OVN provider's firewalld services deployment during engine setup

Hey, We're trying to come up with a way to deploy OVN provider's firewalld services during engine setup. The naive solution of querying the user during customization and then installing during STAGE_PACKAGES fails as firewalld configuration happens prior to it. We thought of a couple of possible solutions we'd like your opinions on (ordered in perceived level of difficulty): 1) Ship/require the packages with ovirt-engine without requiring user input. This essentially couples engine with OVN and disregards a future where OVN doesn't run alongside Engine. 2) Install the packages immediately following user input during customization. A bit hacky and doesn't conceptually fit the stage of customization. 3) Move user input to STAGE_INTERNAL_PACKAGES. Feels more disruptive than #1 to the current otopi flow as STAGE_INTERNAL_PACKAGES is dedicated for packages that are required for otopi itself to operate. Not only this doesn't fit conceptually, it introduces user input to a stage that shouldn't have any. 4) Move firewalld configuration to happen after STAGE_PACKAGES. 5) Refactor to prepare the grounds for OVN/Engine separation. At this point this feels very ambiguous. We don't yet know how will containers be accessed (is ssh guaranteed?) in the future or generally how should a remote installation look like. New design for the Gerrit UI

Vdsm dependency on GlusterFS 3.10

Help understanding the conflict with libvirt-guests.service - gerrit patch 78693

Hi, I am kindly asking for help with understanding the origin of conflict within the *libvirt-guests*.service and *vdsmd.service*. Explanation: I am working on a graceful VM shutdown as described by the feature in a Bugzilla https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1334982. One way (the simplest one as described in the Bugzilla) of achieving the required functionality is to utilize *"libvirt-guests.service"*, which does exactly what is required. The second option is to write a new service that does the shutdown and utilizes the *vdsm.* Since I am new, I do not know what is the best solution. Staying with the fist one I have discovered an old conflict between *"vdsmd.service" *and *"libvirt-guests.service"* explained in bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720359. <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720359> I have tried to reproduce described scenario and found that it is no longer an issue. Therefore I have created a *proposal draft* patch to start a discussion, whether it is really needed or not. Further, the research in git history showed this conflict precedes the git history, effectively blocking me in understanding details. Does somebody know about this issue? patch granularity, extracting patches

Do we have or follow a standard on patch granularity? When I started, I picked up on the culture that we do small, logical commits -- as much as possible, each commit should be focused on a specific purpose. I've perceived some reviewers prefer to have all orthogonal changes (fix a random spelling error, remove a duplicate semicolon) extracted to other patches for clarity. Others don't seem to mind. I feel like I always want to ask, but I feel bad because it's a hassle. Also, when you are asked to extract something, do you have a trick to make it as easy as possible? moVirt 2.0 RC 1 released!

The main feature of this release is a support for managing multiple oVirt installations from one moVirt. [Lago][HC] tuned service fails to start on one of HC hosts

Outage in network affecting oVirt services

OST failing in 004_basic_sanity add_filter_parameter

Hello! After pull last master branch of ovirt_system_tests 004 test fails in add_filter_parameter in basic-suite-master with error: AttributeError: 'VmNicService' object has no attribute 'network_filter_parameters_service' After first running fail I updated all yum packages using yum upgrade, updated lago, lago-ovirt, ovirt-sdk-python using pip install --upgrade. And I have next version of this packages: lago (0.39.0), lago-ovirt (0.41.0) ovirt-engine-sdk-python (4.1.5) But error is still open. (I run ./run_suilte without -s. and it should update internal repo) Do I forget to update something else? Sincerely, Valentina Makarova

[RFC] VM thread pinning for High Performance

Hey list, As a part of High Performance VMs feature [1], the oVirt virt team is planning to introduce a fine grained CPU pinning control for various VM threads (vcpu, io, emulator). Current idea for the pinning is to allow per-host configuration of the number of CPUs per numa node to be reserved for io+emulator threads. If we assume that the reservation will be done by 'reserved_cpus' variable, let's use this as an example: reserved_cpus = [0, 1] Such configuration would imply that 2 cores, 0th and 1st in each numa node may be used for io+emulator thread. Additional logic is required to avoid wasting these cores if single machine spans >1 numa node, roughly if numa_node where vcpu0 contains reserved_cpus: pin io/emulator thread to reserved_cpus else: reserve reserved_cpus in numa_node with vcpu0 pin io/emulator thread to reserved_cpus Such logic won't waste extra vcpus for large VMs. Any comments on the idea are more than welcome! Hi all, there is a patch [1] removing `AppErrors.properties` from webadmin project to simplify edits of AppErrors/EngineMessage. AppErrors.properties from webadmin project will be merged to AppErrors.properties in frontend project. This requires some manual resolutions of conflicts of translation values. rounding microseconds in vm conf update

Hello! Ovirt sdk process updating of vm template with rounding of microseconds in creation_time. And vm is marked as vm which has a newer configuration because of this, but there is not a new configuration, all difference between current configuration and next_run configuration is creation_time. It is not correct. Lowering the bar for wiki contribution?

