Can´t use a VM Network VLAN, because the Virtual Machines inside can't reach the Gateway

Hi Friends of oVirt I'm trying to migrate my company from VMware to oVirt. In my final tests, I set up 2 more VLANs in oVirt, (VM VLANs) The Virtual Machines in these VLANs, can be reached from the external IPs from the net range, but from the Virtual machines only can ping the Host with the Bridge and itself, can't reach the gateway. ¿? I configured a IP Forwarding in the Host with the virtual machine, and nothing changes... Any idea ? This is the last duty before embrace oVirt in the company. Foreman: Add external provider (Failed with error PROVIDER_FAILURE and code 5050)

Hello, did anyone actually get this working in oVirt 3.5 / EL6 - Engine? I am trying this for two days now. Setup: Engine; EL6.5 Foreman; EL6.5 Foreman seems to do it's as I can use it to deploy hosts and also smart proxies are running fine. I have opened a BZ [1]; because this really can not work out of the box with EL6 plain vanilla packages. I wonder if this was ever tested... ? Java 7 used i n EL6 [4] does only support DH keys up to 1024byte. This is known issue in Foreman [2] as longer DH keys are now used by default in Foreman / PuppetCA. A dirty fix confirmed working is adding default DH parameters to the foreman cert; effectively disabling it [3]. So I got SSL working and I get beyond the authentication (entering wrong data gets me auth errors)- however, I am still not able to add the external provider. Pressing 'test' results in (Failed with error PROVIDER_FAILURE and code 5050) Sample engine.log 2014-10-28 23:49:40,860 ERROR [org.ovirt.engine.core.bll.provider.TestProviderConnectivityCommand] (ajp--127.0.0.1-8702-1) [6a3da4e7] Command org.ovirt.engine.core.bll.provider.TestProviderConnectivityCommand throw Vdc Bll exception. With error message VdcBLLException: PROVIDER_FAILURE (Failed with error PROVIDER_FAILURE and code 5050) I can't find any more hints in oVirt; access logs in Foreman are telling me API queries by the engine. Did I miss a crucial step in the foreman setup? How can I debug this issue? I am willing to upgrade openjdk; provided this does not break my engine... Thanks! vlan-tagging on non-tagged network

Hi everybody! I am experiencing a behaviour of ovirt, of which I don't know whether it is expected or not. My setup is as follows: A virtual machine has a logical network attached to it, which is configured without vlan-tagging and listens to the name 'trunk'. The VM is running an openvpn server. It is a patched openvpn version, including vlan-tagging. That is, openvpn clients get a vlan tag. This should not really be an issue but should satisfy the "why do you want to do it in the first place"-questions. Anyhow, effectively, the VM simply puts vlan-tagged ethernet-frames on the virtual network. These frames, however, never make it to the host's network bridge, which represents the logical network. My observations are: According to tcpdump, the vlan-tagged packages arrive at the "eth1"-interface inside the VM (which *is* the correct interface). Again, according to tcpdump, these packages never arrive at the corresponding network-bridge (i.e., the interface 'trunk') on the host. I know that the setup itself is feasible with KVM---I have it working on a proxmox-machine. Therefore, my conclusion is, that ovirt doesn't like vlan-tagged ethernet-frames on non-tagged logical networks, and somehow filters them out, though I don't really see on what "level" that would happen (Handling the ethernet frames should be a concern of KVM/QEMU/Linux only, once ovirt has started the VM). So this problem could be a CentOS issue, but I really don't see why CentOS should act differently than debian does (proxmox is debian-based). Is this a known/wanted/expected behaviour of ovirt, and can I somehow prevent or elude it? Any help is much appreciated! problem with iSCSI/multipath.

Hi all. We have an oVirt cluster in production happily running from the beginning of 2014. It started as 3.3 beta and now is Version 3.4.4-1.el6 . Shared storage provided by an HP P2000 G3 iSCSI MSA. The storage server is fully redundant (2 controllers, dual port disks, 4 iscsi connections per controller) and so is the connectivity (two switches, multiple ethernet cards per server). >From now on lets only talk about iSCSI connectivity. The two oldest server have 2 nics each; they have been configured "by hand" setting routes aimed to reach every scsi target from every nic. On the "new" server we installed ovirt 3.5 to have a look at the network configuration provided by oVirt. In Data Center -> iSCSI Multipathing we defined an iSCSI Bond binding together 3 server's nics and the 8 nics of the MSA. The result is a system that has been functioning for months. Recently we had to do an upgrade of the storage firmware. This activity uploads the firmware to one of the MSA controllers then reboots it. Being successful this is repeated on the other controller. There is an impact on the I/O performance but there should be no problems as every "volume" on the MSA remains visible on other paths. Well, that's the theory. On the two "hand configured" hosts we had no significant problems. On the 3.5 host VMs started to migrate due to storage problems then the situation got worse and it took more than an hour to bring again the system to a good operating level. I am inclined to believe that the culprit is the server's routing table. Seems to me that the oVirt generated one is too simplistic and prone to problems in case of connectivity loss (as in our situation or when you have to reboot one of the switches). Anyone on this list with strong experience on similar setup? I have included below some background information. I'm available to provide anything useful to further investigate the case. Gluster Replica 3 using arbiter node?

