Hi, The focus of our OPW internship program starting in December will be mobile and/or lightweight engine clients -- hopefully integrating the new ovirt.js project. I see that there are some already existing mobile clients for oVirt. I'm trying to grasp what we have and what the needs are. moVirt: https://github.com/matobet/moVirt (mbetak) This appears to be more of a lightweight webadmin. No console access, but I believe it's planned as part of OPW. (?) nomad: http://www.ovirt.org/Project_Proposal_-_Nomad and https://github.com/Vizuri/ovirt-nomad Looks dead -- last commit 3 years ago. Anyone know more about this one? That's all I see on the first few pages of google. When I think of a mobile client for oVirt, I think the most useful part would be the user portal -- simple operations for start, stop, and the ability to view the console of vms. moVirt mentions it wants to support some basic management operations, though. I think it would be difficult to do complex management in a mobile client. (I'm biased towards huge screens, though.) I'd like to see an official subproject started that coordinates our mobile efforts. Is this possible? What would it take to start it? What would people like to see in such an app? Migrating from Fedora 19 to Fedora 20 with oVirt 3.5.0

Hi, just finished testing migration path from F19 to F20 for systems running oVirt. F19 is going EOL one month after F21 release which is currently planned for December 2nd. If you're running oVirt on Fedora 19 I suggest you to do it once finished to upgrade oVirt to 3.5.0. Understanding Cluster / Datacenter upgrades

Hello, I seem to have some issues understating what and when something happens if I change a cluster or datacenter to a higher version after upgrading engine. Maybe somebody could help me understand how this works in general and when features will get enabled? If possible, pinpoint it to concrete features added in 3.5. My assumptions learned form experience so far, upgrading oVirt 3.4 to 3.5; please correct if wrong: - New features are enabled if I set the cluster compat version to a newer version after upgrade - Prior to upgrading a datacenter all cluster need to run the higher version (seems logical). - This involves Engine database updates (?) and, more crucial, it will change settings and data on the storage domains. - Because of that, downgrade is not possible any more - Also, its usually safer to keep the old cluster version while using a newer engine version; because it is more likely to run into regressions with an upgraded datacenter (see regression blockers for oVirt 3.5.1). My questions so far: - What happens if I only upgrade the cluster and *not* yet the datacenter? - In case of 3.5; exactly when could I have used the new NUMA management? I assume after upgrading the cluster? - In case of 3.5; exactly when could I have used the new QoS settings (like disk profiles) - here I assume after upgrading the datacenter? If the the case of NUMA policy is not true but happens only after upgrading the datacenter, what is the purpose of the cluster compat version setting? I can think of making sure a certain minimum VDSM version is running? ovirt-sdk get_subject() problem

Hi guys, I'm having a problem getting the value from the manager using vm.get_display().get_certificate().get_subject(): It happens on VM restart and what I get is: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_subject'. It happens only with get_subject() since I don't have a problem to get other values like vm address or display port. Moreover, the second attempt to query the certificate subject always succeeds... Is there a way to overcome this? We're using ovirt 3.1 and I've found the same issue here: http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/devel/2013-July/005221.html Thank you.

usage of the foreman / limitations of puppet

Hi, I just wanted to ask if there are some plans to also support other automation tools like salt, chef, cfengine or others, because puppet is imho not a good tool for large environments performance wise. I noticed there is some support for saltstack in foreman. So this seems to be a first step to extend the support for different configuration management tools. I know RH seems to favor puppet (it's used in the new satellite product) but I don't think it scales well (talking about thousands of hosts to manage). Hi, according to oVirt Release Process [1], a week after the n-1 release is out, a release criteria for the new release should be discussed. Release criteria will include MUST items and SHOULD items (held in wiki) MUST items will DELAY the release in any case. SHOULD items will include less critical flows and new features. SHOULD items will be handled as "best-effort" by component owners Component owners (e.g. Node, engine-core, vdsm) must ACK the criteria suggested. Release criteria discussions shouldn't take more then 2 weeks Progress on MUST items should be review every month, during the weekly meeting This means that starting today, we should define release criteria for November 12th. Hi, patch which removes oVirt logger was just merged. So in all your current and future patches for oVirt engine please use only slf4j as logging framework. Alon already posted some slf4j guidelines [1]. During logging refactoring we also started to quote parameter values in logging messages. Here are current "rules" for quoting: 1. Quote parameter values ONLY using single quote character 2. Quote non number attribute values 3. Don't quote primitive type numbers 4. Don't quote error messages, because they are the last part of message string after ':', so there's no need to quote 5. Don't quote strings which creates sentence of log message, for example log.info("Feature was {}", enabled ? "enabled" : "disabled"); 6. For the rest of cases use common sense :) Please feel free to write any comments to the quote guidelines. For example we may decide to alter "rule" 2. to not quote value which cannot be null or empty. Hi. I have got the same issue (filesystems read-only) when provisioning CentOS 6.5 as node host (installed base OS and added vdsm package). multipathd shows wwids file reaed-only. Cant't write wwid. Fore some reason filesystem gets corrupted when installing vdsm. Regards. This room will focus on collaboration between projects on common problems and software, such as shared storage, virtualized networking, interfacing with multiple hypervisors, and scaling across hundreds or thousands of servers. yappi rpm

As those of you that have been developing VDSM might know some time ago yappi profiling support was added to VDSM. This was a good idea but yappi has no fedora\el RPMs which forced each developer to find and download yappi from around the internet. Also, I personally don't like using disutils as there is no clean uninstall options (oddly enough). I am currently in the process of getting yappi into fedora. Using libgfapi on Gluster Storage Domains

Hi everyone, if you want to try and use the libgfapi support included in qemu when accessing volumes on gluster storage domains you can try to apply this patch: http://gerrit.ovirt.org/33768 As far as I know Jason Brooks already tried it and he reported a positive feedback. What has been tested so far is: - qemu uses libgfapi to access the disks on gluster storage domains - hotplug of disks on gluster storage domains works as expected (libgfapi) - hotunplug works as expected (no failure when removing a disk that is using libgfapi) - live snpashots work as expected - disks of vms started before this patch are not affected (they won't use libgfapi since there's no way to do an hot swap) One major flow that is yet untested is live storage migration. Remember that you may need to do some special configuration on your gluster volumes (most notably the allow-insecure ports option) as described here: http://www.ovirt.org/Features/GlusterFS_Storage_Domain Please try and test the patch if you're interested and report your feedback. Hi, I might be totally mistaken, so please tell me first if I understand the process: when vdsm imports a template from an export domain to local storage, according to my "ps" output, vdsm copies sparse templates using "dd": vdsm 14378 0.3 0.0 59032 4424 ? D< 15:14 0:00 \_ /bin/dd iflag=direct if=/rhev/data-center/mnt/$REDACTED:_home_iso/e7b8f2e2-b9f7-493c-96b5-33bfb091d0ba/dom_md/metadata bs=4096 count=1 If this is correct I have some questions regarding this behaviour: I understand that "dd" is "rock solid" works everywhere and for maybe every storage/format combination and thus was maybe chosen to do the work. But if I'm right and I have a 100 GB sparse disk which actually uses just 1 GB "dd" will copy the whole 100 GB over network, which is really not efficient at all. So here's my proposal (if I do not have any mistakes in the above): at least make a: tar -cpSvf disk.tar /path/to/disk and than "dd" this over the network, because tar _can_ handle sparse files. Of course any other more efficient mechanism would be okay too. If my observation is right, and the project think it's worth to implement such a thing I would create an RFE for this and I also would like to help code this (in my leisure time).