I'm getting the feeling I'm not alone in this, authoring and publishing a wiki page isn't as used to be for long time. I want to suggest a bit lighter workflow: 1. Everyone can merge their page - (it's a wiki) Same as with (public and open) code, no one has the motivation to publish a badly written wiki page under their name. True, it can have an impact, but not as with broken code 2. Use Page-Status marker The author first merges the draft. Its now out there and should be updated as time goes and its status is DRAFT. Maintainers will come later and after review would change the status to PUBLISH. That could be a header in on the page: --- page status: DRAFT/PUBLISH --- Simple I think, and should work.

dnf issue on FC24/25 slaves

Today we have encountered a dnf issue on all of our FC24/25 slaves. It affected all Jenkins jobs that are running on these slaves. If you see this error message: *system-python: /builddir/build/BUILD/hawkey-0.6.3/src/sack.c:354: load_ext: Assertion `ret == 0' failed* please be patient. We are working to solve this issue in the next couple of minutes. It was basically a fedora mirror issue. They have a bug on it but looks like they have already fixed it. Thanks Gil

The solution for this problem is to enable the updates in the /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo file. I also see that the base repo is also disabled. Hi all, I've merged patches to change the legacy name "VdcAction*" to "Action*", the Vdc prefix is here from long time ago and doesn't make much sense anymore (if it ever did). Please make sure you rebase your patches before submitting and make sure CI passes again even if it passed before rebasing. Changed classes are: VdcActionType -> ActionType VdcActionTypeDeserializer -> ActionTypeDeserializer VdcActionParametersBase -> ActionParametersBase VdcActionUtils -> ActionUtils Thanks for the reviewers that helped review those long and boring patches (amureini, masayah, frolland, ishaby, awels, gsheremeta, oourfali) Next up on my list is VdcQuery*, stay tuned :)

Heads up: Checkstyle is now enforcing blank lines between import groups in oVirt Engine

A couple of years ago commit a4f50e3b introduced a new checkstyle validation in oVirt Engine that enforces the order of the imports since some of the developers did not use the standards from the Engine code format and this caused a situation where some commits included aside for the actual code also a reformat of the imports that was unrelated to the patch. After the validation was added the situation got better but there were still no 100% alignment since the Engine code format also defines that there should be that there should be a blank line between the different import groups and this was not enforced, a fact that caused some patches to add lines and some remove lines between the imports. Today I've merged commit bf298fed that fixes all the imports as per the project standard and commit 1c6b710 that adds a checkstyle validation that enforces this change so note that from now on you should maintain that. You can add the code format which is located in Engine root under config/engine-code-format.xml to your IDE to have the imports arranged automatically.

But despite ovirt-release-master is enabling gluster 10 repositories[1], ovirt_master_hc-system-tests is consuming glusterfs 3.8.12[2] This jenkins job is therefore ineffective. UI Redesign patch has been merged.

Hi, I have just merged [1] which is a huge patch to update the look and feel of the webadmin UI to be more modern and based on Patternfly. I believe this is a huge step forward for the UI and should hopefully improve the usability and functionality of the UI (it certainly looks better). There are a bunch of follow up patches that once merged will make the UI look like [2]. It might take a few days for all of these patches to get into master. There are more enhancements planned to the usability of the UI as part of the overhaul process. As always, if there are any issues or comments let me know and I will be sure to address them ASAP. Removal of Export Storage Domain and virt-v2v

As you may know virt-v2v can use the Export Storage Domain (ESD) to upload converted virtual machines to oVirt. It was brought to my attention yesterday that the ESD feature is being dropped, so this will no longer work at some point in the future. (BTW I would appreciate notice if you're going to drop major features that we rely on.) Although virt-v2v can still work via the GUI, this isn't really suitable for bulk, scripted upload of hundreds or thousands of VMs. The ESD method was never very good. It was sort of an undocumented back door into oVirt, and it was slow, and still required manual intervention (after virt-v2v had done its job, you still needed to go through the GUI and import the guests into the Data Domain). What we really need is a fully scripted method to upload VMs -- metadata and disk images -- to oVirt. Maybe one exists already? If not, what's the best way to do this? GWT symbol maps are now installed with Engine, the "debuginfo" packages are out

Hello everyone, in master [1] and 4.1 [2] branches, meaningful (de-obfuscated) GWT/Java stack traces are now available right after Engine installation or upgrade. There's no need to install the complementary "debuginfo" packages anymore. In fact, those packages are removed now. (If installed, please remove them manually before upgrading Engine.) Who cares about 'memGuaranteedSize'?

Hi all, We have this field in the Vdsm API: - description: The amount of memory guaranteed to the VM in MB name: memGuaranteedSize type: uint Available in VmDefinition, VMFullInfo, VmParameters Vdsm dutifully records and reports this value - but doesn't use it. It is used exactly once for balloon stata: stats['balloonInfo'].update({ 'balloon_max': str(max_mem), 'balloon_min': str( int(vm.conf.get('memGuaranteedSize', '0')) * 1024), 'balloon_cur': str(balloon_cur), 'balloon_target': str(balloon_target) }) Now, a quick git grep in both MOM and Engine reveals no obvious usages.
