt crew already around this? Cheers, Gervais

Testing PXE uefi boot in oVirt

Hello, I'm testing a configuration with a CentOS 8.3 VM as a PXE server for UEFI boot. Its chipset/fw type is "I440FX Chipset with BIOS", I don't think it is important. And I have another (tobe, configured in hw as rhel 8.0) CentOS 8 VM configured now as "Q35 Chipset with UEFI" as a client. I already removed filters from vnics of both It seems that the client successfully downloads the BOOTX64.EFI but then fails fetching the netboot image with the message: Fetching Netboot Image Unable to fetch TFTP image: TFTP Error under tftp root dir I created grub.cfg this way set timeout=60 menuentry 'CentOS 8.3' { linuxefi images/c83/vmlinuz ip=dhcp inst.repo=http://172.20.0.1/c83/ initrdefi images/c83/initrd.img } and also a link to it with the mac address of the client in the form grub.cfg-00:1a:4a:19:01:54 -> grub.cfg documentation for uefi pxe server config is not quite clear on where to put it and naming Any good docs? Also the latest rh el 8.3 advanced installation guide is not so clear...
