Missing step(s) after custom x509 certificates

I followed the docs at https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/appe-oVirt_and_SSL/ and all works well from the usual web portal. Went to test moVirt and ran into a snag. It wants to download the CA using http://fqdn/ovirt-engine/services/pki-resource?resource=ca-certificate&form…, but that's grabbing the old CA issued by the engine rather than my custom CA. What else needs to be changed? I'm sure I can finagle my way to a fix here by telling moVirt to use a custom URL or file, but this looks like a bug in the docs that would probably best be fixed. -- John Florian

disk performance findings

I have deployed a HCI environment several times now as I wanted to get some idea of disk performance with Gluster/ On a Dell R720 3 node cluster with H710 PERC controller and 8 x 2TB 7200 RPM SATA drives. My first test was with the 8 drives configured as H/W RAID 6 and I configured Gluster as RAID 6 - quite a lot of redundancy but that was just my first deployment Running IOMeter for 24 hours using all in one access specification I got 240 IOPs. Pretty good for SATA drives. I then broke the RAID and configured 8 virtual disks, one per physical and then deployed Gluster as JBOD - I am not sure how resilient that is, but I assume in a 3 node cluster failures to tolerate would be one. This gave me 267 IOPs. I don't know that much about the internals of Gluster, but when I first asked about this there didn't seem to be much knowledge of what configuration would be best for HCI. I plan to do more research and tests on this, but for what its worth for now, I am going down the JBOD route with no H/W RAID. Regards Bill

Restore and rename engine

Hello, I have been trying to test our system by restoring from backup to a new machine and running ovirt-engine-rename, then engine-setup. I get to sent back to the main oVirt Web page from any of the portals, which has an Warning triangle saying the engine is initializing. and in the URL it has ovirt-engine/?error_description=server_error%3A+%2Fetc%2Fpki%2Fjava%2Fcacerts+(No+such+file+or+directory)&error=server_error The original machine had a certificate signed by an external authority. I tried putting back the link from apache-ca.pem to ca.pem, the original apache.key.nopass, websocket-proxy.key.nopass as well as hte key files. I upgraded from 4.1.9 to 4.2.3 and it says it is resigning the certificates but still fails. Regards, Paul S. quick way to start glusterfs managed engine over?

I have successfully got glusterfs playbook to finish once and then my networking was wrong on the managed engine and on the hosts, so I started over. Now I can't seem to even get that far again. I completely reloaded the hosts, but that takes a while. Last time glusterfs failed right at the end with "host is not in 'Peer in Cluster' state" Redeploying fails as partitions already exist. I am deploying to /dev/sdb Is there a quick way to get /dev/sdb back into a state to redeploy to? I think I got there once by doing pvremove and gdisk zap gpt, but not sure if that worked or caused problem on the redeploy. Its very time consuming to start over from scratch, so would appreciate if there is any shortcut instead of reloading the OS. Thans Bill

Hi Team, I want to attach the disk using the oVIrt rest API, I use the version* 4.2* and completed my script. Unable to backend oVirt with Cinder

Creating snapshot of a subset of disks

oVirt 4.2 and I/O threads configuration

Hello, in oVirt 4.1 I could enable I/O threads for a VM and then there was a field where I could define how many I/O threads (aka virtual scsi controllers from vm point of view). In 4.2 now I see only the option to enable them but not to specify the number. ovirt upgrade 4.1 -> 4.2: host bricks down

Hi all, I have a ovirt 2 node cluster for testing with self hosted engine on top gluster. The cluster was running on 4.1. After the upgrade to 4.2, which generally went smoothly, I am seeing that the bricks of one of the hosts (v1) are detected as down, while the gluster is ok when checked with command lines and all volumes mounted. cloud-init reverting static network settings to DHCP on shutdown and restart

