oVirt Updates - Special KVM Forum/oVirt edition

A great week at linuxcon/cloudopen/kvmforum/ovirt conference at Edinburgh, and some other nice feedback on oVirt, meriting a special edition of this update. Feel free to chime in with your feedback as well. It is sometimes hard to remember we only released oVirt 3.0 last year, and that it takes time to get traction. For example, see slide 3 in the presentation i gave on oVirt Updates[1] to see the clear trend in adoption (via total users mailing list addresses). Similarly, in Livnat's oVirt-intro session at CloudOpen, with ~75 people in the room, almost all raised their hand on her question "who knows/has oVirt". We had a plethora of topics (same link as [1]), but i wanted to highlight: SUSE support During Livnat's talk, a question was raised wrt SUSE support. Asking for more details, we got ~"I'm running oVirt in testing and RHEV in production. with 200 SUSE 10/11 servers. I just want the guest-agent to have their ip address in the gui". So first of all, good to know SUSE runs as a guest without issues. Also, the guest-agent itself is just a python script that should just work. Just some packaging is required, so we're looking to revamp this in build.opensuse.org, and hope some SUSE users will help us with closing and testing this one. In related SUSE news, I just saw this posted "After looking into oVirt it looks absolutely fantastic. Might look into seeing if I can help with porting this to openSUSE. What kind of work is involved in the porting of the application like this?" (discussion ongoing) on PPC: Leonardo from the Eldorado research center in Brazil gave a lecture on their work to add PPC support to oVirt. Paul Mackerras (KVM PPC developer) from IBM and Alexenader Graf attended and gave a lot of feedback, and potential interest from other PPC vendors, which should be hopefully mostly config level changes. User Stories: Keele university presented their path to oVirt. Always nice to hear how our project is used, and we actually asked them a lot of questions on why/how they use it the way they do. They also did a case study with Dave Neary, which i hope to see more from oVirt community members. Also, always nice to hear: in an irc chat on #ovirt: "I looked at ovirt about 4 months ago and when I came back a few days ago I was blown away at how far it had come! The devs have done an awesome job". oVirt 3.3.1 Beta now available

Release notes for this update are still being worked on, but information on the changes can be found on the wiki[1]. A new oVirt Node build will be available soon as well. oVirt 3.3.0.1 Update Release now available

The oVirt Team is pleased to announce the availability of the 3.3.0.1 Update Release. This release fixes a number of issues with the 3.3.0 release. If you have encountered this bug, you would have to manually find the affected VMs with psql -U engine -d engine -c "select distinct vm_name from vm_static, vm_device where vm_guid=vm_id and device='cdrom' and address ilike '%pci%';" and remove their junk cdrom address with psql -U engine -d engine -c "update vm_device set address='' where device='cdrom' and address ilike '%pci%';" """ A vdsm bug introduced in a specific case of disk resize (raw on nfs) accidentally wipes the content of the virtual disk. Awesome. Dave can you have someone edit the installation page and specifically mention that EL hypervisors don't have native Gluster (fuse only) support - It would be very frustrating to think you can have all the features, and OS stability as well, only to find out EL doesn't support a key feature. Summer vacations and holidays, but many updates... Conferences/Talks - Greg Padget will cover the new sla mechanism in ovirt at LinuxCon/CloudOpen NA (September 17th, New Orleans) - a lot of sessions around linuxcon europe/kvm forum. also, the annual developer summit. oVirt Node 3.0.1 Release

Hey, oVirt Node 3.0.1 has been released [0] and can be downloaded [1]. 3.0.1 is the first bug fix release after the major 3.0.0 release. You might notice that there was no release email for the 3.0.0 release, so let us shed some light on that release. What changed? ovirt-node-3.0.0 was a major release which brought some major changes. One important change is, that Node is now an "universal image" [2]. The base Node images (for Fedora 19 and EL6) do _not_ contain any specific VDSM bits anymore and can _not_ be used directly with oVirt Engine. The VDSM specific parts got extracted and can be found in the ovirt-node-plugin-vdsm [3][4]. For convenience we plan to provide additional images containing the VDSM plugin which will make the images ready to use with oVirt Engine. For this release we need to delay the release of the VDSM images due to some last-minute bugs. There are also many more new features in 3.0 [0][5]: * Universal Image - Remove VDSM specific bits to make the image more general (an VDSM image is still provided) * Improved upgrade tool * Software iSCSI root * Puppet configuration management (plugin) * Bridegeless Networking * NIC Bonds * New installer TUI * IPv6 support in the setup TUI * Diagnostics page in the setup TUI * Images for Fedora 19 and EL6 Let us know [6][7] if you found an issue, miss something which should be part of Node or would like to use Node in your project. oVirt 3.3 Release update

Final RC builds have been posted to the beta repos on ovirt.org. The current scheduled release for 3.3 is set for Monday assuming no critical blocker issues are found before then. If you picked up beta packages prior to Thursday at approximately 11 AM EDT (15:00 UTC), there is a new ovirt-engine package that fixes a single security issue [1][2]. oVirt Engine 3.2 Async Update due to security issue

A new version of oVirt Engine 3.2 was released today to deal with security bug 1007482 [1]. A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw was found in oVirt Engine An attacker could construct a carefully-crafted URL, which once visited by an unsuspecting user, could cause the user's web browser to execute malicious script in the context the of oVirt Engine domain. (some updates I collected from past weeks) General: - great oVirt 3.3 test day with 80 bugs reported on various new 3.3 features. - oVirt 3.3 RC build soon to come. - various deep dive sessions started on new 3.3 features[9] glance, neutron, power management and async tasks covered so far. Deployment: - Karli Sjöberg documented the process of going from oVirt-3.1 on Fedora to oVirt-3.2 on CentOS[3] - René Koch announced version 1.2.1 of the Nagios monitoring plugin[6] - Christophe Fergeau announced[1] a new spice-xpi 2.8.90 with windows support (and proxy support as well) - Eyal Edri announced ovirt rpm's are available for Fedora 19[7] - René van der Linden blogged about configuring IPA for oVirt[12] also has entries on all of this oVirt deployment[13] Devel: - gerrit was upgraded to gerrit 2.6. during the upgrade I forgot David Caro work on replacing the robots file so bing servers overloaded the server again.
