Hi !! I have a Windows 7 VM with spice protocol with usb redirection enabled but I cannot access to e.g. to a pendrive. It's already supported this feature ? Regards.- -- AGD

Thanks to Tim Hildred, I found out about the need to have a directory server. Before I embark on this path, I thought I could ping the community to get a since for what is common, easy, and/or available to best suit our wants. First, what's the easiest one to setup and use? Something with a simple GUI would be desirable: a webmin module perhaps? Most ideal would be something that is in line with our desire to move towards single sign on, ultimately authenticating against Google Apps. Does Google provide something supported? Is there something that can proxy google apps auth to an oVirt supported protocol? Alternately, we have an LDAP server, but it does NOT store passwords, and as such, does not provide authentication for anything. Will oVirt store passwords for users created from such an LDAP service, or does LDAP need to be the authority as well? Finally, we also have NIS setup (thought we hope to get away from that soon), so some means of authenticating through the systems local PAM system would be the next most convenient. [Users] Failed to import Vm host to ovirt

While trying to import a virtual machine I got very generic error message in the web interface "Failed to import Vm host to ovirt", in the engine.log I got this java exception below. After doing some digging I realized the problem was I did not map the network bridge names from my previous machine to the bridge name used on the current machine. After modifing the master/vms/e94464d3-ae44-45ac-b09b-0e17f784a378/e94464d3-ae44-45ac-b09b-0e17f784a378.ovf file and updating the references to the bridge name the import worked as expected. Could more information be added to the error message to indicate the source of the problem? I'm currently setting up an ovirt cluster and so far it looks good. I like the integration with Foreman http://theforeman.org/ . I would like to use Ceph / rbd for my storage. I saw some mention of patches coming in May, but I did not find any new posts. What is the status of this work? Is there some patches I can try out? I have a working Ceph cluster and a working ovirt cluster, I just need a way to bring them together. Thanks, JOSH

Hello again, to install my VMs, I create them without CDROM and booting firstly from the HD. Then I go and choose "Run Once" and choose the ISO I want to use and boot from CDROM, on boot options. After installing the OS, I reboot and the first boot is again the CDROM. I have to shutdown the VM so the configuration chosen with HD being the first boot option is again the default. Alex

I was trying to use both the rest api to view a user's vm information. I found that the REST APIs always returned an authentication error if the account I had logged into was not an ovirt administrator. I am guessing that either (a) I am using the wrong URL in the REST api or (b) you must be some kind of admin to access the REST APIs. I noticed the same behavior when I was using the ovirt-shell tool. For example, I was trying to follow the instructions in http://wiki.ovirt.org/wiki/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_Without_Portal to get the list of VMs (presumably for the user that is logging in), I get an unauthorized error. If the user account I login with in the curl or ovirt-shell connect statement is an admin, I get the list of VMs. So my question here is does the REST-API need admin privileges or am I using a url that requires admin privileges whereas some others don't. And if it is the latter, is there somewhere that documents the various rest api resources? For example, to go back to the "How to connect to Spice console ..." article, how would one use the REST API to fetch one's virtual machines, their status, and connection info for them? However I have noted that with a Native Windows install and the Activex Remote Viewer version 0.5.3 that alot of guests have mouse issues w/o spice vdagent or the windows spice agent in place (very annoying during LFC guests with no knowledge of "spice mice"). Windows installs can be slipstreamed with the spice drivers to fix this but thats really a pain. Linux guests however not as easy. This actually seems to a repeat of this issue: http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2012-February/000351.html (for which a fix was applied to windows spicec + activex NOT remote-viewer) possible regression? Using the usbtablet custom vdsm hook does indeed solve issues with guests that encounter this issue. I have noted it within older linux guests (no surprise they know nothing of a spice mouse), windows guests, solaris guests, some of the older opensuse and ubuntu as well as fedora. The most confusing one was RHEL 6.x which without the spice vdagent loaded will experience the cursor jumping in and out of the window or randomly on the spice display. I note the one downside of the usbtablet is that power users are able to view custom hooks in the PUP UI, but cannot set them as only the "admin role" not "user role" can do this. However I have noted that with a Native Windows install and the Activex Remote Viewer version 0.5.3 that alot of guests have