Setting static network settings in the "Initial Run" section works fine when deploying a VM from template. When using "Run" to start the VM, customization works as expected. On a reboot the network settings are maintained however if the VM is shutdown and restarted the settings are reverted to DHCP. When editing the VM the cloud-init settings are still set and a visible in the "Initial Run" section. cloud-init (0.7.9-24.el7.centos) - Previously 0.7.9-20.el7.centos but upgraded to see if it would fix the issue. oVirt engine (4.2.4.1-1.el7) Guest OS (CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708) There is another thread that reports exactly the same issue and behavior here: - https://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2018-March/087860.html Grateful for any thoughts or assistance. Hello, we are subject to PCI-DSS. I have some questions. We currently have setup oVirt in our environnement. We created 2 Datacenter. - one with a cluster with hosted engine on gluster (Hyperconverged env) which represents the "LAN" part - one with a cluster with gluster storage wich is the DMZ In PCI-DSS we have to secure communication (use HTTPs as much as possible). I did saw that ovirt-ha-agent (on hosted-engine capable host) check the status of the engine by sending GET request on the hosted-engine on port 80 (the same check that hosted-engine --vm-status did in fact). Since ovirt 4.2.2, with the introduction of gluster eventing, a new flow (HTTP post resquest) is needed from gluster nodes to the engine. (In my case, it's a flow from the DMZ to the LAN part in HTTP (non secure) Here is my question. Is it possible to "hardering" this part of the engine ? Another question out of PCI scope. Events like warning and error in the dashboard are clean each days. I tried to find which process did that (look into /etc/cron.daily, root crontab, etc) on the engine without succes. Is there any maintenance task that is run periodicaly ? Could we have the list of all the engine's task ? (regulary check the status of host, vm, storage) also the frequency ? I would appreciate the help. (Great great product ovirt !) Thank you for your jobs ! We did manage KVM hypervisor as standalone machine without all the power that libvirt provides. No need to spend lot of money into licencing product (VSphere and co)

Hi Guys, I've an answer... Here's how I did it... First, I needed kpartx ... so #apt-get install kpartx Then setup a loopback device for the raw hdd image #losetup /dev/loop4 [IMAGE FILE] #kpartx -a /dev/loop4 This allowed me to mount the various partitions included in the VM. General failure

Hi, We're running oVirt 4.1.9 (we cannot upgrade at this time) and we're having a major problem in our infrastructure. On friday, a snapshots were automatically created on more than 200 VMs and as this was just a test task, all of them were deleted at the same time, which seems to have corrupted several VMs. When trying to delete a snapshot on some of the VMs, a "General error" is thrown with a NullPointerException in the engine log (attached). But the worst part is that when some of these machines is powered off and then powered on, the VMs are corrupt... VM myvm is down with error. It looks like we are experiencing a bug in the version of glusterfs included with ovirt 4.2.3. Our setup is/was a gluster based storage system for VM's. The gluster data storage I'm assuming is okay, I think the hosted engine is hosed, and needs restored, but that's another thread. I can copy the raw disk file off of the gluster data domain. What's the best way to mount it short of importing it into another gluster domain? With vmware, we can grab the disk file and move it from server to server without issue. You can mount and explore contents with workstation. What do we have available to us for ovirt? Thanks,

I have a 4 node setup (centos 7) with hosted engine on glusterfs (replica 3 arbiter1). Gluster fs is like this ohost01 104G brick (real data) ohost02 104g brick (real data) ohost04 104g brick (arbiter) ohost05 104g partition used as nfs-storage. hosted engine is on gluster. I also have an fc domain of 3,6 TB mount of gluster is like this storage=172.16.224.10:/engine mnt_options=backup-volfile-servers=172.16.224.11:172.16.224.13 172.16.224.10 is ohost01 storage network 172.16.224.12 is ohost02 storage network 172.16.224.13 is ohost04 storage network Today I upgraded all nodes. I did it like this: hosted-engine was running on ohost05 at the time Put ohost04 (arbiter) on maintenance and did upgrade (ok) Same with ohost02 Ohost01 was spm so I did ohost05 spm then put ohost01 on maintenance and then upgraded it. I notticed that engine VM paused during the process (which usualy does not happen) as I have backup-volfile-servers mount option. But today I notticed that this option is ignored. On the hosts I also noted that mount is like this 172.16.224.10:/engine on /rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD/172.16.224.10:_engine type fuse.glusterfs (rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,max_read=131072) so reduduncy is gone from gluster and I cannot figure out why. If I restart ohost01 (after maintenance) hosted engine get paused until ohost01 comes back up. How can I solve this issue