Hi, Just wondering if it will be possible to create gluster replica 3 volumes in oVirt 3.6 that use the arbiter function instead of actually storing three copies of the data? If so, could this be used for the hosted engine on gluster feature which from what I can tell requires replica 3? Many thanks, Adrian

Ubuntu guest doesn't reboot properly

I have an Ubuntu 14.04 guest (actually Zentyal server). Guest additions are installed from respository (and even displays the extra info like IP address, host name, memory use) in the oVirt dash board. Whenever I either reboot the guest or shut it down, it never seems to come up properly. It shows that it is powered on and it responds to ping, but I cannot SSH in (says connection refused). The SPICE console display just shows black with some slightly coloured bars in the upper left of the screen, so I am unable to determine what stage of the boot process it is on and/or if it is even at a login screen. I have a Windows 7 guest VM that reboots with no issue. I currently do not have another Linux guest VM to test with, but I plan on installing a Debian guest, CentOS guest, as well as a "vanilla" Ubuntu 14.04 guest to see if it is a Linux thing, and Ubuntu thing, or just something odd with the Zentyal spin of Ubuntu. I will report on my results (it may take a bit), but I wanted to check here to see if anyone else has already troubleshot this and what the findings and conclusions were? Thanks! :-) -Alan

VM Live Backup

Dear All, One feature that I am really missing in oVirt is a foolproof (i.e., in a way that even I will be able to implement) scheduled (cron would be good) live VM backup that outputs ideally qcow2 files per disk plus an xml-configuration file that one could upload to a regular KVM host, in case that should be required. As far as I understand, that is not yet on the roadmap, correct? For my plain SOHO KVM hosts, I am using a script to do just that. While I almost never need the backups - files with a human readable text name which I know how to use on any freshly installed KVM host in case of a crash emergency -, I feel better keeping them available for some time period. Testing Ovirt 3.6

Hi, I have installed ovirt 3.6 hosted-engine on Fedora22 for test. using NFS4 as storage for the vm engine, vms, iso and export. I am using ovirt-release-master repository I have some problems 1 - the VM engine is not showing up on the webgui. 2 - I cannot start a VM after it's creation, I get an error about a failed connection to DB, in the engine's error log I have an exception about a none existant function 'gethostnetworksbycluster'. 3 - I couldn't import my old export domain 4 - I couldn't import my old vm domain. thanks in advance.

Data Center becomes Non Responsive when I reboot a host

Hello ovirt users, I have 4 hosts with a distributed replicated 2x2 GlusterFS storage. (oVirt3.5/CentOS7) When I reboot a host (in maintenance mode and not my SPM host) my Data Center becomes "Non Responsive", my storage becomes red and inactive, and many VMs become "paused due to unknown storage error". The same happens if I administratively set ovirtmgmt network down (to a host in maintenance mode and not my SPM host) with ifconfig ovirtmgmt down. I know that management network (ovirtmgmt) is required by default and is part of oVirt monitoring process but is there anything I can do in order to reboot a host without causing this mess? Poor guest write speeds

I created a Windows 7 guest, and I am finding its write speeds to be horrible. It is a VirtIO-SCSI drive and the guest additions are installed. The installation of the OS took way longer than bare metal or even VMware. When I ran Windows updates, it again took a *lot* longer than on bar metal or on VMware. The read speeds seem to be fine. The guest is responsive when I click on programs and they open about as fast as bare metal or VMware. I downloaded and ran "Parkdale" HDD tester and ran a test with the following settings: - File size: 4000 - Block Size: 1 MByte The results are as follows: - Seq. Write Speed: 10.7 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) - Seq. Read Speed: 237.3 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) I ran another test, but this time changing the "Block Size" to "64 kByte [Windows Default]". Results are as follows: - Seq. Write Speed: 10.7 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) - Seq. CPU family: which should I choose?

Hello, I am a bit confused about the CPU families. When I installed my host, it prompted me for the CPU family to use, and gave me a list of CPU models to choose from. I chose the default suggestion, model_SandyBridge. I don't recall all the choices it gave me offhand, but when I run ' vdsClient -s 0 getVdsCaps | grep -i flags ; echo -e -n "\n" ;cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "model name" | head -n 1', it indicates the following models detected: model_Nehalem model_Conroe model_coreduo model_core2duo model_Penryn model_Westmere model_n270 model_SandyBridge Which one would provide the most compatibility? Is there a list of CPU family "hierarchies" which would indicate what model(s) could fit with what? Thanks! :-) -Alan

Storage network question

If I am using a NIC on my host on the storage network to access storage (NFS, iSCSI, Gluster, etc.), is there any issue with allowing VMs to be assigned to it so they can access the same storage network? (the VMs would have a NIC added specifically for this, of course) Basically, unlike in VMware and Hyper-V, in oVirt can the same NIC be used for host and VM access to the storage network?