mouse issues w/o spice vdagent or the windows spice agent in place (very annoying during LFC guests with no knowledge of "spice mice"). Windows installs can be slipstreamed with the spice drivers to fix this but thats really a pain. Linux guests however not as easy. This actually seems to a repeat of this issue: http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2012-February/000351.html (for which a fix was applied to windows spicec + activex NOT remote-viewer) possible regression? Using the usbtablet custom vdsm hook does indeed solve issues with guests that encounter this issue. I have noted it within older linux guests (no surprise they know nothing of a spice mouse), windows guests, solaris guests, some of the older opensuse and ubuntu as well as fedora. The most confusing one was RHEL 6.x which without the spice vdagent loaded will experience the cursor jumping in and out of the window or randomly on the spice display. I note the one downside of the usbtablet is that power users are able to view custom hooks in the PUP UI, but cannot set them as only the "admin role" not "user role" can do this. Hello all, first post here :-) When using VNC as the console to access the VM I can't use the portuguese keyboard and see special characters. I tried it with VMs running Fedora, CentOS and Debian. If I ssh the VM, everything is correct on the terminal console. Is this a issue from oVirt or from the VNC server running behind (I guess it's the second). Any help? TYA Alex

I've been scouring through the install notes and the architecture documents but didn't find my answer. Is there a way to "cluster" or replicate the userportal app or is it strictly a single instance? Any thoughts to the scale of a large VDI system with 10,000 desktops and their VMs and how that impacts the ovirt-engine and the user-portal app? I figure it has been discussed, but using the word cluster in a google search of the wiki results in a lot of hits, none of them that I saw that are to do with clustering the server, just the virtual machine nodes. Hi list, I'm testing oVirt on 3 hosts as a possible replacement for Proxmox. I've some trouble to understand the network part of the config (for beginning, I'll have some other questions about glusterfs later :)) and need some lights. The environment : - Engine host, no-virtualisation capability, one NIC eth0 - 2 nodes, virtualisation OK, 2 NICs eth0,eth1 - oVirt 3.1 on CentOS 6.3. The installation of engine/nodes was OK, no problem at all on the 3 nodes. The NIC eth0 on all hosts was manually bound on a bridge "ovirtmgmt", respectively on 10.0.0.1, .2, .3 ovirmgmt appears on the console as the management network, no problem, just a first question : it is marked as "VM network", and no way to change that. What if I want that this network to be dedicated on physical hosts only ? Second, I tried to create a logical network, call it "vmnetwork", linked it to datacenter and cluster. In the network interface configuration window on the hosts, I can link vmnetwork on eth0, but when validating an error occurs saying that eth0 is already linked to ovirmgmt. So I can't have management network and vm network on the same NIC , even on a virtual nic (tried with vlan=0 and vlan=10 on vmnetwork, same thing) ? Third, is this a bug when I come back to the configuration window, that the networks (for ovirmgmt and vmnetwork) return to "DHCP" ? If I forgot to re-check the static network, the host lose all it's network config and is declared non-responsive then rebooted..... Bad ! Thank you for helping me to understand. Frank

Hello My first email on the mailing, I hope the first one of a longue serie. The email concerns a Network Card order issue for which I like to report a have your advises. I've made a template which contains 2 network cards, Each one bridge on different vlan network. When I create a VM from this template, the network card mac address assignation is random... so that by default my fedora assign eth0 to the smallest mac address, and so on for eth1/eth2 ... But no way to define network card order in template, so that sometime the smallest mac address is on eth0, sometime on eth1 (and in fact more often on eth1), sometime my VM works, sometime I have to destroy and recreate network interfaces. Is there a workaround or anything else ? Sorry to repost(kind of) but I'm really battling here and I need to get the VM's up and running again. I've given up on the idea of migrating the database across due to all sorts of problems encountered and I've instead done a completely NEW fresh ovirt-engine install and I've got one host added and running. How do I go about detaching my storage datacentre from my old ovirt-engine, and re-attaching it to my new ovirt-engine running on my new server? I'm running FC with multiple LUNS all assigned in one datacentre called "linux" and I can't detach it because it says "Cannot detach Storage Domain while VMs/Templates reside on it." My entire datacentre is in maintenance at the moment which consists of only 3 VM's(4TB's in total), my host only has a 16GB SDD in it, so exporting to a local NFS mount is not an option. Can I safely remove the VM's(as instructed above) by going to "VM's" and clicking remove and then will I be able to detach