On this oVirt DC, I reproduced this issue twice on 2 different hosts. In this engine log above, you see that I'm using my account to manage this engine, as I 'm doing for years with no issue. RHEL 7.5 as an oVirt host - missing packages

Hello everyone, I believe there is a potential issue with the RHEL 7 yum repos and at least one missing RPM to convert a pre-existing RHEL 7.5 system into an oVirt host node. I have the following YUM repos enabled in my RHEL 7 system, according to the documentation: rhel-7-server-rpms rhel-7-server-optional-rpms rhel-7-server-extras-rpms I installed the oVirt 4.2 RPM: ovirt-release42-4.2.3.1-1.el7.noarch I then go to the engine GUI to add the new host, and during the installation process I am informed that there is a YUM transaction error with the following package being unavailable: python-qpid-proton (as a dependency install for the python-gofer-proton package) I dug around Red Hat's YUM repos and discovered that this package only exists in the rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.{1..3}-rpms YUM repos from the official Red Hat site. Hello, I successfully installed Ovirt Node NG from ISO to an ISCSI target attached via first network interface by using following extensions to the grub cmdline: "rd.iscsi.ibft=1 ip=ibft ip=eno2:dhcp" I want to use the server as diskless ovirt-node-ng Server. After successful install the system reboots and starts up but it fails later in dracut even having detected correctly the disk and all the LV's. HostedEngine and affinity groups

Hi, i operate a 3 node ovirt42 cluster (hyperconverged). Now i would like to isolate the HostedEngine from the other VMs. The reason is to minimize the impact of outage of one of the nodes. When the node with the HE is away there is no impact at all on the running VMs. If one of the other nodes goes down, then i have still a running HE which restarts the missing VMs on remaining nodes fast again. I cannot use hard affinity because in case of failure i need all resources of the 2 remaining modes, so i configured a soft negative affinity group for every VM between this VM and the HE. As a first test i migrated the HE to a node with VMs but even after a while nothing happened. I would have expected that either the HE or the VMs on this node would have been migrated to fullfill the soft negative affinity. Now my questions: Are my thoughts correct? Is there a better solution than making one (soft negative) affinity group for every VM to isolate from HE? Does the affinity group enforcement engine work at all with soft rules? Regards, Robert

Hi, we see here a confusing problem. A college reboots/shutdown his VMs for maintenance. After that he starts the VMs (~20), but one of them throws following error: > VM <name> is down with error. Exit message: internal error: Unknown CPU-Model SandyBridge,+spec-ctrl All nodes of the clusters are reporting: > CPU Type: > Intel SandyBridge IBRS Family And the cluster is configured with: > Cluster CPU Type: > Intel SandyBridge IBRS Family My quick fix for the vm was, that I used a specific (not the cluster default) CPU-Model without the spectre/meltdown mitigation: > Guest CPU Type: > SandyBridge I've also tried to select manually "SandyBridge,+spec-ctrl". A part from configuring high performance vm, that gives me no high availability. Can I allocate huge pages using vdsm-hook-hugepages-4.19.31-1.el7.centos.noarch it seems that after updating an environment to 4.2 I'm not able to start a VM configured with the custom property I get Th ehost xxxxx did not satisfy internal filter HugePages because there are not enough free huge pages to run the VM But on host I have # cat /proc/meminfo | grep -i huge AnonHugePages: 0 kB HugePages_Total: 60000 HugePages_Free: 60000 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB # and the custom property is configured to allocate 8200 huge pages to the guest The gropu configured in sysctl.d/10-hugepages.conf is vm.hugetlb_shm_group = 36 Do I have to set anything in /etc/securily/limits.d/ for qemu user? Gluster not synicng changes between nodes for engine

Hi Guys, I've got 60 some odd files for each of the nodes in the cluster, they don't seem to be syncing. Running a volume heal engine full, reports successful. Running volume heal engine info reports the same files, and doesn't seem to be syncing. Running a volume heal engine info split-brain, there's nothing listed in split-brain. Peers show as connected. Gluster volumes are started/up. Hosted-engine --vm-status reports : The hosted engine configuration has not been retrieved from shared storage. Please ensure that ovirt-ha-agent is running and the storage server is reachable. This is leaving the cluster in an engine down with all vm's down state... Thanks,

