[ANN] oVirt 3.6.0 Second Alpha Release is now available for testing

The oVirt Project is pleased to announce the availability of the Second Alpha release of oVirt 3.6 for testing, as of June 29, 2015. oVirt is an open source alternative to VMware vSphere, and provides an excellent KVM management interface for multi-node virtualization. The Second Alpha release is available now for Fedora 20, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6, CentOS 6.6 (or similar) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1, CentOS 7.1 (or similar). The Second Alpha release can also be deployed on Hypervisor Hosts running Fedora 21 and Fedora 22. Experimental support for Debian 8.1 Jessie has been added too. This Second Alpha release of oVirt includes numerous bug fixes. See the release notes [1] for an initial list of the new features and bugs fixed. Upgrade to wildfly problem

Hi, I followed the upgrade to wildfly steps here [1]. And everything worked as expected. I was able to compile/run/update database without issues. But then the NetworkBootProtocol.forValue fails due to the possible values being "NONE", "DHCP", "STATIC". Looking at the stored procedure there doesn't seem to be any translation between 1 and DHCP, so it makes sense for the failure. I compared the stored procedure to a clean new database and they are identical, so I am assuming my database is fine in that regard. If I modify the code to use NetworkBootProtocol.forValue instead of valueOf it works fine, but the valueOf code has been in there for a long time so if that was broken it would have been noticed a long time ago. It seems like the engine depends on jasperreports (not jasperreports-server, needed by ovirt-reports - this one we package in ovirt repos). fyi, there is currently an outage with jenkins.ovirt.org, seems related to an out of memory issue. the infra team is investigating and will report when the issue is resolved. you might experience some errors or infra issues with jenkins jobs running on patches, if there is something urgent that can't wait for the fix, please let us know. we hope the issue can be resolved within the next hour. oVirt infra.

Merge patch "qemuimg: add support for convert progress"

qemu-img operations can take very long and there is currently no way to see their progress. It would be nice to include this patch to display the progress of a qemu-img operation (uploaded in November): https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/33910/ Canceling the qemu-img task from Engine is also something that should be addressed at some point. 'copyImage' tasks are displayed via vdsClient. Is there any particular reason why a "Cancel" button was never added to the Engine's Task list?

[VDSM] Live snapshot with ceph disks

Hi all, For 3.6, we will not support live vm snapshot, but this is a must for the next release. It is trivial to create a disk snapshot in ceph (using cinder apis). The snapshot is transparent to libvirt, qmeu and the guest os. However, we want to create a consistent snapshot, so you can revert to the disk snapshot and get a consistent file system state. We also want to create a complete vm snapshot, including all disks and vm memory. Libvirt and qemu provides that when given a new disk for the active layer, but when using ceph disk, we don't change the active layer - we continue to use the same disk. Since 1.2.5, libvirt provides virDomainFSFreeze and virDomainFSThaw: https://libvirt.org/hvsupport.html So here is possible flows (ignoring engine side stuff like locking vms and disks) Disk snapshot ------------- 1. Engine invoke VM.freezeFileSystems 2. Vdsm invokes libvirt.virDomainFSFreeze 3. Engine creates snapshot via cinder 4. Engine invokes VM.thawFileSystems 5. We'll keep building for Fedora 20 on the 3.5 branch since we don't support Wildfly there. Hi everyone, I'm working to brush up and enhance my old hack https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/37827/1 That patch adds a new MOM interface, to talk with VDSM using the RPC interface. On top of that, I want to make efficient use of VDSM API (avoid redundant call, possibly issuing only one getAllVmStats call and caching the results, and so forth) Next step will be to backport optimizations to current vdsmInterface. Or maybe, even replacing the new vdsminterface with the new one I'm developing :) I'd like to use the blessed JSON-RPC interface, but what's the recommended way to do that? What is (or will be!) the official recommended VDSM external client interface? Move to Jboss Wildfly - planned for Monday, June 22nd

Hi all! On Monday, June 22nd, 11:00 CET, we plan to drop JBoss 7.1 support in oVirt 3.6 and move to Jboss WildFly 8.2 (we're still doing final verifications, but it looks promising). This will allow us to support Fedora 22 properly, and in future versions to leverage some new and cool features. In addition, Jboss WildFly 8.2 works with OpenJDK 1.8 so you can easily use it for development on newer distributions where OpenJDK 1.7 is not available (Fedora 21 and 22, for example). When the patch [1] is merged, you will need WildFly 8.2 to be able to develop oVirt engine 3.6. Please use following guideline and update your development environment: I. Using WildFly 8.2 for oVirt 3.6 development 1. Hi, just a reminder that Fedora 20 end of life tomorrow[1]. We're still building rpms targeted to Fedora 20 and we still have servers running on Fedora 20 which won't receive security updates anymore. Infra please consider to upgrade / re-provision servers / slaves this week. Since oVirt 3.5 supports Fedora only up to Fedora 20 I think we'll have to continue building packages for it until 3.6 will be out. Hi, I would like to migrate a VM between two different ovirt installations with minimum down time. Using a export domain is slow (requires copying twice) and requires to stop the VM. It seems like the best option is to 1) create a snapshot, 2) transfer the backing chain images and OVF files to the destination storage domain 3) stop the VM, 4) transfer the active snapshot and 5) import the VM from the destination storage domain. Can you please comment and suggest other alternatives? Thanks.

