Hello.which environment type I choose?

Dear: Hello. My name is Owen. First, I appreciate you spend time to check my email. Recently I want to use oVirt to build a project. But after reading the official document, I have some questions to ask. The project is intended to set up a physical server that is used to implement virtualization, Variable quantity of thin clients for users. But I don't know which environment types I should use to deploy. The number two question is why the system environment is different between each version of o-virt？Because centos 7 is the major version. But so many versions of o-virt is not centos 7 or centos 8.can you tell me the reason. Thank you.At last, I have a question.I ever joined the IRC, but there is no response to answer my question. Could you tell me where I can take part in the community with developers who develope o-virt.Thanks

multipath and VDSM REVISION value mappings

Hello, considering that the best practice is to keep the multipath.conf file unmodified, is there a table with the mapping between the version of oVirt/RHV and the value of "VDSM REVISION" in /etc/multipath.conf, so that in case of doubts one can crosscheck (eg inherited environment where different admins were managing...)? Does this value depend only on the hypervisor installed sw version or also on the Cluster Compatibility version of the cluster the host belongs to, or on the engine version? In several oVirt/RHV environments with 4.3 / 4.4 I see several numbers for the VDSM REVISION from 2.0, to 1.9 and 1.5... Also what could be the impact of having a wrong (higher or lower) revision inside the file? Thanks, Gianluca

move ovirt 4.3.9 to RHEL 8

Hi, I am laying the groupwork for upgrade ovirt to 4.4. Since the standalone ovirt mgr is now running on RHEL 7, I have installed RHEL 8 to a new VM. Unfortunately, after installing ovirt-release43, I am not able to find documentation for the dnf modules required. All the current documentation point to ovirt-release44 and dnf modules not available for ovirt 4.3/RHEL 8. I have these repos enabled... Custom Fence Agent

Greetings everyone, I am having another problem that I was hoping to get some assistance with. I have created my own custom fence agent for some tasmota-flashed wifi smart plugs, that can control plug power input to ovirt nodes. This works great; however I am running into a problem getting it added to ovirt as a power manager. I got the custom fence agent added with engine-config -s, and it shows up in the webui to select as a power management agent, then I put in the details for the plug, IP address, login, password, and press the "test" button, which passes, and shows the status as power=on. Once I save the settings, however, it is logged in the engine.log file that fencing will fail, because there is no node available to proxy the operation. When I go back into the power management settings, and press "test" again, then I get the error: "Test failed: Failed to run fence status-check on host 'ovirt1'. No other host was available to serve as proxy for the operation." I have the agent script in /usr/sbin/ on all nodes, execute permissions set, and I can run it manually at the command line just fine, so I am really at a loss here as what to check. What am I missing here? Please help. Thank you for your time. AFFINITY GROUPS

Hi I would like to know how AFFINITY GROUPS works. I have 2 VM in 2 hosts, each VM runs in a host. Let's call HOST_X where vm01 runs HOST_Y where vm02 runs I have set up an affinity group where it says vm01 relates to HOST_X, vm02 relates to HOST_Y. VM affinity rule is set to negative and HOST affinity rule set to positive. I need both vm01 and vm02 to run in their respective physical host. I have a problem, when vm01 is stopped and HOST_Y is rebooted vm02 starts in HOST_X, how can I avoid that? Thank you Luis Sanchez

recovering gluster volumes when moving hosts to a new datacenter

Hi, I moved 3 hosts (for replica 3 volume) from a previous datacenter to a new datacenter. Those hosts had initially been configured in a gluster cluster and managed multiple gluster volume created with ovirt UI. These hosts are now apart of a new gluster cluster and they see each others with cli "gluster peer status" as well as the associated volumes "gluter volumes list". But I can't make gluster volumes visible in the usually "volume" tab, so ovirt doesn't seem to see them. Is there a way to import pre existing gluster volume so as to ovirt be able to manage them ? Windows 10 on older CPUs

I have an oVirt cluster running 4.3.10 on older hardware with a cluster CPU type of Intel Nehalem. I needed to install a Windows 10 (latest release) VM, which oVirt rejected because of the CPU model. I remember there being issues with certain versions of Windows and this CPU model under oVirt (I don't do Windows very often and had forgotten). I instead told oVirt I was installing Windows 8 (which it accepted), and then installed - it installed and appears to be working just fine. I don't know if Microsoft changed whatever used to break or what... I remember the problem before not even getting through install, so it seems to be okay. ovirt node ng 4.4 crash in anaconda when setting ntp

Hello, when installing ovirt node ng 4.4 on a Dell M620 I remember I had a crash in anaconda if I try to set up ntp. Using ovirt-node-ng-installer-4.4.4-2020122111.el8.iso As soon as I select it and try to type the hostname to use, all stops and then anaconda aborts. Just today I had the same with the latest RHVH 4.4 iso: RHVH-4.4-20201210.0-RHVH-x86_64-dvd1.iso on an R630. Quite disappointing because I also have to fight with iDRAC8 to install the OS: it is slow to die. In practice I waste about one hour.... Is anyone aware of it or able to reproduce on another platform so that eventually I'm going to open a bug/case for it? My config is default one in anaconda accepting default and creating a bonded connection (LACP). Then as the last step I go into the set time/date and click on the ntp button and I get the problem as soon as I try to type inside the text box. Thanks, Gianluca

Hi, We got the following error message from our 3 Server Setup this morning. Two of the servers where switched off by a "User". Simply power off. One of the server startup well and the other one provide the following message. What should we do first, we can't mount the vmstore manual. The system takes a lot of minutes. Did anyone have an idea? How to reset network on all cluster members (controller and host) to defaults for cleans start?

