Update on oVirt 3.1 Release Date

Promoting oVirt: Workshops & More

Hello everyone, I wanted to share some updates on upcoming oVirt workshops and overall promotion of oVirt with the Board. We're already at 50 workshop registrations for LinuxCon North America [0], and that's with ~25% of overall conference registrations completed. I can see us doubling that number in the coming weeks with some additional promotion efforts from all of us. I'd like to ask for help from all of the Board member companies to promote the workshops and the 3.1 release. The Open Virtualization Alliance (OVA) will be promoting both upcoming workshops and oVirt 3.1 via their website, mailing list and social media channels. Our colleagues at IBM have also graciously agreed to promote the 3.1 release via their social media channels and newsletter. If any board member companies would like boilerplate text that can be adapted by their PR teams, I'll be happy to send it along. Obviously, we'll need to hold on promoting the 3.1 release based on the results of today's go/no go meeting, but I'd love for folks to being promoting the workshops now. Last but not least, we'd like to add additional seats to the workshops at LinuxCon North America and for KVM Forum + oVirt at LinuxCon Europe. We'd like to raise $5,500 for LCNA, which would allow us to double the number of free registrants to 100. For KVM Forum + oVirt at LinuxCon Europe, we're looking to raise $38,500 to allow for free registration for 150 attendees at the event. Traditionally, KVM Forum has not been cost free for attendees, so our sponsorship will definitely generate kudos for the sponsors. Workshops include free lunch for the attendees and a $200 discount on their LinuxCon conference registration for both North America and Europe. For those board companies interested in sponsoring upcoming workshops, let me know and I can work with you to make arrangements with the Linux Foundation. Other workshop sponsors will be listed on the appropriate Linux Foundation event site(s) for each workshop and we can work with the LF to promote additional sponsors in their attendee email blasts leading up the conferences. Hello, I am Leo Reiter, CTO of Virtual Bridges, Inc. Since 2008 we have been leveraging KVM (and QEMU before that) to deliver best of breed VDI solutions to compete with the likes of VMware View and Citrix XenDesktop. We have made available various enhancements to KVM that we are working on getting upstreamed. I would like to understand the process of getting onto the board. I bring 11 years of experience in virtualization, specifically VDI, and over 4 years of experience with KVM specifically. This includes large scale deployments at various private sector and public sector customers. My role as CTO has been a combination of Chief Architect, Designer, Developer, and Advocate. I will even be delivering a speech at LinuxCon North America 2012 on "Making Linux VDI a Reality". I am also happy to instruct my developers to get experienced with the ovirt platform and even consider becoming a maintainer. We had said we would start the discussion around project nominations. Let me frame the discussion and then we can all jump in. Firstly, there are two types of nominations - Contributor - Board Let's make sure we have the criteria agreed and then we can do the nomination based on the criteria. For Contributor nominations I believe the criteria should be along these lines - Candidate should have contributed over a period and know to the community via lists/IRC/patches etc, and align with the project - Contributions should be considered substantive enough. (Contributions can be from patches, to doc, to helping out, doing infra etc) Notes: - As the project is newer, we can be more lax on the duration and size of contribution, and as the project matures we can raise the bar. This is common practice with many projects I've worked with or started. For Board nominations I believe the criteria should be along these lines - Individual should have become known in the project and respected by more than one sub-project - Individual should have contributed to the well being on the project beyond code/doc contributions. These 'beyond' contributions can be around help evangelise the project, running meet-ups, organizing events, soliciting additional strategic board members, looking after the well being of the project etc. - Individual should have contributed over a period of time. regards, Carl.

oVirt Workshop at LinuxCon North America

Hello everyone, Following up from this week's IRC meeting, we've asked the Linux Foundation to replicate the agenda from LinuxCon Japan on the LC North America site. That's in process, but they'd like us to get the names and bios of our confirmed speakers to them no later than next Wednesday, 27 June 2012. I'll leave it to everyone to wrangle about who would like to speak and cover particular sessions. My goal with this workshop is to have a more diverse speaker line up, so please do volunteer if you're attending LinuxCon North America and would be willing to lead a session(s).