Hi Nir, Regarding "3. Engine creates snapshot *via cinder*"... What are the benefits of creating snapshots via cinder vs via libvirt? Libvirt and qemu are offering core VM-aware storage and memory snapshot features. Besides, snapshot-create-as has no VM downtime. It would be a mistake to implement snapshoting on the ceph layer. At some point, you would need VM-aware code (eg: the VM memory state) and organically go back to the libvirt + qemu way. There seems to be qemu + libvirt support for ceph snapshots (via rbd commands) which probably offers some (?) VM-awareness, but what are the benefits of not using the good old core libvirt + qemu snapshot features? I must be missing something... 2) Not related: It seems like oVirt shifted focus towards Ceph recently... I would like to drop Gluster for Ceph if the latter supports SEEK HOLE reading and optimal sparse files operations. Can someone please confirm if Ceph is supporting SEEK_HOLE? I saw some related code, but would like to ask for comments before setting up and benchmarking Ceph sparse image file operations.

oVirt UI log records persisted in browser's local storage

Hi, with patches [1,2] merged recently into master branch, oVirt UI (WebAdmin and UserPortal) now persists client-side log records in browser's local storage [3] in addition to logging them via console.log API [4]. This means that client-side logs are kept in browser's storage between browser restarts, unless the user manually clears the storage. To inspect "localStorage" object in Firefox: * Menu / Developer / Toggle Tools * on Console tab, type "inspect(localStorage)" Client-side logs now use application-specific key prefix, e.g. "ENGINE_WebAdmin_MyKey" or "ENGINE_UserPortal_MyKey" to avoid clashes. For backwards compatibility (any existing items with un-prefixed keys), UI has a fallback to read the un-prefixed key when the prefixed one is missing. (Newly persisted items always use the key prefix.) In addition to changes above, any uncaught errors that originate from UI code are now properly caught and logged. This means that you shouldn't see uncaught JavaScript errors in browser's error console anymore. It will be the only flag that jenkins will set/unset and it c= an also be set by a maintainer. A +1 is required to enable the submit but a -1 will not block (so if jenkins -1 it and a maintainer +1 the +1 prevails). The permissions to the maintainers is added manually, that means that I mig= ht have messed some of them, if you have any issues ping me and I'll check. Libvirt secrets management - take 2

Hi all, Recently support for Ceph network disk landed in master. It its possible now to start a vm using Ceph network disk or hot-plug/unplug such disk using Cephx authentication. However, to make it work, you must add the relevant Ceph secret to libvirt manually, in the same way it is done in OpenStack deployment. Our goal is to manage secrets automatically and use ephemeral (safer) secrets. The next patches in the Ceph topic [1], implement secret management in the same way we manage storage domains or server connections: The concept is - all hosts can use all secrets, so you can migrate a vm using Ceph disk to any host in the cluster. 1. When host becomes up, we register the secrets associated with all the current active domains with libvirt 2. When activating a domain, we register the secrets associated with the new domain with libvirt 3. When deactivating a domain, we unregister the secrets associated with the domain from libvirt 4. When moving host to maintenance, we clear all secrets 5. When vdsm shutdown or starts, clear all secrets to ensure that we don't keep stale or unneeded secrets on a host This system seems to work, but Federico pointed few issues and suggested a new (simpler?) approach. In future libvirt version, libvirt will support the concept of transient secrets so you can start a transient vm using secret without registering the secret with libvirt before starting the vm. The secret will be specified in the vm XML (for starting a vm) or disk XML (for hot-plug). This will make our secret management system and APIs useless. Managing state on multiple hosts is hard; we will probably have to deal with nasty edge cases (e.g. lost messages, network errors), which may lead to host with missing secret, which cannot run some vms. We probably do this right for storage domains (after 8 years?), and we should not assume that we are smarter and secret management will work in the first try. The new approach is to *not* manage state or multiple hosts. Instead, send the required secrets only to the host that starting a vm or hot-plugging a disk that need a libvirt secret: 1. When starting a vm, add the required secrets to the vm description. On the host, vdsm will register these secrets with libvirt before starting the vm. 2. When migrating a vm, add the required secrets to the vm description. On the host, vdsm will send these secrets to the destination host, and on the destination host, vdsm will register the secrets with libvirt before starting the vm. 3. When hot-plugging a disk, send the secret if needed in the disk description. On the host, vdsm will register the secrets with libvirt. 4. When vdsm shutdown or starts, clear all secrets to ensure that we don't keep stale or unneeded secrets on a host 5. We never unregister secrets, since they are ephemeral anyway. 6. Alternatively, we can implement secrets reference counting so when a vm stops or disk is hot-unplugged we decrease the reference count on the secrets associated with this vm/disk, and if no other vms need the secret, we can unregister the secret from libvirt. The new approach is simpler, if we avoid the fancy secret reference counting. I believe we can get it merged in couple of weeks with help from the virt team. In an effort to improve the project workflow and ease the maintenance and improve the quality of the project releases I want to propose start working towards automated builds and releases, the main ideas are the following: * Stop building differently for release and non-release: - Building only once, testing what you build and release what you test - Don't use two different version strings, one for testing and one for release * Automate the build process, and the release process, directly getting the code from the repos (no manual build tarballs) * Adopt semantic versioning, it's a lot more meaningful than the current sc= heme and fits very well with the above points This will ease and lower the maintenance and the extra work required by maintainers, release engineers (sandro) and infra itself by making releases= as easy as hitting a button at any time.
