Hi all, I'm happy to start a weekly summary of what's going on on virt's world (VDSM edition). General topics * I've got some mixed feedback about my Vm-on-a-diet effort. I still believe that fat trimming is a worthwhile goal per se, but I'm willing to adapt the strategy responding to the comments, so we will focus on virt-specific topics. * As consequence of the above, I'm focusing on the last bits of device fixing, which involves - fixing all device to update themselves from libvirt XML after domain boot, instead using all the getUnderyling* methods - switch the devices related code to use Etree instead of minidom. This will involve changes to the domain_descriptor. I estimate this task will still trim ~600 lines out of vm.py, so it still somehow gets some size trimming done, albeit not intensive as planned. This is a complex topic, will post plan and ideas on a separate mail * Finally, some series are still worth pushing forward, see below. Patches in need of attention * topic branches - mpolednik started a much needed cleanup and fixing of fake_qemu and fake_kvm code, with the ultimate goal to move all the remaining bits into the faqemu hook, and to make it useful on ppc64. Lots of refactoring is needed to support this change, and that produced https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/q/topic:cpuinfo - we want to improve the reporting in case of migratio aborted. The ultimate goal is to let Engine (thus the User) know why a migration failed. To export this information, however, we need some cleanup before. Worth a look, but note that we are working toward a split of this big patch - https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/49636 V2V refactoring, also almost ready - https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/49570/ still in the context of migration enhancements. We want to throttle incoming migrations, to do so we want to use a sempahore which needs to be held by the creation thread until VM is created. This helper makes this possible, using an uniform interface for both this case and the common, simpler case. Automation CI for vdsm

Hi all, We want to run functional tests as part of Vdsm CI for each patch before merge. Therefore we need to declare how to automate this process without overloading our jenkins machines. The functional tests will run using lago (https://github.com/ovirt/lago) - It will initiate multiply vms, install vdsm and manipulate it by nosetests or other procedures such as upgrade, removal and so on. Currently standard CI provides check-patch and check-merged scripts ( http://ovirt-infra-docs.readthedocs.org/en/latest/CI/Build_and_test_standar…) the problem with check-merged is that it will run after merge which doesn't help if something fails. We want to allow developers to trigger the script once reviews and verification are ready (last step before merge). To do so we agreed to add Continues Integration flag for each vdsm patch. Once this flag will be signed with +1 it will trigger Jenkins CI to run the check-merged script (adding new button to gerrit is not an option - you can image that flag as a trigger button), on success Jenkins CI flag will turn to +2. on fail we'll get -1 and once new patchset is ready the developer will remove the +1 and add it back to the Continues Integration flag to re-trigger the job. Subject: Looking for advice regarding user portal development.

Evening all, I'm a student from the UK, currently studying Bsc (Hons) Computer Forensics & Security, looking for a bit of advice regarding front-end development for the oVirt user portal. For my final year project I’m going to be extending the current user portal to produce a user interface that fits the needs of Computer Security education. I want to create an interface that supports the workflow of a tutor configuring one to many virtual machines / networks for a scenario based lab session. The project will involve developing two different interfaces depending on whether a student or tutor is logged in. The project is going to be based on a paper that was presented in the UK at the first Cybersecurity Education and Training conference as part of the Vibrant Workshop, and is available in full here: http://z.cliffe.schreuders.org/publications/VibrantWorkshop2015%20-%20An%20… The tutor portal will have an avenue for tutors to upload images and a way to group templates of virtual machines for students to clone. The student portal will have one webpage with a list of their owned VMs on the left, like the current user portal, and all lab VM templates on the right organised/grouped by lab. Students will be able to clone a VM or group of VM's from the right with a couple of clicks at most. I'm planning on forking the user-portal code and making changes here. I want a different interface to appear for the students and the tutors. Initial thoughts were to do this based on the 'Role' concept within oVirt - I plan on creating 2 new user group’s with predefined roles, Student and Tutor, and having the tutor-only functionality appear on an additional tab which only appears if the logged in user has the Tutor role. We have a powerful development server at university which is currently running oVirt 3.6 with 3 nodes. As of right now I've set up the engine development environment on Fedora 23. I'm still getting familiar with the code and build process and have not yet deployed a build to the server. It is my hope and intention that any work I produce will be of value to the greater community and will open source all work. I would really appreciate any input / advice in developing for the user portal and hope to produce something make my code changes more likely to be accepted upstream. Thanks for reading, Thomas Shaw

