This tests used to fail in the past, but since we fixed it or the code it never failed. oVirt master - Fedora 28

Hi, you can now "dnf install ovirt-engine" on fedora 28 using https://resources.ovirt.org/repos/ovirt/tested/master/rpm/fc28/ ovirt-master-snapshot is still syncing and will probably be aligned in 1 hour or so. Mirrors should be aligned by tomorrow. Please note that no test has been done on the build. Host side we are currently blocked on a broken dependency on Bug 1588471 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1588471> - nothing provides python-rhsm needed by pulp-rpm-handlers-2.15.2-1.fc28.noarch And we still miss vdsm build, pending https://gerrit.ovirt.org/91944 review and merge for supporting fc28. A few notes on the engine build: - Dropped fluentd and related packages from the dependency tree: there's no commitment in supporting fluentd for metrics in 4.3 so we didn't invest time in packaging it for fedora. - Dropped limitation on novnc < 0.6. Fedora already has 0.6.1 in stable repository and we have Bug 1502652 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1502652> - [RFE] upgrade novnc which should be scoped for 4.3.0 or we should consider dropping novnc support. This should allow to start developing oVirt Engine appliance based on Fedora 28 and then OST suites. Is your engine functioning at all? I'm not sure if you're saying your entire engine doesn't work, or just host deploy doesn't work. What version of ovirt engine is this? How did you install -- fresh installation, upgrade? From source or rpm? oVirt HCI point-to-point interconnection

Good morning, I would like to kindly ask you a question about the feasibility of defining a point-to-point interconnection between three ovirt nodes. Initially with the idea of optimizing the direct communications between the nodes and especially the gluster communications, and so it would seem quite easy, then evaluating a more complex configuration, assuming to create an overlay L2 network on the three L3 point-to-point, using techniques like geneve, of which at the moment I have no mastery. If the direct routing of three nodes to interconnect the public network with the private overlay network was not easily doable, we could leave the private overlay network isolated from the outside world and connect the VM hosted engine directly to the two networks with two adapters. This layout with direct interconnection of the nodes without switches and a shared L2 overlay network between the nodes may in future be contemplated in future releases of your HCI solution? I want to share the current state of oVirt on Fedora 28, hopefully it will save time for other developers. 1. Why should I run oVirt on Fedora 28? - Fedora is the the base for future CentOS. The bugs we find *today* on Fedora 28 are the bugs that we will not have next year when we try oVirt on CentOS. - I want to contribute to projects that require python 3. For example, virt-v2v require python 3.6 in upstream. If you want to contribute you need to test it on Fedora 28. - I need to develop with latest libvirt and qemu. To fix this, open host > network > setup networks and assign ovirtmgmt to the host management nic. The host will become UP after that. Trying to update vdsm master, my update script fail with: installing... error: Failed dependencies: vdsm = 4.30.0-429.git05bfb8731.fc28 is needed by (installed) vdsm-hook-fcoe-4.30.0-429.git05bfb8731.fc28.noarch vdsm = 4.30.0-429.git05bfb8731.fc28 is needed by (installed) vdsm-hook-ethtool-options-4.30.0-429.git05bfb8731.fc28.noarch I tried to remove these hooks, since I'm not interested in any of them, but removing them try to remove 136 packages including libvirt. Why do we have these dependencies? hook should be optional. Who owns these hooks? Nir

Deprecating direct RPM downloads from Jenkins

Hi there, TL;DR: Is your build/CI/other process consuming RPMs directly from Jenkins? Could it be changed to consume from other available places? In STDCI V1 we supported obtaining of the latest CI build for a particular project in a particular branch on a particular platform directly from Jenkins, by using the "latestSuccessfulBuild" dynamic link that Jenkins generates. This was possible in STDCI V1 because we had one-to-one correlation between jenkins jobs and project/branch/platform combinations. That is no longer the case in STDCI V2 where each project gets just two fixed jobs that adjust themselves automatically to run needed functionality. We could implement some equivalent functionality in STDCI V2 by for e.g. uploading builds to some predictable locations on an artifact server, but that will take some non-trivial amount of work, so it leads us to the question if this functionality is really needed. There are a couple of alternatives locations to get recently built packages from: - The 'tested' repo which contains all the packages that passed CQ/OST - The 'snapshot' repo which contains a nightly snapshot of 'tested'. We bundled the library within ovirt-engine-backend rpm not having it packaged as standalone system library. The library is now available in Fedora Rawhide and is in testing for Fedora 28[1]. I opened Bug 1591828 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1591828> - Stop bundling nimbus-jose-jwt 4.13.1, rebase on latest 5.12. to track removal of the bundled library and use the system provided one. Like this? import vdsm.storage.sd getStorageDomains(storageType=sd.NFS_DOMAIN) Problem is vdsm.storage.sd does not seem to be part of the public API, clients shouldn't be seeing all that. I want to hopefully cover all needed changes since I last worked on this tool, so did this: Ran engine-setup, kept a list of files it added/changed Ran rename, checked which of above files still contain the old name. Gerrit is slow again