Install CiscoISE VM on oVirt

Hi, I am not sure whether I should write it here. However the documents referred to specifies that I have change something in BIOS of VM & there is no way to get access to BIOS. Hence I am writing here. I am trying to install Cisco ISE in a VM on oVirt. The installation process halts reporting "Unsupported Hardware Found. The Cisco UDI (Unique Device Identifier) found on this appliance does not match with supported UDI of the product being Installed. Exiting installation" However it works perfectly on VMWare ESXi, VMWare Workstation and VMWare Fusion. In fact I tested this in VMWare Workstation and VMWare Fusion. The same ISO file throws above error. Cisco ISE is based on RHEL 7 and it is hardened. Has any one attempted to install Cisco ISE in oVirt? Any one throw some light? I would set the storage domain to maintenance, convert the LUN from thin to preallocated on the array, remove "Discard After Delete" from the advanced settings of the storage domain and active it again. Non-responsive vm's due to crashed host and hosted vm liveliness check fails

Dear Community: The local drive on a host running ovirt-node-ng-4.1.9 in a three node cluster failed. I have production JIRA and Postres running on it at the time, not in HA, just simple vm's. Storage is via NFS on a Synology NAS. Hosted Engine was on a different host, but JIRA and Postgres vm's showed nonresponsive. I tried different things but then stupidly thought that upgrading my Hosted Engine would reinitialize the vm's that were on the failed host. Update of HE seemed to go well (output below) but now my Hosted Engine, while up, fails the liveliness check and the web management console is unavailable. I cannot console into the HE from the host it is running on. Below are the results of my attempts to console into the Hosted Engine. Please help! I have search forums, lists and Google but have not been able to fix this. All, I recently tried to used the OVA export/import functionality. It seems I misunderstood the intentions. I expected OVA export/import to be reciprocal functionalities. I expected what we export as OVA to be importable as OVA in ovirt. What I have found is the following: * It seems OVA export does export an OVA, though the format is not spec compliant * We use 'disk/' in the HostResource xml field instead of '/disk/' for example in the ovf. * It seems OVA import is intended specifically for VMWare OVA's? * I thought I read about export domains being deprecated, and incorrectly assumed the recently added OVA export/import was to make things better for one off import/export. Can anyone clarify the following: * Is OVA import really just VMWare OVA's? * Are we really not spec compliant with the OVA/OVF format as my example above shows? OR do I misunderstand something? * After spending my time yesterday, I recall now that the deprecation of export domain is in favor of detaching and re-attaching ANY data domain. * What is the purpose of our OVA export if we ourselves indeed cannot import our own OVA? All, I put together a full purge ansible script for CentOS. I figured I'd share it here. I ran into many issues with spurious failures of installs when I would try to reinstall ovirt on CentOS after having "removed" it. I was developing an automated install of our own software along with ovirt but along the way I had to reinstall on the same box numerous times. Initially I'd get spurious failures from leftover cruft that would get in the way. It uses ovirts own engine cleanup script first if it exists, then fully cleans every other thing that can affect it. Tested on CentOS, probably will work on other distros without too much trouble. guests crashing during live migration(NUMA config issue)

Hello, during updates of our physical nodes running ovirt 4.2.3 I had to live- migrate all VMs to evacuate them from the hosts. This caused roughly 10% of guests to end up crashed /shutdown after live migration. Hosted engine cannot migrate

Hello everyone, I have some Centos7 vms created from template ( CentOS 7 Generic Cloud Image v1802 for x86_64 ) I have alocated planty of resources to them, but they all have this issue when starting, they hang with the following message in console about 5-7 minutes. [drm] Initialized qxl 0.1.0 20120117 for 0000:00:02:0 on mirror 0 After a while, vm eventually boots up... Can someone clarify these setting for me, I am having difficulty parsing what exactly they mean. They seem to me to be backwards. If I wish to set a threshold at which I want my host to be consider over utilized, not schedule any new VMs, and migrate VMs away, then surely I should specify a minimum threshold of free memory. I.E. if free memory drops below my threshold (OR memory use exceed a maximum threshold) migrate VM's off of this system. Conversely if a system is underutilized I should set a maximum threshold of free memory (Or minimum used memory). Thanks, --Alastair