I have a new Ovirt 4.4.5 cluster consisting of a controller and a single host, both running on centos 8. I believe I have messed up my network configurations by using a mix of oVirt and nmcli functions to try to resolve problems. Is there an easy way to reset everything on the controller and host machines to get a clean start? Or do I need to start from scratch and re-install centos. Thank you in advance. David Johnson

Gluster volume slower then raid1 zpool speed

Hi, Can anyone help me with the performance on my 3 node gluster on zfs (it is setup with one arbiter) The performance on the single vm I have on it (with engine) is 50% worse then a single bare metal disk, on the writes. I have enabled "Optimize for virt store" I run 1Gbps 1500MTU network, could this be the write performance killer? Is this to be expected from a 2xHDD zfs raid one on each node, with 3xNode arbiter setup? Maybe I should move to raid 5 or 6? Maybe I should add SSD cache to raid1 zfs zpools? What are your thoughts? What to do for optimize this setup? I would like to run zfs with gluster and I can deal with a little performance loss, but not that much.

If you system will have only Gluster -> you can blacklist everything in multipath.But imagine you have gluster and also SAN or iSCSI -> then you need to blacklist only local disks that Gluster uses, but not the SAN. New setup - Failing to Activate storage domain on NFS shared storage

I installed ovirt node 4.4.4 as well as 4.4.5-pre and experience the same problem with both versions. The issue occurs in both cockpit UI and tmux'd CLI of ovirt-hosted-engine-setup. I get passed the point where the VM is created and running. I tried to do some debugging on my own before reaching out to this list. Any help is much appreciated! ovirt node hardware: NUC format Jetway w/ Intel N3160 (Braswell 4 cores/4threads), 8GB RAM, 64GB SSD. I understand this is underspec'd, but I believe it meets the minimum requirements. Correction, the issue came back, but I fixed it again, the actual issue was multipathd. OVN and change of mgmt network

Hello, I previously had OVN running on engine (as OVN provider with northd and northbound and southbound DBs) and hosts (with OVN controller). After changing mgmt ip of hosts (engine has retained instead the same ip), I executed again on them the command: vdsm-tool ovn-config <ip_of_engine> <nel_local_ip_of_host> Now I think I have to clean up some things, eg: 1) On engine where I get these lines below systemctl status ovn-northd.service -l . . . I fixed my own issue, and for everyone else that may run into this, the issue was the fact that I created the first oVirt node VM inside VMware, and got it fully configured with all the software/disks/partitioning/settings, then cloned it to two more VMs. Then I ran the hosted-engine deployment and set up the cluster. I think it was because I used clones for each cluster node, and that confused things due to device/system identifiers. I rebuilt all 3 node VMs from scratch, and everything works perfectly now. Replaced host but ovn complains of duplicate port

I had to rebuild a host. I first removed it from Ovirt then reinstalled the OS. I then used the same 192.xxx.xxx.207 IP as the old host. I then added it to Ovirt which seem to go OK. Red Hat has announced last year that ovirt and openstack will be integrated with openshift in the future. So, will there be ovirt 4.5 or ovirt 4.6? Hey Guys, is there a way how to reserve MAC address for VMs created from the pool ? I have a workaround via ansible playbook which works fine but I am wondering if there is any other solution how to achieve this. Unable to ping host from VM's or VM's from host

I have a brand new Ovirt 4.5 cluster on centos 8 and brand new hardware. I have a set of VM's, some of whom I have been able to connect to in the past, others that I have never been able to connect to other than with the SPICE console ui. Right now, I am unable to connect from outside my cluster to any of the VPN's other than through the SPICE console. Host IP: 192.168.2.188 Physical Address Example VM IP: 10.21.10.101 with vLAN tag Works: * I can connect between vm's on the same subnet on the same VM. When logged into 10.21.10.101 I can ping 10.21.10.100 Doesn't work: * I cannot connect from VM's to the host. * I cannot connect from the host to VM's PING 10.21.10.100 (10.21.10.100) 56(84) bytes of data. From <<internet gateway>> icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable * I cannot connect from the VM's to the internet gateway * I cannot connect to the VM's from other systems on the physical network "Destination Host Unreachable" To me it looks like the virtual bridge is misconfigured, but I can't figure out how to reconfigure it. Geographically-distrbuted Ovirt Cluster?