It was also very slow last week, moving between patches takes many seconds. It seems that there is some caching mechanism in gerrit, so after very slow page retrieval, the next request is fast. Hi all, I created an ansible role for setting up ovirt-engine development environment. If you are not familiar with ansible, it's a tool for getting a machine into a specific 'state'. A role is a 'type' of machine, like 'db server' or 'web server' or 'dev rig.' Roles are 'applied' to machines. So you can apply the ovirt-engine-devel role to setup a working development environment instantly. It works over ssh or locally. You can see it in action here: https://imgur.com/a/FwEkmy5? [Fedora][Engine] Hystrix going to be orphaned in Fedora

FESCo approved an updated policy for packages which fail to build from source during mass rebuilds (FTBFS). The updated policy is still at https://fedoraproject.org/ wiki/Fails_to_build_from_source. Highlights: - packages which FTBFS are subject to orphaning if there is no maintainer acknowledgement within 8 weeks - packages which FTBFS in two consecutive mass rebuilds will be retired soon after the second mass rebuild Focusing on Hystrix, it has been reported failing on 2018-03-14, more than 10 weeks ago and it's failing to build since Fedora 26, totalling 3 consecutive mass rebuild failures. This put Hystrix in a candidate position for being orphaned. The Hystrix package is used by oVirt Engine. The POM requires version 1.4.14 (released this on 6 Aug 2015) . Fedora 24 and CentOS Virt SIG has 1.4.21 (released this on 17 Nov 2015). Latest upstream version is 1.5.13. Since in oVirt 4.3 we're aiming to support Fedora 28 we need to decide on what to do with Hystrix: - drop it as dependency? - update to latest? - try to fix build failure and keep current version? Vdsm branch ovirt-4.2.4 has been created. If there are any Vdsm changes to be included in oVirt 4.2.4 they must be backported there. BTW, please be pro-active and talk to the stable maintainers (Petr, Francesco, and me) when you plan to merge something to Vdsm stabilization branches (such as later RC releases). Don't hesitate to let us know even before your patches are ready for merge so that we are aware about them in advance and can plan accordingly. Propose Milan Zamazal as virt maintainer

Hi all, Milan Zamazal has been working on the oVirt project for more than 2.5 years. Let me highlight some of his many contributions to the project: - Since January this year - 2018, he's been a maintainer for the stable branches. - He developed important features like memory hotunplug, which required tight cooperation and communication with the other layers of the stack (libvirt, qemu). - He is a mentor in the Outreachy program, which lead to creation of the oVirt Log Analyzer: https://github.com/mz-pdm/ovirt-log-analyzer - He contributed more than 290 patches to the Vdsm project in master branch alone, excluding backports and contributions to Engine - He contributed and is contributing testcases and fixes to the oVirt System Test suite, a tool which was already pivotal in ensuring the quality of the oVirt project. As reviewer, Milan is responsive and his comments are always comprehensive and well focused, with strong attitude towards getting things done and done right. Milan also demonstrated his ability to adapt to the needs of the project: - he demonstrated careful and thoughtful patch management while maintaining the stable branches - he also demonstrated he's not shy to tackle large and needed changes during the 4.1 and 4.2 cycles, when we deeply reorganized the XML processing in the virt code. For those reasons, and many more, I think he will be a good addition to the maintainers team, and I propose him as virt co-maintainer. Recent upgrade issues caused by mess in database scripts

Hi, recently [1], [2] were raised, but the main reason for those bugs was the we are no paying enough attention to consequences when doing backports. Below are two examples which we need to pay more attention to: 1. Database upgrade scripts naming and numbering - there's no problem if the same script has different name or number between y-streams (for example 4.3 and 4.2), but names and number need to match between z-streams - if we are going to do async release (for example 4.2.3.z) and we need to backport to async branch patch which includes db upgrade script, we need to make sure to align db scripts in branch from which next z-stream will be built (for example 4.2, patch [3] can be used as an example how to fix this issue) 2. Use the same name of database upgrade script when doing backports - when backporting some patches to z-stream branch please use the same db script name and change only db script number as needed, otherwise backports are quite confusing (for example [4] and [5]) Patch [3] fixes the situation, so when included into 4.2.4 build it should allow smooth upgrade from 4.2.3.z to 4.2.4, but users which already performed upgrade are in trouble. @Eli is there any way how we can force execution of db scripts, which were skipped due to the mess in names between 4.2.3.z and 4.2.4 to help users which have already broken database? @Tal/@Piotr, could you please pay even more attention when merging patches containing db scripts to z-stream async branches (normal branch, for example ovirt-engine-4.2, should be fine, but ovirt-engine-4.2.3.z requires more attention)? I agree that developer who backports the patch should handle the situation (feel free to ask infra team if unsure about consequences), but you are the last safety check we have. The process is quite simple, you just need to ask one of the existing maintainers to send a patch to the 'jenkins-whitelist' repo on gerrit.ovirt.org and one of the infra members can merge it once it has +1 from an existing maintainer.