CPU sockets, threads, cores and NUMA

Hello developers, tl;dr version: * deprecate report_host_threads_as_cores * remove cpuSockets, use sum(numaNodes.keys()) * report threadsPerCore for ppc64le / report total number of threads for ppc64le * work on our naming issues I've been going over our capabilities reporting code in VDSM due to specific threading requirements on ppc64le platform and noticed few issues. Before trying to fix something that "works", I'm sending this mail to start a discussion regarding current and future state of the code. First thing is the terminology. What we consider cpu sockets, cores and threads are in fact NUMA cells, sum of cores present in NUMA nodes and the same for threads. I'd like to see the code moving in a direction that is correct in this sense. More important are the actual calculations. I believe we should draw an uncrossable line between cores and threads and not interfere with it at least on VDSM's side. That would mean deprecating report_host_threads_as_cores option. The actual algorithm used at present does calculate the numa cores and numa threads correctly given that there are no offline CPUs - most likely fine enough. We don't have to report the actual number of sockets though, as it is reported in numa* keys. It does fail to provide us with information that can be used in ppc64le environment, where for POWER8 we want to run the host without SMT while VMs would have multiple CPUs assigned. There are various configurations of so-called subcores in POWER8, where each CPU core can contain 1, 2 or 4 subcores. This configuration must be taken in consideration as given e.g. 160 threads overall, it is possible to run either 20 VMs in smt8 mode, 40 VMs in smt4 mode or 80 VMs in smt2 mode. We have to report either the total number of threads OR just the threadsPerCore setting, so the users know how many "CPUs" should be assigned to machines for optimal performance. As always, I welcome any opinions regarding the proposed ideas. Also note that all of the changes can be done via deprecation to be fully backwards compatible - except for the ppc part. Hi all, Recently we added a new test, breaking make check when run on a development machine as non-privileged user. https://gerrit.ovirt.org/50984 This test pass on the CI environment, because the tests are running as root. Please verify that "make check" is successful on your development environment. otherwise, you may break the tests for others using this practice. Best practice for running the tests: 1. Hi, oVirt provides a so-called "external VM" concept to control basic functionality (start, stop, migrate) of VMs running outside oVirt. What is the status of the external VM support? Automation CI for imgbased

Hey, imgbased [1] is the layer management component in Node Next, leveraging lvm. In the last days I've added unittests for this component. After Ryan ramped up the jobs, I spent some time to fix the unit tests. Previously imgbased was tested inside VMs to run the unit tests. Now I moved to a fake LVM which is modeling the real LVm behavior, to run the unit tests. This is _much_ quicker, and much easier to handle. New git repositories ovirt-engine-api-model, ovirt-engine-api-metamodel and ovirt-engine-api-explorer

Hello, As part of the changes of the engine REST API for 4.0 two now components have been introduced: - The API model. This is the specification of the API, and it is currently part of the engine repository, in the backend/manager/modules/restapi/model directory. - The API metamodel. This is a set of tools that read the model and generate different artifacts from it, like the XML schema, the the JAX-RS interfaces, etc. It is also currently part of the engine repository, in the backend/manager/modules/restapi/metamodel. In order to support multiple versions of the specification inside the same engine the API model needs to be separated to a different git repository, its releases managed independently of the engine, and the artifacts uploaded to Maven central. The metamodel also needs to be separated to a different repository, and have its own relase cycle, and the artifacts uploaded to Maven central, as they will be required by the engine and by the generators of the SDKs. Thus I'm requesting the creation of two new git repositories in gerrit.ovirt.org to hold these components: ovirt-engine-api-model ovirt-engine-api-metamodel In addition version 4.0 will also include a web application used to explore the automatically generated reference documentation. Merged UI infra patch