Hi, Right now I run a 1-server hyperconverged hosted-engine deployment. Other than requiring systemwide downtime to perform host maintenance, it has worked fairly well for me over the past few years. However, after a couple power and upstream-network outages, there have been questions about the ability to "distribute the load", so to speak. Considering what our workload is (main git repo, wiki, email list + archives, etc), it can't easily be distributed by a periodic resync and DNS round robin like a static web site. To solve this distribution problem I was wondering if there might be some way to deploy a handful of physical servers in different geographic locations that work together to create an HE environment for guest VMs? My initial fear would be that it would require dedicated 1Gb (or higher) between the sites to move data? Let's say we do NOT have that level of connectivity. I saw something about geographic replication in Gluster? But that would seem to be more about replicating a local cluster to a remote cluster? I suspect the answer is: no, a cluster must all be physically co-located. But I figured I would ask the experts. CentOS Stream support

Hi all, we would like to ask about interest in community about oVirt moving to CentOS Stream. There were some requests before but it’s hard to see how many people would really like to see that. With CentOS releases lagging behind RHEL for months it’s interesting to consider moving to CentOS Stream as it is much more up to date and allows us to fix bugs faster, with less workarounds and overhead for maintaining old code. E.g. our current integration tests do not really pass on CentOS 8.1 and we can’t really do much about that other than wait for more up to date packages. It would also bring us closer to make oVirt run smoothly on RHEL as that is also much closer to Stream than it is to outdated CentOS. So..would you like us to support CentOS Stream? We don’t really have capacity to run 3 different platforms, would you still want oVirt to support CentOS Stream if it means “less support” for regular CentOS? There are some concerns about Stream being a bit less stable, do you share those concerns? Thank you for your comments, michal

First of all , verify the gluster volume options (gluster volume info <VOLNAME> ; gluster volume status <VOLNAME>).When you use HCI, ovirt sets up a lot of optimized options in order to gain the maximum of the Gluster storage. HCI Deployment via Ansible

I am trying to teach myself new and better means to deploy and control oVirt and HCI deployment. Does anyone have notes, experience and or examples.. website etc.. where someone managed deployment and admin of HCI deployment (CentOS + Cockpit + gluster + oVirt) and instead of using shell and manaual / gui deployment, did this "Infrastructure as code" Ex Step 1: 1) Foundation with kickstart. three nodes with "minimal install" all with ssh keyless password login for user "ansible" 2) Keys exchanged between nodes for keyless login for root and ansible user 3) Using ansible publish HCI deployment playbook. -> Define drive for each host to use -> Define name and host / ip of engine -> install HCI engine with gluster -> Add SSH keys for ansible and access so future oVirt interaction can be done via ansible I am just starting to research this.. but hoping others have blazed this path and I can leverage their process. Concerns: 1) How to get HCI to deploy only engine layer on (in my case... 512GB SSD .. with VDO and avoid destroying VMS not related to engine).. aka if I have to repair engine again will it keep nuking the volumes "data" and "vmstore" volumes which I think the HCI deployment wants to do if it has to redeploy fresh. 2) If above is always to be an issue .. can I make default VM deployment be a dedicated gluster volume (my case is 1TB SSD with VDO in each server) such that rebuild of engine layer can just slurp back in the VMs from that volume.

Performance issue to retrieve VM's after upgrading engine from 4.2 to 4.3

This is a weird issue. Before upgrading it took 8-9 seconds to retrieve all VM's, 1230, using /ovirt-engine/api/vms URI. After the upgrade it now takes over 2 minutes. Query other items such as hosts, clusters, data centers etc is fast and the same speed as prior the upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3 I don't know if this is DB related or jboss related but any clue where to start to dig deeper is welcome. I also built a new VM and restored the DB's and ran engine-setup, but that new engine also gets more or less exactly the same response times for the VM's using the restAPI. I have another engine with same version 4.3.10.4-1, That only have 261 VMs but those are retrieved within 1-2 seconds only so I don't understand how that engine is so much faster than the one I upgraded. The UI also has the same long response times to show VM's from Compute -> Virtual Machines Any idea what could cause this?

last dec i installed hosted-engine seems to be working, we can migrate the engine to different host. but we need to reinstall everything because of gluster additional configuration. so we did installed hosted-engine. but as per checking. we cannot migrate the engine to other hosts. and the ovirt-ha-agent and ovirt-ha-broker is status is inactive (dead) what are we missing?

Hi to all. There is some problem with metric storage installation on oVirt (v4.4.4.7-1.el8). According to all manuals (both overt and red hat) I have to run ovirt-metrics-store-installation.yml Ansible playbook. Hi, according to HA VM documentation, a paused VM may be started on another host and later resumed on the original host. - https://www.ovirt.org/develop/ha-vms.html here, I'm assuming the HA VM was paused due to I/O error. but I'm wondering how it can happen because I guess the HA VM will be restarted on another host only after it's completely killed from the original host. can you give the split brain scenario?

I think it's easier to get the Vmware's CA certificate and import it on all hosts + engine and trust it.By default you should put it at /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors/ and then use "update-ca-trust" to make all certs signed by the Vmware vCenter's CA trusted. Hosted Engine stuck in bios

Hi, I recently did some updates of ovirt from 4.4.1 or 4.4.3 to 4.4.4, also setting the default datacenter from 4.4 to 4.5 and making the default bios q35+eufi. Unfortunately quite a few things. Anyone know how to resolve this?