the datacentre and then re-attach it to the new ovirt-engine? Bearing in mind that I'm running a fresh install of ovirt-engine and I haven't copied the database across? Is it a matter of re-attaching the LUNS that are currently assigned because I can see the LUNS when I try and add a new FC storage domain, however the LUNS currently attached to the old ovirt-engine are greyed out and can't be selected. Hello, I've tried many times to run a node as a guest in ovirt following http://wiki.ovirt.org/wiki/Vdsm_Developers#Running_Node_as_guest_-_Nested_K… . The result is that I'm able to register such a host in engine, but it is impossible to start any vm on it. If I boot on an ISO, I can see the first prompt and move between the items. But since I begin the installation I have a blank screen and the vm goes into pause mode in vit-manager. Then I have no way else than rebooting the hypervisor guest because it is impossible to resume. Hi guys, Please could someone assist me. I'm trying to migrate my ovirt-engine(3.1 but very early release) to latest 3.1 on new machine(both Centos 6.3 dreyou repo). After the intial engine-setup I can log into webadmin without a problem. I then imported my DB from the old server (psql -U postgres -d engine -w < /root/dump.sql) and start the ovirt-engine again, but now when try and browse to the webadmin I don't get anything at all, no web page displays at all, I'm guessing that there are lots of additional steps that I'm missing, so perhaps this is normal. I haven't attached any logs etc because I'm fairly certain that I'm missing some vital steps before I can actually log into my system using the new DB. I've changed the hostname of the machine -- previous name was node02.blabla.com and now it's backup.blabla.com does this matter? My guess is the certificates won't work with the DB now, is there any way to get around this, or should I rather just use the same hostname on the new server? I also haven't copied any physical files or configs across yet, which files/folders do I need? I'm using a FC SAN so I'm assuming I won't need to export my VM's, it should just be a matter of detaching my main storage domain and then re-attaching it on the new server? I see when I try and detach from the old server it says "can't export while there are Templates/VM's on the system" must I hit the remove button on each VM on the old system in order to detach and then attach to on the new system? (presume it will only remove the VM's from the old system and not actually delete the VM image?) I'm using no templates, so I'm assuming these don't need to be exported/imported? Hi - I apologize in advance that this email is less about a specific problem and more a general inquiry as to the most recommended / likely-to-be-successful way path. I am on my third attempt to get an ovirt system up and running (using a collection of spare servers, that meet the requirements set out in the user guide). I'm looking to implement a viable evolution to the unscalable stove-piped ESXi servers (i.e. which are free). And while I'm happy to learn more about the underpinnings, I recognize that to really be a replacement for these VMWare solutions, this has to mostly "Just Work" -- and that's eventually why I've given up on previous occasions (after a couple days of work) and decided to revisit in 6 months. My basic server setup is: - oVirt Mgmt (engine) - oVirt HV1 (hypervisor node) - oVirt HV2 (hypervisor node) - oVirt Disk (NFS share) 1st attempt: I installed the latest stable Node image (2.5.1) on the HV1 and HV2 machines and re-installed the Mgmt server w/ Fedora 17 (64-bit) and all the latest stable engine packages. For the first time, Node installation and Engine setup all went flawlessly. But I could not mount the NFS shares. Upon deeper research, this appeared to be the bug mentioned about NFS; I was *sure* that the official stable Node image would have had a downgraded kernel, but apparently not :) I have no idea if there is an officially supported way to downgrade the kernel on the Node images; the warnings say that any changes will not persist, so I assume there is not. (I am frankly a little surprised that the official stable packages & ISO won't actually work to mount NFS shares, which is the recommended storage strategy and kinda critical to this thing!?) . FWIW, the oVirt Disk system is a CentOS 6.2 system. 2nd attempt: I re-installed the nodes as Fedora 17 boxes and downgraded the kernels to 3.4.6-2. Then I connected these from the Engine (specifying the root pw) and watched the logs while things installed. After reboot neither of the servers were reachable. Sitting in front of the console, I realized that networking was refusing to start; several errors printed to the console looked like: device-mapper: table: 253:??: multipath: error getting device (I don't remember exactly what was after the "253:") calling "multipath -ll" yielded no output, calling "multipath -r" re-issued the above errors Obviously the Engine did a lot of work there, setting up the bridge, etc. I did not spend a long time trying to untangle this. (In retrospect, I will go back and probably spend more time trying to track this down, but it's difficult since I lose network & have to stand at the console in the server