Hi guys, I just merged [1] which removes all occurrences of the @ProxyEvent mechanism from the code base. As part of this patch I have to fix some Java generics issues with some sub tabs. I believe I fixed them all properly but I might have missed some. As part of this fix, now it will lazy load the code associated with sub tabs instead of loading all the code at once when you select an item in the main tab grid. This should result in a more responsive UI and less memory usage. If you see any kind of strange behavior in sub tabs let me know and I will see if I can fix it. New VMStatus methods

Hi! I've just posted the patch introducing new set of VM status checking methods. https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/50590/ The methods are added to VMStatus class and delegated to VM class. The old methods are marked as deprecated and we plan to get rid of them soon. I highly recommend to use these methods everywhere and never to compare to VMStatus constants directly. There are methods to check for individual states and for meaningful sets - using them makes the code much more clear and understandable and it was the goal. The second page of the documents contains the list of the new functions and the statuses they will check. On the first page I've collected all the places I'm planning to change - class name, method name and line number. "New method" column is the new check that will be put in this place. Changing to new functions will often add/remove a state or two, that's why I'll be VERY pleased to see your comments. I've sorted the classes by topic, so it will be easy to look on those you're familiar with. Ask yourself questions: 1. If Up state is required, what about PoweringUp, PoweringDown, RebootInProgress? 2. If Up state is required, what about WaitingForLaunch? Paused? 3. What about migration? 4. What about hibernation? 5. QCOW2 support for base images vs GlusterFS support

Hi, 4:23 AM and this paradox is struggling my head... Can someone please confirm if oVirt supports QCOW2 *base* images? AFAIK, oVirt only supports QCOW2 for *snapshots* not base images. Base images must always be in RAW format and there is no way to create QCOW2 disks in Engine [1]. On the other hand, working with RAW images on a GlusterFS storage is inefficient because of [2]. in fact, sparse-files performance is unacceptable [3]. Please confirm, comment or ignore. AppErrors cleanup

Hi all, A recent bug [1] reported as part of the translation effort alerted me to the fact that we have a lot (and I mean a LOT - over 100 per file) of deprecated, unused keys in the various AppErrors files that serve no purpose and just take up space and waste translators time when they examine them. To make a long story short - I've just merged a patch to remove all these useless messages, and enforce via unit tests that EVERY key there should have a corresponding constant in the EngineMessage or EngineError enums. Proposal: Hystrix for realtime command monitoring