Hi Folks, Could someone could suggest me what is the best way to usage FC Storage with oVirt ? Is there any wayt to create DataStorage like "VMware" with Luns? Or need I usage the LUNS as VM disks!? Unable to authenticate using AD accounts

I am having an issue getting users to authenticate using the Active Directory backend. I've installed the ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-setup package and ran ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-setup to configure everything however users are unable to authenticate. Grubx64.efi missing from boot partition

Hi Guys, We went to physically move a node and have found the node will not boot successfully anymore. The error coming up is :failed to open/ file not found: \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi This file is found in \EFI\centos\grubx64.efi. I have copied it to \EFI\BOOT\ and got the machine to boot, however, it has no working networking. Modifying /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-xyzabz123 appropriately restored networking, however, the node is not able to be resumed/activated. This is probably because the blade reports the following interfaces: eno1, eno2, eno3, eno4 When originally deployed, they were eno1,eno2, eth0, eth1. The engine still sees the host as having the eno+eth combo. Any ideas guys? Thanks!

Unable to upgrade

engine-setup fails to upgrade postgresql

After installing the ovirt 4.2 repository and running engine-setup the upgrade script fails with an error as shown below. [ ERROR ] Postgresql client version is '9.5.9', whereas the version on 'localhost' is '9.2.23'. Please use a PostgreSQL server of version '9.5.9'. Please note the following required changes in postgresql.conf on 'localhost': postgresql.conf is usually in /var/lib/pgsql/data, /var/opt/rh/rh-postgresql95/lib/pgsql/data, or somewhere under /etc/postgresql* . You have to restart PostgreSQL after making these changes. Engine database host []: The setup script is supposed to take care of this automatically however it fails before even attempting to upgrade postgres. Does anybody know how to work around this?

Hosted Engine: brick size...is this a bug?

I have now done the oVirt 4.2.3.1 install at least 5 times, no, I don't consider myself any kind of expert. Even though the HE uses less than 10gb of space for some reason the install will fail if the brick is less than 58gb. Why is that? Look at this error: [ ERROR ] Error: Fault reason is "Operation Failed". Fault detail is "[Problem while trying to mount target]". HTTP response code is 400. [ ERROR ] fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false, "msg": "Fault reason is \"Operation Failed\". Fault detail is \"[Problem while trying to mount target]\". HTTP response code is 400."} The size of the brick was set at 50gb: [lv1] action=create vgname=gluster_vg1 lvname=engine_lv lvtype=thick size=50GB mount=/gluster_bricks/engine Solution: Edit size to 60gb, re-run & voila, all is good. Is this a bug or maybe it's a problem with the way I'm doing things.

Hi there, I have created a new user from hosted engine by: ovirt-aaa-jdbc-tool user add test_user --attribute=description='test user' --attribute=firstName=test_user ovirt-aaa-jdbc-tool user password-reset test_user --password=pass:changeme then I try to login and I get the message: *Unable to log in because the password has expired. Change the password to proceed. * When I click "Change the password" the browser redirects to: https://FQDN/ovirt-engine/sso/%s and I get *Bad RequestYour browser sent a request that this server could not understand.* Last time I tried with 4.2.1 and it was working with no issues. Hello, I’m planning to install Oracle 11g on a VM inside oVirt. I already knew about the licensing hell of running Oracle 11g on a virtualized environment. The question is about snapshotting Oracle 11gb when the VM is running. Is this supported? For example, on VMware and XenServer there’s the quiesce option to make the filesystem, with a little help from the guest agent, to be in an a good state for snapshots. But in oVirt, how this is handled? If supported, which operating systems are compatible with the feature? Thanks,

I can see we can add files to .cloudInit(cloudInit().files(files)) But API ignores it .. After minor upgrade oVirt Node to 4.2.3 can't start Virtual machine