room :)) 3rd attempt: I re-installed the nodes with Fedora 17 and attempted to install VDSM manually by RPM. Despite following the instructions to turn off ssl (ssl=false in /etc/vdsm/vdsm.conf), I am seeing SSL "unknown cert" errors from the python socket server with every attempt of the engine to talk to the node. I added the CA from the master into the /etc/pki/vdsm (since that was the commented-out path in the config file as the trust store) and added the server's cert here too, but have no idea what form these files should take to be respected by the python server -- or if they are respected at all. I couldn't find this documented anywhere, so I left the servers spewing logs for the weekend figuring that I'll either give up or try another strategy on Monday. So is there a general strategy that should get me to a working system here? I suspect that the Node image is not a good path, since it appears to be incompatible with NFS mounting. The Fedora-17-installed-by-engine sounds good, but there's a lot of magic there & it obviously completely broke my systems. Is that where I should focus my efforts? Should I ditch NFS storage and just try to get something working with local-only storage on the nodes? (Shared storage would be a primary motivation for moving to ovirt, though.) I am very excited for this to work for me someday. I think it has been frustrating to have such sparse (or outdated?) documentation and such fundamental problems/bugs/configuration challenges. I'm using pretty standard (Dell) commodity servers (SATA drives, simple RAID setups, etc.). Sorry for no log output, I can provide more of that when back at work on Monday, but this was more of a general inquiry on where I should plan to take this. Thanks in advance! Hans

Hi List, in my test lab the iSCSI SAN crashed and caused some mess. My cluster has 3 hosts running VMs. The SPM node was fenced and automatically shutdown due to the storage crash. All VMs running on the other 2 hosts were put to pause. I recovered the storage and powered on the fenced node. All VMs were restarted or coming back to live except one. Since this incident I am no longer able to start oder stop it. It is stuck in state "Not Responding" and it seems I cannot revive it anymore. The engine only provides the stop or shutdown operations, but none works. While I am not completely new to running instances in KVM/Qemu, I am a total noob when it comes to clustering. While I realize that not all of these questions pertain specifically to the oVirt project, I would much rather get input from people that have experience in this environment. I am in the process of designing my next server farm and would like to know some basics that I can't seem to find the answers to via google search. Background: I have a server farm setup for a large family. It consists of 9 servers (minimal-to-medium loads for the most part, but they are in poor condition physically). My hopes are to run this same setup virtually in a 3-node cluster. I can run the entire farm in a virtual environment on a host with a dual, quad-core box with 64gig RAM. That said, I know that each of these nodes will be capable of handling the entire load by itself if absolutely necessary. For disk space, my hopes are to use two drive arrays (10 configuration?) which I can build (up and out) from without having too much trouble. Everything will be fiber, including drops to the computers and televisions. Copper will exist as well for things like POE, printers, etc. (but not in scope) Questions: 1. As I understand it, a N-to-N configuration means that there will be load balancing between the nodes as well as failover. Is the load balancing something that is manual (I have to monitor/balance the load manually, or is it done automatically?) 2. If it is done automatically, how do the loads get split up? Is the virtual machine itself the unit of load that transfers from one node to another or does it go so far as balancing services running inside those virtual machines? 3. For the fail-over, is it seemless in the sense that the user's connections don't get reset or is there a short period of down-time before the service is available again? While this isn't a big issue for me, it is something that I've been wondering about. 4. Fibre channel or FCOE? (I've spent entire evenings trying to get a straight answer through google searches, but there seem to be way too many agendas). Being that one of the virtual servers will be a media server for the televisions (new addition), my worry is lag-time (I would like to serve at least 5 televisions without lag-time). The array will also support things like file server, space for about 2-dozen www (family pages (lots of pictures)), space for mail, space for backups (rSync,Amanda), ISO boots, etc. I have the logical and physical topology drawn up for the most part, but until I understand a bit more, I'm scared _less about dropping any money into the project because I've neither seen a setup like this in action, and what I find online seems a bit vague in the way of details (dumbed-down enough for the likes of me to know if the hardware I'm buying is necessary and/or sufficient to achieve my goals). First off, oVirt noob alert. That said, I have been able to figure