Hi All, I am contributing to the engine for three months now. While I dug into the code I started to wonder how to visualize what the engine is actually doing. To get better insights I added hystrix[1] to the engine. Hystrix is a circuit breaker library which was developed by Netflix and has one pretty interesting feature: Real time metrics for commands. In combination with hystrix-dashboard[2] it allows very interesting insights. You can easily get an overview of commands involved in operations, their performance and complexity. Look at [2] and the attachments in [5] and [6] for screenshots to get an Impression. I want to propose to integrate hystrix permanently because from my perspective the results were really useful and I also had some good experiences with hystrix in past projects. A first implementation can be found on gerrit[3]. # Where is it immediately useful? During development and QA. An example: I tested the hystrix integration on /api/vms and /api/hosts rest endpoints and immediately saw that the number of command exectuions grew lineary whit the number of vms and hosts. The bug reports [5] and [6] are the result. # How to monitor the engine? It is as easy as starting a hystrix-dashboard [2] with $ git clone https://github.com/Netflix/Hystrix.git $ cd Hystrix/hystrix-dashboard $ ../gradlew jettyRun and point the dashboard to https://<customer.engine.ip>/ovirt-engine/hystrix.stream. # Other possible benefits? * Live metrics at customer site for admins, consultants and support. * Historical metrics for analysis in addition to the log files. The metrics information is directly usable in graphite [7]. Therefore it would be possible to collect the json stream for a certain time period and analyze them later like in [4]. To do that someone just has to run curl --user admin@internal:engine http://localhost:8080/ovirt-engine/api/hystrix.stream > hystrix.stream for as long as necessary. The results can be analyzed later. # Possible architectural benefits? In addition to the live metrics we might also have use for the real hystrix features: * Circuit Breaker * Bulk execution of commands * De-dublication of commands (Caching) * Synchronous and asynchronous execution support * ... Our commands do already have a lot of features, so I don't think that there are some quick wins, but maybe there are interesting opportunities for infra. # Overhead? In [5] the netflix employees describe their results regarding the overhead of wrapping every command into a new instance of a hystrix command. They ran their tests on a standard 4-core Amazon EC2 server with a load of 60 request per second. When using threadpools they measured a mean overhead of less than one millisecond (so negligible). At the 90th percentile they measured an overhead of 3 ms. At the 99th percentile of about 9 ms. When configuring the hystrix commands to use semaphores instead of threadpools they are even faster. # How to integrate? A working implementation can be found on gerrit[3]. These patch sets wrap a hystrix command around every VdcAction, every VdcQuery and every VDSCommand. This just required four small modifications in the code base. # Security? In the provided patches the hystrix-metrics-servlet is accessible at /ovirt-engine/api/hystrix.stream. It is protected by basic auth but accessible for everyone who can authenticate. We should probably restrict it to admins. # Todo? 1) We do report failed actions with return values. Hystrix expects failing commands to throw an exception. So on the dashboard almost every command looks like a success. To overcome this, it would be pretty easy to throw an exception inside the command and catch it immediately after it leaves the hystrix wrapper. 2) Finetuning Do we want semaphores or a thread pool. Debian support for vdsm and subpackages

We currently manage debian packaging files under https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/q/project:releng-tools instead of in the project itself. imo it makes it harder, as developer won't update the debian folder while changing spec parts , which makes much more observation work for Simone.. But if we keep to manage debian that way we should remove the debian folder from cpopen, vdsm, pthreading to avoid duplication. Simone can you explain more how you manage to flow code changes and update the debian support currently? should I indeed drop the current debian code that we have in vdsm? -- *Yaniv Bronhaim.*

FYI, As part of moving all jobs to the standard ci [1], I'd like to propose to move the following into 'check-patch' and 'check-merged' : 1. unit tests 2. find-bugs Currently these run as separate jobs and not even yamelized. My only concern is populating junit & findbugs results into jenkins UI to enable reviewing the errors and continue to enforce logic from the original jobs, like '0' high/med/low bugs on find-bugs. In the last month, the number of builds per day has been multiplied by 1750= %, that is, from ~500 build/day tops to more than 8750 build/day The percentage of failures has gone down too (around 5% in the last week). = That does not mean that the false negatives is going down too, but for sure it m= eans that it's not raising a lot if raising at all. For the last 7 days (including weekend) we ran 25858 builds, from which only 928 were failures (combined real and false negatives, no easy way to know y= et) The daily average build time is at around 10min, that does not include the = time waiting in the queue though. For the queues, we had a big peak of >750 queued jobs on tuesday (lasting u= ntil thursday), with 4 smaller peaks of 300-200 jobs on last week's monday,tuesd= ay and wednesday and on this week's monday. oVirt engine 4.0 will require WildFly 10 / EAP 7