Dear all, after upgrade oVirt Node to latest 4.2.3 I can't start any virtual machine with network interface. VM machine without network interface starts normally. Exactly the same situation is on freshly installed oVirt node machine with different hardware. I use openvswitch on both machines. After some searching I found out that there are the same version of openvswitch(2.9.0-3) on old and new version of oVirt node but different versions of libvirt(3.9.0-14 vs 3.2.0-14) Error message of libvirtd when the VM machine fail to start: VM OPNsense is down with error. Exit message: Unable to add bridge ovirtmgmt port vnet0: Operation not supported. Any suggestions? Thank you. Stefan

Hi all, If one cannot perform a minor upgrade of ovirt 4.1 (due to surprisingly missing repos...) is it ok to ignore this and proceed directly to major upgrade to ovirt 4.2? I don't like very much the idea as I don't know to what surprises I will have considering that this is production. What is your experience/suggestions? Alex

ovirt and gluster network config

Hi, I have my 5 ovirt nodes up and running and starting to move forward with actual ovirt and gluster setup. I am using gdeploy for deployment. the play book fails saying /dev/sdb is blacklisted by filter? I am following the blog up and running on the ovirt site. It mentioned adding # disable multipath [script2] action=execute file=/usr/share/ansible/gdeploy/scripts/disable-multipath.sh to get it to work, but it does not work. The script 3 section after this does have the file=/usr/share/gdeploy/scripts/blacklist_all_disks.sh in it. What can I do to get past this? Also not sure if I should be modifying the script/play as I don't really want an arbitrator host - if I have 5 real hosts all with the same storage in them? (10TB in each) and it only account for 3 hosts, can I add the other two later or should I try to modify the playbook to include these initially? I am sure I will be setting this up several times before I get it right, but at the moment I can't get past this error. Any help would really be appreciated! Thanks

Hi all, I created an ansible role for setting up ovirt-engine development environment. If you are not familiar with ansible, it's a tool for getting a machine into a specific 'state'. A role is a 'type' of machine, like 'db server' or 'web server' or 'dev rig.' Roles are 'applied' to machines. Unable to start VM on host with OVS networking

I have a production ovirt setup that's gone through multiple updates over the years. At some point when 4.0 or 4.1 came out, I switched from legacy networking to OVS, and everything worked perfectly until I upgraded to 4.2. Since I upgraded to 4.2, I've been getting messages that the networks were all out of sync, but everything continued working properly. Today I tracked down the network sync problem, fixed it on one of my three hosts, and then attempted to start a VM on the host. It refused to start with the error message: "Unable to add bridge ovirtmgmt port vnet0: Operation not supported". From what I can tell, the xml being generated is still for the old legacy network. I completely reinstalled the node, using the latest 4.2.3 node ISO image, and it still doesn't work. In the cluster, the switch type is "OVS (Experimental)" (and this option can't be changed, apparently), the compatibility version is 4.2, the firewall type is firewalld and there's no "Default Network Provider". I suspect that my upgrades have somehow left my system in half OVS/half legacy mode, but I'm not sure how to move it all the way to OVS mode and I don't want to mess with the other two hosts until I'm sure I've got it figured out. Hi Team, I am able to 1) Create a VM 2) Create and Attach DISK and NIC 3) I powered on the VM but I am yet to provide the network configuration for it. So there is no IP assigned, It is in Green color with UP arrow. Now I need to connect to this virtual machine and login using Guest console, I saw a documentation : https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/how-to/guest-console/connect-to-guest-d… But it is not clear. *Use Case needed : * 1) oVirt is running in centOS say running in 172.1.1.1 2) I have a Ubuntu machine say 192.2.2.2, I used the Firefox browser to login to oVirt engine (172.1.1.1) 3) Since my VM is powered ON, I need to use the console to login from my browser. Can't login into ovirt api

Maybe It created another api account at installation but i don't recall it. I'm unable to find any documentation regarding user management and api access. Hi all, In these days, I was struggling to find the relationship among vm/disk/disk-attachment. I just found that the IDs of DiskAttachment and relevant Disk are the same, in the mapping phrase by [1]. This is a extremely helpful for connecting the disk and the disk-attachment, especially when updating a disk by its relevant disk-attachment instance. Nevertheless it's missing in the API document [2]. Adding a intuitive hint would be highly appreciated. Thanks. Using Ovirt Java SDK for VM automation ..