out and over come most of my issues getting oVirt running on CentOS 6.3 the various documentation that is available, including this list's archives for the last few months. (Side question: I haven't found a good way to search the archives short of using site: within google search, but that does not seem to work so well, so I have been relying on gmail's collection of the messages since I subscribed a few months ago. Is there a better way?) Anyway, this one seems like it should be so simple that I feel like I must be missing some thing painfully obvious. That is, I don't seem to be able to create a user. The GUI's add button on the user tab just lets me search existing users, but does not provide anywhere to enter new user info. I have successfully "added" the admin@internal user several times while bumbling around with that interface, but this is not terribly helpful since it has always been there. To what I have added it, I am am not entirely clear. I don't see anything in the getting started guide, and the administrator guide just walks me through the same useless steps I mentioned above in the user tab. Any nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Hi all, I was working through the installation of ovirt-engine today (after spending more time than I care to admit struggling with networking & DNS issues - VPNs, dnsmasq, "classic" network start-up and iptables/firewall rules can interract with each other in strange and surprising ways). Anyway - I went through the engine set-up successfully, and got the expected message at the end: "**** Installation completed successfully ******" with a message to visit the engine web application to finish set-up. I increased the kernel's SHMMAX, and engine-cleanup worked correctly. Has anyone else experienced this issue? When I re-run engine-setup, I also got stuck when reconfiguring NFS - when engine-setup asked me if I wanted to configure the NFS domain, I said "yes", but then it refused to accept my input of "/mnt/iso" since it was already in /etc/exports - perhaps engine-cleanup should also remove ISO shares managed by ovirt-engine, or else handle more gracefully when someone enters an existing export? The only fix I found was to interrupt and restart the engine set-up. Also, I have no idea whether allowing oVirt to manage iptables will keep any extra rules I have added (specifically for DNS services on port 53 UDP) which I added to the iptables config. I didn't take the risk of allowing it to reconfigure iptables the second time. After all that, I got an error when starting the JBoss service: > Starting JBoss Service... Hello all, we are currently in the process of evaluating oVirt as a basis for our new virutalization environment. As far as our evaluation has processed it seems to be the way to go, but when testing the high availability features I ran into a serious problem: Our testing setup looks like this: 2 hosts on Dell R210 and R210II machines, a seperate machine running the managing application in JBoss and providing storage space through NFS. Under normal conditions everything works fine: I can migrate machines between the two nodes, I can add a third node, access everything by VNC, monitor the VMs really nicely, the power management feature of the R210s work just fine. Then, when simulating the loss of a host by pulling the plug on the machine, (yes, that is kind of a crude check) some things seem to go terribly wrong: the system detects the host being unresponsive and assumes it is down. But the host happens to be the SPM and the other does not take over this function. This leaves the hole cluster in an unresponseive state and my datacenter is gone. Than the responsive node takes over and the VMs are being migrated, too. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is this by design and killing off the SPM is a bad coincident and always requires manual intervention? Hi List, I have been reading the list for quite sometime and I have a question because I can't find the problem myself. I have an oVirt-3.1 setup with 3 nodes (Fed17 install from LiveCD + vdsm) and an engine install. Sofar this all works. Can create VM's, can migrate them, no problems ( well one but thats for another post, vdsmd doesn't start at system start). Hi, everyone, if it's not the right mail list, pls point out.. thanks.. I am trying to install the ovirt on my Xeon E5-2650 process on Dell server, which is installed with Fedora 17. While I create a new host , which actually is the same server as overt-engine is running. The host is created ,and starting to "installing". But it ends with "Non operational state". Error: Host CPU type is not compatible with cluster properties, missing CPU feature: model_sandybridge. But in my cluster, I select "sandybridge" CPU, and my Xeon C5 is also in Sandy bridge family. And also this error lead my server reboot. Any help is appreciated. Btw: I have enable INTEL-VT in BIOS. And modprobe KVM and kvm-intel modules. . attached is screen shot for error.

Here is the message and the logs again except zipped I failed the first delivery: Ok here are the logs 4 node and 1 engine log. Tried making /data folder owned by root and then tried by 36:36 neither worked. Name of volume is data to match folders on nodes also.