Hi, we are going to merge patches which drops EAP 6 support [1] and requires WildFly 10 / EAP 7 [2] for oVirt engine master on Monday December 14th at 10:00 CET. This is a huge step as we will finally be able to use all new features provided by WildFly 10 (J2EE 7, Java 8, RESTEasy 3, ActiveMQ Artemis, Hibernate 5, ...). Upgrade of code base to use those new features will be done incrementally, for example this patch [3] cleans up our CDI related code and upgrades to CDI 1.2. So on Monday please upgrade WildFly packages on your development machines to: ovirt-engine-wildfly-10.0.0 ovirt-engine-wildfly-overlay-10.0.0 and rebase your patches on top of latest master. To ease backporting of patches to oVirt 3.6 we have already merged patches which made oVirt 3.6 compatible with WildFly 10, but please bear in mind that oVirt 3.6 have to be compatible with EAP 6 and there are no plans to upgrade it to WildFly 10! Hi, 'm unable to add host to engine. I have fresh engine build, cleaned host, dropped and recreated DB. I'm adding host using rest¹. Command InitVdsOnUpCommand is called during operation, having getStoragePoolId() equal to 00000001-0001-0001-0001-0000000000c1. However, there's no storage domain in system — it's empty installation, and I'm only creating host yet (so I cannot have any storage domain). Because of that, following code: StorageDomain masterDomain = getStorageDomainDao().getStorageDomains(storagePoolId, StorageDomainType.Master).get(0); in method: org.ovirt.engine.core.bll.InitVdsOnUpCommand#runConnectHostToPoolEvent produces NPE, which is probably cause of host marked as nonoperational. ——— If I'm doing something wrong, plese advice. Hi Allon! patch in $subject modifies test method name from: testGetLocaleFromStringString_withDefault to: testGetLocaleFromStringStringWithDefault I've always thought that Java test method names should be as much readable as possible, because in Java tests, the method name is used to describe the particular test case. (Unfortunately, Java test frameworks don't do a good job in this area.. please correct me if I'm wrong.) So with JS/Jasmine we can do this: describe('LocaleUtils', function () { it('should extract locale from given String', function () { // actual test code }); }); but in Java we usually do this: // <methodName>_<extraInfoForSpecificTestCase> void testGetLocaleFromStringString_withDefault which is already far from readable, and this: testGetLocaleFromStringStringWithDefault makes it even worse.. Even though it complies with Java method naming convention, it totally obfuscates what is that particular test case about, which means people who want to maintain such tests need to spend time studying what the test is actually doing.. Hi all, as many already know, we have a problem in the vdsm/virt/* area with the size of vm.py. I don't think we can make it in one go. We should tackle this monster task in stages. We have roughly five weeks left until the end of the year. Sounds like a good timespan for the first stage, and I'm aiming for go down under the 4000 line mark. So we have roughly 1200 lines to eliminate somehow. This is the initial plan I'm thinking off, in expected increasing difficulty level, from easies to hardest: 1. LiveMergeCleanupThread: Chance to break things: minimal - roughly 120 lines (10% of the goal) - can be moved verbatim (cut/paste) elsewhere, like vdsm/virt/livemerge.py, fixing only import paths. 2. the findDrive* family of functions: Chance to break things: minimal/very low - roughly 50 lines (~4% of the goal) - can be moved with minimal changes elsewhere, like vdsm/virt/storage/????.py, 3. the getConf* faimily of functions: Chance to break things: medium-to-high in the 3.x branch, low on 4.x because we drop backward compat. - roughly 110 lines (~9% of the goal) - just drop them for 4.0! - alternatively, need to figure out a proper place, maybe a new module? 4. the Devices/VM setup bits All scatthered through vm.py (e.g. _buildDomainXML, DeviceMapping table) Chance to break things: medium-to-low, depends on individual patches - all summed up, roughly 200 lines (~18% of the goal) - need serious cleanup - no definite plan - mostly is cut/paste or transform Vm methods into functions 5. the getUnderlying* familiy of functions: Chance to break things: low (maybe medium on some cases, to lean on the safe side) - roughly 550 lines (~46% of the goal) - easy to test (just run vms!) - can be moved in the devices/ subpackage with some changes. - require further work in the area to properly integrate this code in the device objects - more work is planned in this area, including move from minidom to ElementTree So far, I've gathered ~1030 lines, so I'm short of 170 lines to reach the goal, but I'm confident I can find something more. The plan now is to start from the easy parts *and* in background with #4, which requires way more work than everything else. Thoughts, objections and suggestions all welcome, especially from storage people, because first items in my list affects them. [VDSM] Coverage - checking coverage with vdsm-coverage

Hi all, I posted https://gerrit.ovirt.org/49807, adding vdsm-coverage package, making it easy to get coverage report for functional or system tests. This can also be used to understand which code is touched when performing some flow manually. Once this patch is merged, you can create coverage report like this: 1. Install vdsm-coverage 2. Enable coverage in vdsm.conf: [devel] coverage_enable = true 3. Restart vdsm 4. Run tests or interact with engine 5. Stop vdsm The report is created in /var/run/vdsm/vdsm.coverage To create html report: coverage html --rcfile /etc/vdsm/coverage.conf The view the report, start a web server: cd htmlcov python -m SimpleHTTPServer The report is available now in your favorite browser: http://myhost.example.com:8000/ The manual steps described above can probably be automated, having a web server running and generating coverage report on demand. (hint: patches are welcome) Notes: - On RHEL 7.2, python-coverage is old (3.6). [Russian oVirt localization] Gettext .pos to Java .properties convert, need help

Hello, I'm currently working on Russian translation for oVirt. I'm dealing with Java program localization for the first time, so I need some help. Here's the problem: I got a .po files translated locally in Lokalize. In order to test the translations in the oVirt interface, I have to convert the .pos back to .properties. The .po files processed by Lokalize have different format then the .pots generated by prop2po (from Translate Toolkit). Example of Localize .po and the corresponding .pot created with prop2po can be found here: http://pastebin.com/62V3SyWV I tried to merge the .pos using msgmerge but being it a Gettext tool, it does it all wrong. So here's my question: which is the right way to merge the gettext .po with prop2po .pot and get proper Russian .po ready to be cleanly converted back into .properties? I have 5200 messages ready to be tested in the oVirt interface by now, but I got stuck here :) PS: To make it little more clear: I know about Zanata, I downloaded the .pos from there primarily but I prefer to work locally in Lokalize to keep my work away from ignorant (sad but true) community translators. Hi team, Back in the day, somewhere between the discovery of fire and the wheel, Java 5 introduced generics. This was a great step forwards, but also created some of the most horrible boiler-plated code you could imagine: Map<Guid, List<Preson<Guid>> = new HashMap<Guid, List<Preson<Guid>>(); Java 7 improved the situation by adding generic type inference, a.k.a the diamond operator [1]: Map<Guid, List<Preson<Guid>> = new HashMap<>(); This style is defacto the standard of the engine, with new patches using it and patches to fix old code that doesn't use it being accepted pretty quickly. Since we defacto agreed on this standard, I'd like to put my money where my mouth is, and make it a declarative standard. I have a series of patches [2] that fix **all** the occurrences of non-diamond declarations [3][4][5] (well, except for anonymous implementations like we have in the DAOs) and adds a checkstyle validation [6] to prevent further declarations like this from entering the project in the future. Engine maintainers, please review and assist in getting this series merged. The rebase will be hellacious as it is, and I'd like to minimize the effort as much as possible. Hi all, Thanks to Edward, we have now coverage reports in jenkins. Note that coverage of 25% can mean *no* code was run by the tests. The only code running was the functions and class definitions. I don't see a way to configure nosetests or coverage to generate relative paths. May need hacking of the generated html/json in htmlcov. - Add "make coverage" target for running coverage locally - An easy way to enable coverage for the functional tests or for running a single test module. Can be done using nosetests --cover* options. Should be documented in tests/README, and maybe automated using a script or Makefile. Hello, We have merged SSO patchset into master. These kind of deep infra changes are non trivial, we hope we reduced most of the side effects within the 171 revisions and testing. Thanks for Ravi Nori for his great effort! The SSO is based on OAuth2 specification, full description is available[1], it is a stable supported interface of engine. In a nut shell, the major change is that login dialog is now handled by a separate non gwt webapp, this webapp provides authentication and authorization services to other webapps. The immediate bonus is: no need to re-authenticate to user portal and/or admin portal, maybe soon we integrate reports. Performance bonus: if using spnego (kerberos) there is no performance penalty (double request). This morning my 3.6.1 RC1 engine refuses to start.
